Non-Existence of Black Hole Solutions for a Spherically Symmetric, Static Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell System

We consider for j=1/2, 3/2,... a spherically symmetric, static system of (2j+1) Dirac particles, each having total angular momentum j. The Dirac particles interact via a classical gravitational and electromagnetic field. The Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell equations for this system are derived. It is shown that, under weak regularity conditions on the form of the horizon, the only black hole solutions of the EDM equations are the Reissner-Nordstrom solutions. In other words, the spinors must vanish identically. Applied to the gravitational collapse of a "cloud" of spin-1/2-particles to a black hole, our result indicates that the Dirac particles must eventually disappear inside the event horizon.

Nonlinear Dynamical Stability of Newtonian Rotating White Dwarfs and Supermassive Stars

We prove general nonlinear stability and existence theorems for rotating star solutions which are axi-symmetric steady-state solutions of the compressible isentropic Euler-Poisson equations in 3 spatial dimensions. We apply our results to rotating and non-rotating white dwarf, and rotating high density supermassive (extreme relativistic) stars, stars which are in convective equilibrium and have uniform chemical composition. This paper is a continuation of our earlier work ([28]).

Existence and Nonlinear Stability of Rotating Star Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Poisson Equations

We prove existence of rotating star solutions which are steady-state solutions of the compressible isentropic Euler-Poisson (EP) equations in 3 spatial dimensions, with prescribed angular momentum and total mass. This problem can be formulated as a variational problem of finding a minimizer of an energy functional in a broader class of functions having less symmetry than those functions considered in the classical Auchmuty-Beals paper. We prove the nonlinear dynamical stability of these solutions with perturbations having the same total mass and symmetry as the rotating star solution. We also prove local in time stability of $W^{1, \infty}(\RR^3)$ solutions where the perturbations are entropy-weak solutions of the EP equations. Finally, we give a uniform (in time) a-priori estimate for entropy-weak solutions of the EP equations.

Rotating Fluids with Self-Gravitation in Bounded Domains

In this paper, we study the steady solutions of Euler-Poisson equations in bounded domains with prescribed angular velocity. This models a rotating Newtonian star consisting of a compressible perfect fluid with given equation of state $P=e^Sρ^γ$. When the domain is a ball and the angular velocity is constant, we obtain both existence and non-existence theorems, depending on the adiabatic gas constant $γ$. In addition we obtain some interesting properties of the solutions; e.g., monotonicity of the radius of the star with both angular velocity and central density. We also prove that the radius of a rotating spherically symmetric star, with given constant angular velocity and constant entropy, is uniformly bounded independent of the central density . This is physically striking and in sharp contrast to the case of the nonrotating star. For general domains and variable angular velocities, both an existence result for the isentropic equations of state and non-existence result for the non-isentropic equation of state are also obtained.

The Long-Time Dynamics of Dirac Particles in the Kerr-Newman Black Hole Geometry

We consider the Cauchy problem for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry outside the event horizon. We derive an integral representation for the Dirac propagator involving the solutions of the ODEs which arise in Chandrasekhar's separation of variables. It is proved that for initial data in L^\infty_loc near the event horizon with L^2 decay at infinity, the probability of the Dirac particle to be in any compact region of space tends to zero as t goes to infinity. This means that the Dirac particle must either disappear in the black hole or escape to infinity.

Cosmology, Black Holes and Shock Waves Beyond the Hubble Length

We construct exact, entropy satisfying shock wave solutions of the Einstein equations for a perfect fluid which extend the Oppeheimer-Snyder (OS) model to the case of non-zero pressure, {\it inside the Black Hole}. These solutions put forth a new Cosmological Model in which the expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe emerges from the Big Bang with a shock wave at the leading edge of the expansion, analogous to a classical shock wave explosion. This explosion is large enough to account for the enormous scale on which the galaxies and the background radiation appear uniform. In these models, the shock wave must lie beyond one Hubble length from the FRW center, this threshhold being the boundary across which the bounded mass lies inside its own Schwarzshild radius, $2M/r>1,$ and thus the shock wave solution evolves inside a Black Hole. The entropy condition, which breaks the time symmetry, implies that the shock wave must weaken until it eventually settles down to a zero pressure OS interface, bounding a {\em finite} total mass, that emerges from the White Hole event horizon of an ambient Schwarzschild spacetime. However, unlike shock matching outside a Black Hole, the equation of state $p=\frac{c^2}{3}ρ,$ the equation of state at the earliest stage of Big Bang physics, is {\em distinguished} at the instant of the Big Bang--for this equation of state alone, the shock wave emerges from the Big Bang at a finite nonzero speed, the speed of light, decelerating to a subluminous wave from that time onward. These shock wave solutions indicate a new cosmological model in which the Big Bang arises from a localized explosion occurring inside the Black Hole of an asymptotically flat Schwarzschild spacetime.

