Phenomenology of NNLO jet production at the LHC and its impact on parton distributions

We present a systematic investigation of jet production at hadron colliders from a phenomenological point of view, with the dual aim of providing a validation of theoretical calculations and guidance to future determinations of parton distributions (PDFs). We account for all available inclusive jet and dijet production measurements from ATLAS and CMS at 7 and 8 TeV by including them in a global PDF determination, and comparing to theoretical predictions at NNLO QCD supplemented by electroweak (EW) corrections. We assess the compatibility of the PDFs, specifically the gluon, obtained before and after inclusion of the jet data. We compare the single-inclusive jet and dijet observables in terms of perturbative behaviour upon inclusion of QCD and EW corrections, impact on the PDFs, and global fit quality. In the single-inclusive case, we also investigate the role played by different scale choices and the stability of the results upon changes in modelling of the correlated experimental systematics.

Triple Differential Dijet Cross Section at the LHC

The measurement of the triple-differential dijet production cross section as a function of the average transverse momentum $p_{T,\textrm{avg}}$, half the rapidity separation $y^{*}$, and the boost $y_{b}$ of the two leading jets in the event enables a kinematical scan of the underlying parton momentum distributions. We compute for the first time the second-order perturbative QCD corrections to this triple-differential dijet cross section, at leading color in all partonic channels, thereby enabling precision studies with LHC dijet data. A detailed comparison with experimental CMS 8 TeV data is performed, demonstrating how the shape of this differential cross section probes the parton densities in different kinematical ranges.

Jet cross sections at the LHC and the quest for higher precision

We perform a phenomenological study of $Z$ plus jet, Higgs plus jet and di-jet production at the Large Hadron Collider. We investigate in particular the dependence of the leading jet cross section on the jet radius as a function of the jet transverse momentum. Theoretical predictions are obtained using perturbative QCD calculations at the next-to and next-to-next-to-leading order, using a range of renormalization and factorization scales. The fixed order predictions are compared to results obtained from matching next-to-leading order calculations to parton showers. A study of the scale dependence as a function of the jet radius is used to provide a better estimate of the scale uncertainty for small jet sizes. The non-perturbative corrections as a function of jet radius are estimated from different generators.

Infrared sensitivity of single jet inclusive production at hadron colliders

Jet production at hadron colliders is a benchmark process to probe the dynamics of the strong interaction and the structure of the colliding hadrons. One of the most basic jet production observables is the single jet inclusive cross section, which is obtained by summing all jets that are observed in an event. Our recent computation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD contributions to single jet inclusive observables uncovered large corrections in certain kinematical regions, which also resulted in a sizeable ambiguity on the appropriate choice of renormalization and factorization scales. We now perform a detailed investigation of the infrared sensitivity of the different ingredients to the single jet inclusive cross section. We show that the contribution from the second jet, ordered in transverse momentum $p_{T}$, in the event is particularly sensitive to higher order effects due to implicit restrictions on its kinematics. By investigating the second-jet transverse momentum distribution, we identify large-scale cancellations between different kinematical event configurations, which are aggravated by certain types of scale choice. Taking perturbative convergence and stability as selection criteria enables us to single out the total partonic transverse energy $\hat{H}_{T}$ and twice the individual jet transverse momentum $2\,p_{T}$ (with which $\hat{H}_{T}$ coincides in Born kinematics) as the most appropriate scales in the perturbative description of single jet inclusive production.

Jet cross sections at the LHC with NNLOJET

We review the status of NNLO calculations for jet cross sections at the LHC. In particular, we describe how perturbative stability and convergence can be used as criteria to select the most appropriate scales in the theoretical description of di-jet and single jet inclusive production.

NNLO predictions for Z-boson pair production at the LHC

We present a calculation of the NNLO QCD corrections to Z-boson pair production at hadron colliders, based on the N-jettiness method for the real radiation parts. We discuss the size and shape of the perturbative corrections along with their associated scale uncertainties and compare our results to recent LHC data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV.

Jet cross sections and transverse momentum distributions with NNLOJET

This talk discusses recent results for next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to jet cross sections and transverse momentum distributions. The results are obtained in the NNLOJET code framework, which provides an implementation of the antenna subtraction method for the handling of infrared singular contributions at NNLO. We briefly describe the NNLOJET implementation, with particular emphasis on the construction of the real radiation phase space, which is tailored to ensure stability in all infrared sensitive regions.

Precise predictions for dijet production at the LHC

We present the calculation of dijet production, doubly-differential in dijet mass, $m_{jj}$ and rapidity difference, $|y^{*}|$, at leading colour in all partonic channels at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. We consider the long-standing problems associated with scale choice for dijet production at next-to-leading order (NLO) and investigate the impact of including the NNLO contribution. We find that the NNLO theory provides reliable predictions, even when using scale choices which display pathological behaviour at NLO. We choose the dijet invariant mass as the theoretical scale on the grounds of perturbative convergence and residual scale variation and compare the predictions to the ATLAS 7 TeV 4.5 fb$^{-1}$ data.

