An enhanced uncertainty principle for the Vaserstein distance

We improve some recent results of Sagiv and Steinerberger that quantify the following uncertainty principle: for a function $f$ with mean zero, either the size of the zero set of the function or the cost of transporting the mass of the positive part of $f$ to its negative part must be big. We also provide a sharp upper estimate of the transport cost of the positive part of an eigenfunction of the Laplacian. This proves a conjecture of Steinerberger and provides a lower bound of the size of the nodal set of the eigenfunction.

Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund Inequalities for Polynomials in Bergmann and Hardy Spaces

We study the relationship between sampling sequences in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces of analytic functions and Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities in subspaces of polynomials. We focus on the study of the Hardy space and the Bergman space in one variable because they provide two settings with a strikingly different behavior.

Strict density inequalities for sampling and interpolation in weighted spaces of holomorphic functions

Answering a question of Lindholm, we prove strict density inequalities for sampling and interpolation in Fock spaces of entire functions in several complex variables defined by a plurisubharmonic weight. In particular, these spaces do not admit a set that is simultaneously sampling and interpolating. To prove optimality of the density conditions, we construct sampling sets with a density arbitrarily close to the critical density. The techniques combine methods from several complex variables (estimates for $\bar \partial$) and the theory of localized frames in general reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (with no analyticity assumed). The abstract results on Fekete points and deformation of frames may be of independent interest.

Contractive inequalities for Hardy spaces

We state and discuss several interrelated results, conjectures, and questions regarding contractive inequalities for classical $H^p$ spaces of the unit disc. We study both coefficient estimates in terms of weighted $\ell^2$ sums and the Riesz projection viewed as a map from $L^q$ to $H^p$ with $q\ge p$. Some numerical evidence is given that supports our conjectures.

Contractive inequalities for Bergman spaces and multiplicative Hankel forms

We consider sharp inequalities for Bergman spaces of the unit disc, establishing analogues of the inequality in Carleman's proof of the isoperimetric inequality and of Weissler's inequality for dilations. By contractivity and a standard tensorization procedure, the unit disc inequalities yield corresponding inequalities for the Bergman spaces of Dirichlet series. We use these results to study weighted multiplicative Hankel forms associated with the Bergman spaces of Dirichlet series, reproducing most of the known results on multiplicative Hankel forms associated with the Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series. In addition, we find a direct relationship between the two type of forms which does not exist in lower dimensions. Finally, we produce some counter-examples concerning Carleson measures on the infinite polydisc.

Asymptotically optimal designs on compact algebraic manifolds

We find t-designs on compact algebraic manifolds with a number of points comparable to the dimension of the space of polynomials of degree t on the manifold. This generalizes results on the sphere by Bondarenko, Radchenko and Viazovska. Of special interest is the particular case of the Grassmannians where our results improve the bounds that had been proved previously.

Energy and discrepancy of rotationally invariant determinantal point processes in high dimensional spheres

We study expected Riesz s-energies and linear statistics of some determinantal processes on the sphere. In particular, we compute the expected Riesz and logarithmic energies of the determinantal processes given by the reproducing kernel of the space of spherical harmonics. This kernel defines the so called harmonic ensemble on the sphere. With these computations we improve previous estimates for the discrete minimal energy of configurations of points in the sphere. We prove a comparison result for Riesz 2-energies of points defined through determinantal point processes associated to isotropic kernels. As a corollary we get that the Riesz 2-energy of the harmonic ensemble is optimal among ensembles defined by isotropic kernels with the same trace. Finally, we study the variance of smooth and rough linear statistics for the harmonic ensemble and compare the results with the variance for the spherical ensemble.

Sampling of real multivariate polynomials and pluripotential theory

We consider the problem of stable sampling of multivariate real polynomials of large degree in a general framework where the polynomials are defined on an affine real algebraic variety $M$, equipped with a weighted measure. In particular, this framework contains the well-known setting of trigonometric polynomials (when $M$ is a torus equipped with its invariant measure), where the limit of large degree corresponds to a high frequency limit, as well as the classical setting of one-variable orthogonal algebraic polynomials (when $M$ is the real line equipped with a suitable measure), where the sampling nodes can be seen as generalizations of the zeros of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. It is shown that a necessary condition for sampling, in the general setting, is that the asymptotic density of the sampling points is greater than the density of the corresponding weighted equilibrium measure of $M$, as defined in pluripotential theory. This result thus generalizes the well-known Landau type results for sampling on the torus, where the corresponding critical density corresponds to the Nyqvist rate, as well as the classical result saying that the zeros of orthogonal polynomials become equidistributed with respect to the logarithmic equilibrium measure, as the degree tends to infinity.

