The quantum Hall plateau transition at order 1/N

The localization behavior of noninteracting two-dimensional electrons in a random potential and strong magnetic field is of fundamental interest for the physics of the quantum Hall effect. In order to understand the emergence of power-law delocalization near the discrete extended-state energies $E_n = \hbar ω_c (n+{1/2})$, we study a generalization of the disorder-averaged Liouvillian framework for the lowest Landau level to $N$ flavors of electron densities (N=1 for the physical case). We find analytically the large-N limit and 1/N corrections for all disorder strengths: at $N = \infty$ this gives an estimate of the critical conductivity, and at order 1/N an estimate of the localization exponent $ν$. The localization properties of the analytically tractable $N \gg 1$ theory seem to be continuously connected to those of the exact quantum Hall plateau transition at $N = 1$.

Non-equilibrium tunneling into general quantum Hall edge states

In this paper we formulate the theory of tunneling into general Abelian fractional quantum Hall edge states. In contrast to the simple Laughlin states, a number of charge transfer processes must be accounted for. Nonetheless, it is possible to identify a unique value corresponding to dissipationless transport as the asymptotic large-$V$ conductance through a tunneling junction, and find fixed points (CFT boundary conditions) corresponding to this value. The symmetries of a given edge tunneling problem determine the appropriate boundary condition, and the boundary condition determines the strong-coupling operator content and current noise.

Anomalous magnetic splitting of the Kondo resonance

The splitting of the Kondo resonance in the density of states of an Anderson impurity in finite magnetic field is calculated from the exact Bethe-ansatz solution. The result gives an estimate of the electron spectral function for nonzero magnetic field and Kondo temperature, with consequences for transport experiments on quantum dots in the Kondo regime. The strong correlations of the Kondo ground state cause a significant low-temperature reduction of the peak splitting. Explicit formulae are found for the shift and broadening of the Kondo peaks. A likely cause of the problems of large-N approaches to spin-1/2 impurities at finite magnetic field is suggested.

Nonlinear Radiation Pressure and Stochasticity in Ultraintense Laser Fields

The radiation force on a single electron in an ultraintense plane wave ($a = eE/mcω\sim 1$) is calculated and shown to be proportional to $a^4$ in the high-$a$ limit for arbitrary waveform and polarization. The cyclotron motion of an electron in a constant magnetic field and an ultraintense plane wave is numerically found to be quasiperiodic even in the high-$a$ limit if the magnetic field is not too strong, as suggested by previous analytical work. A strong magnetic field causes highly chaotic electron motion and the boundary of the highly chaotic region of parameter space is determined numerically. Applications to experiments and astrophysics are briefly discussed.

Classification of Disordered Phases of Quantum Hall Edge States

The effects of impurity scattering on a general Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) edge state are analyzed within the chiral-Luttinger-liquid model of low-energy edge dynamics. We find that some disordered edges can have several different phases characterized by different symmetries. The stable impurity edge phases are in general more symmetric than the original clean system and demonstrate the phenomenon of dynamical symmetry restoration at low energies and long length scales. The phase transitions between different disordered phases are characterized by broken symmetries and obey Landau's symmetry breaking principle for continuous phase transitions. Phase diagrams for various edges are found using a new system of coordinates for the interactions between modes in a quantum Hall edge. The temperature dependence of tunneling through a point contact is calculated and is found to be able to distinguish different impurity edge phases of the same FQH state.