Differential single jet inclusive production at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

In this talk we present the recent calculation in all partonic channels of the fully differential single jet inclusive cross section at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order in QCD. We discuss the size and shape of the perturbative corrections as a function of the functional form of the renormalisation and factorisation scales and compare the predictions at NLO and NNLO to the available ATLAS 7 TeV data. We find significant effects at low-$p_T$ due to changes in the functional form of the scale choice whereas at high-$p_T$ the two most common scale choices in the literature give identical results and the perturbative corrections lead to a substantial reduction in the scale dependence of the theoretical prediction at NNLO.

NNLO QCD predictions for single jet inclusive production at the LHC

We report the first calculation of fully differential jet production in all partonic channels at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD and compare to the available ATLAS 7 TeV data. We discuss the size and shape of the perturbative corrections along with their associated scale variation across a wide range in jet transverse momentum, $p_{T}$, and rapidity, $y$. We find significant effects, especially at low $p_{T}$, and discuss the possible implications for Parton Distribution Function fits.

Single jet inclusive production for the individual jet $p_{T}$ scale choice at the LHC

We study the single jet inclusive cross section up to next-to-next-to leading order in perturbative QCD, implemented in the parton-level event generator NNLOJET . Our results are fully differential in the jet transverse momentum and rapidity and we apply fiducial cuts for comparison with the available ATLAS 7 TeV 4.5 fb$^{-1}$ data for jet radius $R=0.4$. For the theoretical calculation we employ the antenna subtraction method to reliably cancel all infrared divergences present at intermediate stages of the calculation. We present all results using the individual jet transverse momentum $μ_{R}=μ_{F}\sim p_{T}$ as the renormalization and factorization scale for each jet's contribution to the single jet inclusive cross section. Finally, we consider the differences between our predictions using this scale choice to those for the leading jet transverse momentum scale choice, $μ_{R}=μ_{F}\sim p_{T_{1}}$, used in [14], with reference to the ATLAS data.

Transverse-momentum resummation for Higgs boson pair production at the LHC with top-quark mass effects

We consider Higgs boson pair production via gluon fusion in hadronic collisions. We report the calculation of the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) distribution of the Higgs boson pair with top-quark mass ($M_t$) effects fully taken into account. At small values of $q_T$ we resum the logarithmically-enhanced perturbative QCD contributions up to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. At intermediate and large values of $q_T$ we consistently combine resummation with the ${\cal O}(α_S^3)$ fixed-order results. After integration over $q_T$, we recover the next-to-leading order (NLO) result for the inclusive cross section with full dependence on $M_t$. We present illustrative numerical results at LHC energies, together with an estimate of the corresponding perturbative uncertainties, and we study the impact of the top-quark mass effects.

Precise QCD predictions for jet production at the LHC

Theoretical predictions used in experimental analysis of LHC data have an inherent theoretical uncertainty associated to the relevant order in the perturbative expansion that the observable is computed. In this talk we briefly introduce and motivate the topic of QCD radiative corrections stressing the impact of including higher-order QCD effects in the theory predictions and in particular we consider two-loop QCD corrections. We present numerical results at NNLO for gluonic jet production where jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_T$ jet algorithm from gluon-gluon and quark-antiquark scattering and discuss the inclusion of leading-$N_F$ quark contributions in the final-state.

Perturbative QCD description of jet data from LHC Run-I and Tevatron Run-II

We present a systematic comparison of jet predictions at the LHC and the Tevatron, with accuracy up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The exact computation at NNLO is completed for the gluons-only channel, so we compare the exact predictions for this channel with an approximate prediction based on threshold resummation, in order to determine the regions where this approximation is reliable at NNLO. The kinematic regions used in this study are identical to the experimental setup used by recently published jet data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC, and CDF and D0 experiments at the Tevatron. We study the effect of choosing different renormalisation and factorisation scales for the NNLO exact prediction and as an exercise assess their impact on a PDF fit including these corrections. Finally we provide numerical values of the NNLO k-factors relevant for the LHC and Tevatron experiments.

Second order QCD corrections to gluonic jet production at hadron colliders

We report on the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the production of two gluonic jets at hadron colliders. In previous work, we discussed gluonic dijet production in the gluon-gluon channel. Here, for the first time, we update our numerical results to include the leading colour contribution to the production of two gluonic jets via quark-antiquark scattering.

NNLO QCD corrections to dijet production at hadron colliders

In this talk we present the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to dijet production and related observables at hadron colliders in the purely gluonic channel. Results for this channel are obtained keeping all orders of $N_C$ in the colour expansion. We show that the NNLO correction significantly reduces the scale uncertainty compared to next-to-leading order (NLO). We present the NNLO double-differential single jet inclusive cross section where jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_T$ jet algorithm and show the dependence on the jet resolution parameter $R$.
