Birational complexity and conic fibrations

Let $(X,B)$ be a log Calabi-Yau pair of dimension $n$, index one, and birational complexity $c$. We show that $(X,B)$ has a crepant birational model that admits a tower of Mori fiber spaces of which at least $n-c$ are conic fibrations. Motivated by the proof of the previous statement, we introduce new measures of the complexity of a log Calabi-Yau pair; the alteration complexity and the conic complexity. We characterize when these invariants are zero. Finally, we give applications of the tools of the main theorem to birational superrigidity, Fano hypersurfaces, dual complexes, Weil indices of Fano varieties, and klt singularities.

Cluster type varieties

Cluster type varieties are compactifications of algebraic tori on which the volume form has no zeros. These form a natural class of varieties that generalizes both toric varieties and cluster varieties. The aim of this article is to introduce the reader to the concept of cluster type varieties and explain some recent results towards the understanding of these varieties. At the same time, we will pose some problems for further research.

Degenerations of cluster type varieties

We study degenerations of cluster type varieties and pairs. Our first theorem proves that degenerations of toric pairs are finite quotients of toric pairs. In a similar vein, under some mild conditions, we prove that degenerations of cluster type pairs are finite quotients of cluster type pairs. Then, we focus on degenerations of cluster type surfaces. We give some general criteria for the existence of $1$-complements on degenerations of toric surfaces. We prove that for almost all $(a,b,c)\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}^3$ the weighted projective plane $\mathbb{P}(a,b,c)$ has no non-trivial degenerations. In particular, for a Markov triple $(a,b,c)\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 2}^3$, we prove that $\mathbb{P}(a^2,b^2,c^2)$ admits no non-trivial degenerations. Finally, we give a complete classification of the degenerations of $\mathbb{P}(1,1,n)$ for $n\geq 3$.

Hyperbolicity of adjoint linear series on varieties with positive tangent bundle

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety of dimension $n\geq 3$, and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. In this article, we study the algebraic hyperbolicity of a very general section of the adjoint linear series $|K_X+mL|$ when the tangent bundle $T_X$ of $X$ has suitable positivity properties. As a consequence, we show that the linear system $|K_X+mL|$ is hyperbolic (or pseudo-hyperbolic) for $m\geq 3n+1$, for various classes of polarized pairs $(X,L)$, thus providing new evidence of a conjecture that was proposed by the second and fourth authors. Moreover, when $X$ is abelian, we show that the linear system $|mL|$ is hyperbolic for $m\geq n$, and the same holds when $m\geq n-1$, if $|L|$ has no base divisors. It turns out that these bounds for abelian varieties are sharp. We also prove analogous statements for Kummer varieties and certain classes of hyperelliptic varieties.

Fano compactifications of mutation algebras

In this article, we introduce the notion of mutation semigroup algebras. This concept simultaneously generalizes cluster algebras and semigroup algebras. We show that, under some mild conditions on the singularities, the spectrum $U={\rm Spec}(R)$ of a mutation semigroup algebra $R$ admits a log Fano compactification $U\hookrightarrow X$. The compactification $X$ can be chosen to be a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial log Fano variety whenever $U$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial. Furthermore, we prove that a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial klt Fano variety $X$ is of cluster type if and only if its Cox ring ${\rm Cox}(X)$ is a ${\rm Cl}(X)$-graded mutation semigroup algebra. In order to enlighten the previous theorems, we provide several explicit examples motivated by birational geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics.

Characterization of products of projective spaces via nef complexity

We define the nef complexity of a projective variety $X$. This invariant compares $\dim X+ρ(X)$ with the sum of the coefficients of nef partitions of $-K_X$. We prove that the nef complexity is non-negative and it is zero precisely for products of projective spaces. We classify smooth Fano threefolds with nef complexity at most one. In a similar vein, we prove Mukai's conjecture for smooth Fano varieties for which every extremal contraction is of fiber type and study smooth images of products of projective spaces. Along the way, we answer positively a question of J. Starr regarding the nef cone of smooth Fano varieties.