Shock-Wave Cosmology Inside a Black Hole

We construct a class of global exact solutions of the Einstein equations that extend the Oppeheimer-Snyder (OS) model to the case of non-zero pressure, {\em inside the Black Hole}, by incorporating a shock wave at the leading edge of the expansion of the galaxies, arbitrarily far beyond the Hubble length in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime. Here the expanding FRW universe emerges behind a subluminous blast wave that explodes outward from the FRW center at the instant of the Big Bang. The total mass behind the shock decreases as the shock wave expands, and the entropy condition implies that the shock wave must weaken to the point where it settles down to an OS interface, (bounding a {\em finite} total mass), that eventually emerges from the White Hole event horizon of an ambient Schwarzschild spacetime. The entropy condition breaks the time symmetry of the Einstein equations, selecting the explosion over the implosion. These shock wave solutions indicate a new cosmological model in which the Big Bang arises from a localized explosion occurring inside the Black Hole of a Schwarzschild spacetime.

Decay Rates and Probability Estimates for Massive Dirac Particles in the Kerr-Newman Black Hole Geometry

The Cauchy problem is considered for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry, for smooth initial data with compact support outside the event horizon and bounded angular momentum. We prove that the Dirac wave function decays in L^\infty_loc at least at the rate t^{-5/6}. For generic initial data, this rate of decay is sharp. We derive a formula for the probability p that the Dirac particle escapes to infinity. For various conditions on the initial data, we show that p=0,1 or 0<p<1. The proofs are based on a refined analysis of the Dirac propagator constructed in gr-qc/0005088.

The Interaction of Dirac Particles with Non-Abelian Gauge Fields and Gravity - Bound States

We consider a spherically symmetric, static system of a Dirac particle interacting with classical gravity and an SU(2) Yang-Mills field. The corresponding Einstein-Dirac-Yang/Mills equations are derived. Using numerical methods, we find different types of soliton-like solutions of these equations and discuss their properties. Some of these solutions are stable even for arbitrarily weak gravitational coupling.

The Interaction of Dirac Particles with Non-Abelian Gauge Fields and Gravity - Black Holes

We consider a static, spherically symmetric system of a Dirac particle in a classical gravitational and SU(2) Yang-Mills field. We prove that the only black-hole solutions of the corresponding Einstein-Dirac-Yang/Mills equations are the Bartnik-McKinnon black-hole solutions of the SU(2) Einstein-Yang/Mills equations; thus the spinors must vanish identically. This indicates that the Dirac particles must either disappear into the black-hole or escape to infinity.

Non-Existence of Time-Periodic Solutions of the Dirac Equation in an Axisymmetric Black Hole Geometry

We prove that, in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman black hole geometry, the Dirac equation has no normalizable, time-periodic solutions. A key tool is Chandrasekhar's separation of the Dirac equation in this geometry. A similar non-existence theorem is established in a more general class of stationary, axisymmetric metrics in which the Dirac equation is known to be separable. These results indicate that, in contrast with the classical situation of massive particle orbits, a quantum mechanical Dirac particle must either disappear into the black hole or escape to infinity.

Some Recent Progress in Classical General Relativity

In this short survey paper, we discuss certain recent results in classical gravity. Our main attention is restricted to two topics: the positive mass conjecture and its extensions to the case with horizons, including the Penrose conjecture (Part I), and the interaction of gravity with other force fields and quantum-mechanical particles (Part II).

Non-Existence of Time-Periodic Solutions of the Dirac Equation in a Reissner-Nordstrom Black Hole Background

It is shown analytically that the Dirac equation has no normalizable, time-periodic solutions in a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole background; in particular, there are no static solutions of the Dirac equation in such a background field. The physical interpretation is that Dirac particles can either disappear into the black hole or escape to infinity, but they cannot stay on a periodic orbit around the black hole.

Particle-Like Solutions of the Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell Equations

We consider the coupled Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell equations for a static, spherically symmetric system of two fermions in a singlet spinor state. Soliton-like solutions are constructed numerically. The stability and the properties of the ground state solutions are discussed for different values of the electromagnetic coupling constant. We find solutions even when the electromagnetic coupling is so strong that the total interaction is repulsive in the Newtonian limit. Our solutions are regular and well-behaved; this shows that the combined electromagnetic and gravitational self-interaction of the Dirac particles is finite.

The Coupling of Gravity to Spin and Electromagnetism

The coupled Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell equations are considered for a static, spherically symmetric system of two fermions in a singlet spinor state. Stable soliton-like solutions are shown to exist, and we discuss the regularizing effect of gravity from a Feynman diagram point of view.