Deformation of Gabor systems

We introduce a new notion for the deformation of Gabor systems. Such deformations are in general nonlinear and, in particular, include the standard jitter error and linear deformations of phase space. With this new notion we prove a strong deformation result for Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz sequences that covers the known perturbation and deformation results. Our proof of the deformation theorem requires a new characterization of Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz sequences. It is in the style of Beurling's characterization of sets of sampling for bandlimited functions and extends significantly the known characterization of Gabor frames "without inequalities" from lattices to non-uniform sets.

Uniformly bounded orthonormal polynomials on the sphere

Given any $\varepsilon>0$, we construct an orthonormal system of $n_k$ uniformly bounded polynomials of degree at most $k$ on the unit sphere in $\mathbb R^{m+1}$ where $n_k$ is bigger than $1-\varepsilon$ times the dimension of the space of polynomials of degree at most $k$. Similarly we construct an orthonormal system of sections of powers $L^k$ of a positive holomorphic line bundle on a compact Kähler manifold with cardinality bigger than $1-\varepsilon$ times the dimension of the space of global holomorphic sections to $L^k$.

Equidistribution estimates for Fekete points on complex manifolds

We study the equidistribution of Fekete points in a compact complex manifold. These are extremal point configurations defined through sections of powers of a positive line bundle. Their equidistribution is a known result. The novelty of our approach is that we relate them to the problem of sampling and interpolation on line bundles, which allows us to estimate the equidistribution of the Fekete points quantitatively. In particular we estimate the Kantorovich-Wasserstein distance of the Fekete points to its limiting measure. The sampling and interpolation arrays on line bundles are a subject of independent interest, and we provide necessary density conditions through the classical approach of Landau, that in this context measures the local dimension of the space of sections of the line bundle. We obtain a complete geometric characterization of sampling and interpolation arrays in the case of compact manifolds of dimension one, and we prove that there are no arrays of both sampling and interpolation in the more general setting of semipositive line bundles.

Bandlimited Lipschitz functions

We study the space of bandlimited Lipschitz functions in one variable. In particular we provide a geometrical description of the natural interpolating and sampling sequences for this space. We also find a description of the trace of such functions to sequences of critical density in terms of a cancellation condition.

The maximum voltage drop in an on-chip power distribution network: analysis of square, triangular and hexagonal power pad arrangements

A mathematical model of the voltage drop which arises in on-chip power distribution networks is used to compare the maximum voltage drop in the case of different geometric arrangements of the pads supplying power to the chip. These include the square or Manhattan power pad arrangement which currently predominates, as well as equilateral triangular and hexagonal arrangements. In agreement with findings in the literature and with physical and SPICE models, the equilateral power pad arrangement, independent of the underlying power mesh configuration, is found to minimize the maximum voltage drop. This headline finding is a consequence of relatively simple formulas for the voltage drop, with explicit error bounds, which are established using complex analysis techniques, and elliptic functions in particular.

Reverse Carleson measures in Hardy spaces

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a measure $μ$ in the closed unit disk to be a reverse Carleson measure for Hardy spaces. This extends a previous result of Lefévre, Li, Queffélec and Rodr\'ıguez-Piazza \cite{LLQR}. We also provide a simple example showing that the analogue for the Paley-Wiener space does not hold. This example can be generalised to model spaces associated to one-component inner functions.

Stable sampling and Fourier multipliers

We study the relationship between stable sampling sequences for bandlimited functions in $L^p(\R^n)$ and the Fourier multipliers in $L^p$. In the case that the sequence is a lattice and the spectrum is a fundamental domain for the lattice the connection is complete. In the case of irregular sequences there is still a partial relationship.

Inhomogenous random zero sets

We construct random point processes in the complex plane that are asymptotically close to a given doubling measure. The processes we construct are the zero sets of random entire functions that are constructed through generalised Fock spaces. We offer two alternative constructions, one via bases for these spaces and another via frames, and we show that for both constructions the average distribution of the zero set is close to the given doubling measure, and that the variance is much less than the variance of the corresponding Poisson point process. We prove some asymptotic large deviation estimates for these processes, which in particular allow us to estimate the `hole probability', the probability that there are no zeroes in a given open bounded subset of the plane. We also show that the `smooth linear statistics' are asymptotically normal, under an additional regularity hypothesis on the measure. These generalise previous results by Sodin and Tsirelson for the Lebesgue measure.