Toricity in families of Fano varieties

Rationality is not a constructible property in families. In this article, we consider stronger notions of rationality and study their behavior in families of Fano varieties. We first show that being toric is a constructible property in families of Fano varieties. The second main result of this article concerns an intermediate notion that lies between toric and rational varieties, namely cluster type varieties. A cluster type $\mathbb Q$-factorial Fano variety contains an open dense algebraic torus, but the variety does not need to be endowed with a torus action. We prove that, in families of $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal Fano varieties, being of cluster type is a constructible condition. As a consequence, we show that there are finitely many smooth families parametrizing $n$-dimensional smooth cluster type Fano varieties.

Calabi-Yau pairs of complexity two

A Calabi-Yau pair of index one and complexity zero is toric. Furthermore, a Calabi-Yau pair of index one and complexity one is of cluster type. In this article, we study Calabi-Yau pairs of index one and complexity two. We develop machinery to decide whether a Calabi-Yau of complexity two is of cluster type. This approach reduces the problem to studying del Pezzo fibrations over toric varieties. We apply this to the setting of Gorenstein del Pezzo surfaces of Picard rank one. We prove that such a surface $X$ is cluster type if and only if $X$ has only $A$-type singularities and either $\mathrm{vol}(X)>1$ or $|X^{\rm sing}|\leq 3$.

Polarized endomorphisms of log Calabi-Yau pairs

Let $(X,Δ)$ be a dlt log Calabi-Yau pair admitting a polarized endomorphism. We show that $(X,Δ)$ is a finite quotient of a toric log Calabi-Yau fibration over an abelian variety. We provide an example which shows that the previous statement does not hold if we drop the dlt condition of $(X,Δ)$ even if $X$ is a smooth variety. Given a klt type variety $X$ and a log Calabi-Yau pair $(X,Δ)$ admitting a polarized endomorphism, we show that a suitable birational modification of $(X,Δ)$ is a finite quotient of a toric log Calabi-Yau fibration over an abelian variety.

Bott-Chern complexity of Kähler pairs

We introduce the Bott-Chern complexity of a compact Kähler pair $(X,B)$. This invariant compares $\dim(X)$, $\dim H^{1,1}_{\rm BC}(X)$ and the sum of the coefficients of $B$. When $(X,B)$ is Calabi-Yau, we show that its Bott-Chern complexity is non-negative. We prove that the Bott-Chern complexity of a Calabi-Yau compact Kähler pair $(X,B)$ is at least three whenever $X$ is not projective. Furthermore, we show this value is optimal and is achieved by certain singular non-projective K3 surfaces.

A hyperbolicity conjecture for adjoint bundles

Let $X$ be a $n$-dimensional smooth projective variety and $L$ be an ample Cartier divisor on $X$. We conjecture that a very general element of the linear system $|K_X+(3n+1)L|$ is a hyperbolic algebraic variety. This conjecture holds for some classical varieties: surfaces, products of projective spaces, and Grassmannians. In this article, we investigate the conjecture for $X$ a toric variety. We confirm the conjecture in the case of smooth projective toric varieties. When $X$ is a Gorenstein toric variety, we show that $|K_X+(3n+1)L|$ is pseudo hyperbolic. For a Gorenstein toric threefold $X$, we show that $|K_X+9L|$ is hyperbolic.

Fundamental groups of log Calabi-Yau surfaces

In this article, we study the orbifold fundamental group $π_1^{\rm orb}(X,Δ)$ of a Calabi--Yau pair $(X,Δ)$ with log canonical singularities. We conjecture that the orbifold fundamental group $π_1^{\rm orb}(X,Δ)$ of a $n$-dimensional log Calabi--Yau pair admits a normal solvable subgroup of rank at most $2n$ and index at most $c(n)$. We prove this conjecture in the case that $n=2$. More precisely, for a log Calabi--Yau surface pair $(X,Δ)$ we show that $π_1^{\rm orb}(X,Δ)$ is the extension of a nilpotent group of length at most $2$ and rank at most $4$ by a finite group of order at most $7200$. We also show that the bounds on the nilpotency length, rank, and order of the finite group quotient in this result are sharp. Finally, we provide some necessary criteria for a log Calabi--Yau surface $(X,Δ)$ to have an infinite, or a non virtually abelian orbifold fundamental group.

