Preprojective algebras and MV polytopes

The purpose of this paper is to apply the theory of MV polytopes to the study of components of Lusztig's nilpotent varieties. Along the way, we introduce reflection functors for modules over the non-deformed preprojective algebra of a quiver.

Lectures on geometric constructions of the irreducible representations of GL_n

We give an exposition of three geometric constructions of the irreducible representations of GL_n. In particular, we discuss Borel-Weil theory, the Ginzburg construction, and the geometric Satake construction. We also explain how to deduce the Ginzburg construction from the geometric Satake equivalence. These are lecture notes for a lecture series at the Summer School on geometric representation theory and extended affine Lie algebras held at University of Ottawa in June 2009.

Categorical geometric skew Howe duality

We categorify the R-matrix isomorphism between tensor products of minuscule representations of U_q(sl(n)) by constructing an equivalence between the derived categories of coherent sheaves on the corresponding convolution products in the affine Grassmannian. The main step in the construction is a categorification of representations of U_q(sl(2)) which are related to representations of U_q(sl(n)) by quantum skew Howe duality. The resulting equivalence is part of the program of algebro-geometric categorification of Reshitikhin-Turaev tangle invariants developed by the first two authors.

Coherent sheaves and categorical sl(2) actions

We introduce the concept of a geometric categorical sl(2) action and relate it to that of a strong categorical sl(2) action. The latter is a special kind of 2-representation in the sense of Rouquier. The main result is that a geometric categorical sl(2) action induces a strong categorical sl(2) action. This allows one to apply the theory of strong sl(2) actions to various geometric situations. Our main example is the construction of a geometric categorical sl(2) action on the derived category of coherent sheaves on cotangent bundles of Grassmannians.

The Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian and symplectic knot homology

Seidel-Smith and Manolescu constructed knot homology theories using symplectic fibrations whose total spaces were certain varieties of matrices. These knot homology theories were associated to $SL(n) $ and tensor products of the standard and dual representations. In this paper, we place their geometric setups in a natural, general framework. For any complex reductive group and any sequence of minuscule dominant weights, we construct a fibration of affine varieties over a configuration space. The middle cohomology of these varieties is isomorphic to the space of invariants in the corresponding tensor product of representations. Our construction uses the Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian and the geometric Satake correspondence.

Knot homology via derived categories of coherent sheaves II, sl(m) case

Using derived categories of equivariant coherent sheaves we construct a knot homology theory which categorifies the quantum sl(m) knot polynomial. Our knot homology naturally satisfies the categorified MOY relations and is conjecturally isomorphic to Khovanov-Rozansky homology. Our construction is motivated by the geometric Satake correspondence and is related to Manolescu's by homological mirror symmetry.

The crystal commutor and Drinfeld's unitarized R-matrix

Drinfeld defined a unitarized R-matrix for any quantum group U_q(g). This gives a commutor for the category of U_q(g) representations, making it into a coboundary category. Henriques and Kamnitzer defined another commutor which also gives U_q(g) representations the structure of a coboundary category. We show that a particular case of Henriques and Kamnitzer's construction agrees with Drinfeld's commutor. We then describe the action of Drinfeld's commutor on a tensor product of two crystal bases, and explain the relation to the crystal commutor.

A definition of the crystal commutor using Kashiwara's involution

Henriques and Kamnitzer defined and studied a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite dimentional complex reductive Lie algebra. We show that the action of this commutor on highest weight elements can be expressed very simply using Kashiwara's involution on the Verma crystal.

Knot homology via derived categories of coherent sheaves I, sl(2) case

Using derived categories of equivariant coherent sheaves, we construct a categorification of the tangle calculus associated to sl(2) and its standard representation. Our construction is related to that of Seidel-Smith by homological mirror symmetry. We show that the resulting doubly graded knot homology agrees with Khovanov homology.

Hives and the fibres of the convolution morphism

By the geometric Satake correspondence, the number of components of certain fibres of the affine Grassmannian convolution morphism equals the tensor product multiplicity for representations of the Langlands dual group. On the other hand, in the case of GL_n, combinatorial objects called hives also count tensor product multiplicities. The purpose of this paper is to give a simple bijection between hives and the components of these fibres. In particular, we give a description of the individual components. We also describe a conjectural generalization involving the octahedron recurrence.

The cohomology ring of the real locus of the moduli space of stable curves of genus 0 with marked points

We compute the Poincare polynomial and the cohomology algebra with rational coefficeints of the manifold M_n of real points of the moduli space of algebraic curves of genus 0 with n labeled points. This cohomology is a quadratic algebra, and we conjecture that it is Koszul. We also compute the 2-local torsion in the cohomology of M_n. As was shown by E. Rains in arXiv:math/0610743 the cohomology of M_n does not have odd torsion, so that the above determines the additive structure of the integral homology and cohomology. Further, we prove that the rational homology operad of M_n is the operad of 2-Gerstenhaber algebras, which is closely related to the Hanlon-Wachs operad of 2-Lie algebras (generated by a ternary bracket). Finally, using Drinfeld's theory of quantization of coboundary Lie quasibialgebras, we show that a large series of representations of the quadratic dual Lie algebra L_n of H^*(M_n,Q) (associated to such quasibialgebras) factors through the the natural projection of L_n to the associated graded Lie algebra of the prounipotent completion of the fundamental group of M_n. This leads us to conjecture that the said projection is an isomorphism, which would imply a formula for lower central series ranks of the fundamental group. On the other hand, we show that the spaces M_n are not formal starting from n=6.

The crystal structure on the set of Mirkovic-Vilonen polytopes

In an earlier work, we proved that MV polytopes parameterize both Lusztig's canonical basis and the Mirkovic-Vilonen cycles on the Affine Grassmannian. Each of these sets has a crystal structure (due to Kashiwara-Lusztig on the canonical basis side and due to Braverman-Finkelberg-Gaitsgory on the MV cycles side). We show that these two crystal structures agree. As an application, we consider a conjecture of Anderson-Mirkovic which describes the BFG crystal structure on the level of MV polytopes. We prove their conjecture for sl_n and give a counterexample for sp_6. Finally we explain how Kashiwara data can be recovered from MV polytopes.

Crystals and coboundary categories

Following an idea of A. Berenstein, we define a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra. We show that this endows the category of crystals with the structure of a coboundary category. Similar to the case of braided categories, there is a group naturally acting on multiple tensor products in coboundary categories. We call this group the cactus group and identify it as the fundamental group of the moduli space of marked real genus zero stable curves.

The octahedron recurrence and gl(n) crystals

We study the hive model of gl(n) tensor products, following Knutson, Tao, and Woodward. We define a coboundary category where the tensor product is given by hives and where the associator and commutor are defined using a modified octahedron recurrence. We then prove that this category is equivalent to the category of crystals for the Lie algebra gl(n). The proof of this equivalence uses a new connection between the octahedron recurrence and the Jeu de Taquin and Schutzenberger involution procedures on Young tableaux.

Mirkovic-Vilonen cycles and polytopes

We give an explicit description of the Mirkovic-Vilonen cycles on the affine Grassmannian for arbitrary complex reductive groups. We also give a combinatorial characterization of the MV polytopes. We prove that a polytope is an MV polytope if and only if it a lattice polytope whose defining hyperplanes are parallel to those of the Weyl polytopes and whose 2-faces are rank 2 MV polytopes. As an application, we give a bijection between Lusztig's canonical basis and the set of MV polytopes.
