The Galois characterisation of $p$-adically closed fields -- A modern perspective

In 1927, Artin and Schreier showed that a field is real closed if and only if its absolute Galois group has order two. Inspired by this characterisation and drawing on earlier work of Neukirch, Pop conjectured the following $p$-adic analogue: a field is $p$-adically closed if and only if its absolute Galois group is isomorphic to that of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. In 1995, the conjecture was independently solved by Efrat for $p \ne 2$ and by Koenigsmann in full generality. Using novel techniques in the theory of valued fields developed over the last 25 years, we give a new, elementary, and self-contained proof of this theorem, with a Galois characterisation of henselianity at the heart of the proof and without relying on Galois cohomology. We further highlight connections to the recent work of Jahnke-Kartas on perfectoid fields and model-theoretic transfer techniques. We provide a systematic account of all of our methods to encourage further investigations.

An elementary proof of the local Kronecker-Weber theorem

We will present a novel elementary, self-contained, and explicit proof of the local Kronecker-Weber theorem. Apart from discrete valuation theory, it does not make use of any tools beyond those introduced in a second undergraduate course on algebra. In particular, we will not make use of results from local class field theory or Galois cohomology.

Recovering p-adic valuations from pro-p Galois groups

Let $K$ be a field with $G_K(2) \simeq G_{\mathbb{Q}}(2)$, where $G_F(2)$ denotes the maximal pro-2 quotient of the absolute Galois group of a field $F$. We prove that then $K$ admits a (non-trivial) valuation $v$ which is 2-henselian and has residue field $\mathbb{F}_2$. Furthermore, $v(2)$ is a minimal positive element in the value group $\Gamma_v$ and $[\Gamma_v:2\Gamma_v]=2$. This forms the first positive result on a more general conjecture about recovering $p$-adic valuations from pro-$p$ Galois groups which we formulate precisely. As an application, we show how this result can be used to easily obtain number-theoretic information, by giving an independent proof of a strong version of the birational section conjecture for smooth, complete curves $X$ over $\mathbb{Q}_2$, as well as an analogue for varieties.

Defining coarsenings of valuations

We study the question which henselian fields admit definable henselian valuations (with or without parameters). We show that every field which admits a henselian valuation with non-divisible value group admits a parameter-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuation. In equicharacteristic $0$, we give a complete characterization of henselian fields admitting a parameter-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuation. We also obtain partial characterization results of fields admitting 0-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuations. We then draw some Galois-theoretic conclusions from our results.

Uniformly defining $p$-henselian valuations

Admitting a non-trivial $p$-henselian valuation is a weaker assumption on a field than admitting a non-trivial henselian valuation. Unlike henselianity, $p$-henselianity is an elementary property in the language of rings. We are interested in the question when a field admits a non-trivial 0-definable $p$-henselian valuation (in the language of rings). We give a classification of elementary classes of fields in which the canonical $p$-henselian valuation is uniformly 0-definable. We then apply this to show that there is a definable valuation inducing the ($t$-)henselian topology on any ($t$-)henselian field which is neither separably nor real closed.

On a question of Abraham Robinson's

In this note we give a negative answer to Abraham Robinson's question whether a finitely generated extension of an undecidable field is always undecidable. We construct 'natural' undecidable fields of transcendence degree 1 over Q all of whose proper finite extensions are decidable. We also construct undecidable algebraic extensions of Q that allow decidable finite extensions.

Undecidability in number theory

These lecture notes cover classical undecidability results in number theory, Hilbert's 10th problem and recent developments around it, also for rings other than the integers. It also contains a sketch of the authors result that the integers are universally definable in the rationals.

An existential 0-definition of F_q[[t]] in F_q((t))

We show that the valuation ring F_q[[t]] in the local field F_q((t)) is existentially definable in the language of rings with no parameters. The method is to use the definition of the henselian topology following the work of Prestel-Ziegler to give an existential-F_q-definable bounded neighbouhood of 0. Then we `tweak' this set by subtracting, taking roots, and applying Hensel's Lemma in order to find an existential-F_q-definable subset of F_q[[t]] which contains tF_q[[t]]. Finally, we use the fact that F_q is defined by the formula x^q-x=0 to extend the definition to the whole of F_q[[t]] and to rid the definition of parameters. Several extensions of the theorem are obtained, notably an existential 0-definition of the valuation ring of a non-trivial valuation with divisible value group.

Definable henselian valuations

In this note we investigate the question whether a henselian valued field carries a non-trivial 0-definable henselian valuation (in the language of rings). It follows from the work of Prestel and Ziegler that there are henselian valued fields which do not admit a 0-definable non-trivial henselian valuation. We give conditions on the residue field which ensure the existence of a parameter-free definiton. In particular, we show that a henselian valued field admits a non-trivial 0-definable valuation when the residue field is separably closed or sufficiently non-henselian, or when the absolute Galois group of the (residue) field is non-universal.

Defining $\mathbb{Z}$ in $\mathbb{Q}$

We show that ${\mathbb Z}$ is definable in ${\mathbb Q}$ by a universal first-order formula in the language of rings. We also present an $\forall\exists$-formula for ${\mathbb Z}$ in ${\mathbb Q}$ with just one universal quantifier. We exhibit new diophantine subsets of ${\mathbb Q}$ like the complement of the image of the norm map under a quadratic extension, and we give an elementary proof of the fact that the set of non-squares is diophantine. Finally, we show that there is no existential formula for ${\mathbb Z}$ in ${\mathbb Q}$, provided one assumes a strong variant of the Bombieri-Lang Conjecture for varieties over ${\mathbb Q}$ with many ${\mathbb Q}$-rational points.

On the "Section Conjecture" in anabelian geometry

Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus >1 over a field K which is finitely generated over the rationals. The section conjecture in Grothendieck's anabelian geometry says that the sections of the canonical projection from the arithmetic fundamental group of X onto the absolute Galois group of K are (up to conjugation) in one-to-one correspondence with K-rational points of X. The birational variant conjectures a similar correspondence where the fundamental group is replaced by the absolute Galois group of the function field K(X). The present paper proves the birational section conjecture for all X when K is replaced e.g. by the field of p-adic numbers. It disproves both conjectures for the field of real or p-adic algebraic numbers. And it gives a purely group theoretic characterization of the sections induced by K-rational points of X in the birational setting over almost arbitrary fields. As a biproduct we obtain Galois theoretic criteria for radical solvability of polynomial equations in more than one variable, and for a field to be PAC, to be large, or to be Hilbertian.

Relatively projective groups as absolute Galois groups

By two well-known results, one of Ax, one of Lubotzky and van den Dries, a profinite group is projective iff it is isomorphic to the absolute Galois group of a pseudo-algebraically closed field. This paper gives an analogous characterization of relatively projective profinite groups as absolute Galois groups of regularly closed fields.