Algebraic tori in the complement of quartic surfaces

Let $B\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ be an slc quartic surface. The existence of an embedding $\mathbb{G}_m^3\hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3\setminus B$ implies that $B$ has coregularity zero. In this article, we initiate the classification of coregularity zero slc quartic surfaces $B\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ for which $\mathbb{P}^3\setminus B$ contains an algebraic torus $\mathbb{G}_m^3$. Equivalently, the classification of cluster type pairs $(\mathbb{P}^3,B)$. Along the way, we give criteria for a log Calabi--Yau pair $(X,B)$ over a toric variety $T$ to be of cluster type.

The geometric cone conjecture in relative dimension two

Let $X\rightarrow S$ be a fibration of relative dimension at most two and let $(X,Δ)$ be a klt pair for which $K_X+Δ\equiv_S 0$. We show that there are only finitely many Mori chambers and Mori faces in the movable effective cone $\mathcal{M}^e(X/S)$ up to the action of relative pseudo-automorphisms of $X/S$ preserving $Δ$.

Toric models of smooth Fano threefolds

We prove that a general rational smooth Fano threefold admits a toric model. More precisely, for a general rational smooth Fano threefold $X$, we show the existence of a boundary divisor $D$ for which $(X,D)\simeq_{\rm cbir} (\mathbb{P}^3,H_0+H_1+H_2+H_3)$, where the $H_i$'s are the coordinate hyperplanes. In particular, a general rational smooth Fano threefold has birational complexity zero. We argue that the three conditions: rationality, generality, and smoothness are indeed necessary for the theorem.

Reductive quotients of klt singularities

We prove that the quotient of a klt type singularity by a reductive group is of klt type. In particular, given a klt variety $X$ endowed with the action of a reductive group $G$ and admitting a quasi-projective good quotient $X\rightarrow X/\!/G$, we can find a boundary $B$ on $X/\!/G$ so that the pair $(X/\!/G,B)$ is klt. This applies for example to GIT-quotients of klt varieties. Our main result has consequences for complex spaces obtained as quotients of Hamiltonian Kähler $G$-manifolds, for collapsings of homogeneous vector bundles as introduced by Kempf, and for good moduli spaces of smooth Artin stacks. In particular, it implies that the good moduli space parametrizing $n$-dimensional K-polystable Fano manifolds of volume $v$ has klt type singularities. As a corresponding result regarding global geometry, we show that quotients of Mori Dream Spaces with klt Cox rings are Mori Dream Spaces with klt Cox ring. This in turn applies to show that projective GIT-quotients of varieties of Fano type are of Fano type; in particular, projective moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations are of Fano type.

Complements and coregularity of Fano varieties

We study the relation between the coregularity, the index of log Calabi-Yau pairs, and the complements of Fano varieties. We show that the index of a log Calabi-Yau pair $(X,B)$ of coregularity $1$ is at most $120λ^2$, where $λ$ is the Weil index of $K_X+B$. This extends a recent result due to Filipazzi, Mauri, and Moraga. We prove that a Fano variety of absolute coregularity $0$ admits either a $1$-complement or a $2$-complement. In the case of Fano varieties of absolute coregularity $1$, we show that they admit an $N$-complement with $N$ at most 6. Applying the previous results, we prove that a klt singularity of absolute coregularity $0$ admits either a $1$-complement or $2$-complement. Furthermore, a klt singularity of absolute coregularity $1$ admits an $N$-complement with $N$ at most 6. This extends the classic classification of $A,D,E$-type klt surface singularities to arbitrary dimensions. Similar results are proved in the case of coregularity $2$. In the course of the proof, we prove a novel canonical bundle formula for pairs with bounded relative coregularity. In the case of coregularity at least $3$, we establish analogous statements under the assumption of the index conjecture and the boundedness of B-representations.
