Weighted uniform consistency of kernel density estimators

Let f_n denote a kernel density estimator of a continuous density f in d dimensions, bounded and positive. Let Ψ(t) be a positive continuous function such that \|Ψf^β\|_{\infty}<\infty for some 0<β<1/2. Under natural smoothness conditions, necessary and sufficient conditions for the sequence \sqrt\frac{nh_n^d}{2|\log h_n^d|}\|Ψ(t)(f_n(t)-Ef_n(t))\|_{\infty} to be stochastically bounded and to converge a.s. to a constant are obtained. Also, the case of larger values of βis studied where a similar sequence with a different norming converges a.s. either to 0 or to +\infty, depending on convergence or divergence of a certain integral involving the tail probabilities of Ψ(X). The results apply as well to some discontinuous not strictly positive densities.

Exponential and moment inequalities for U-statistics

A Bernstein-type exponential inequality for (generalized) canonical U-statistics of order 2 is obtained and the Rosenthal and Hoffmann-Jørgensen inequalities for sums of independent random variables are extended to (generalized) U-statistics of any order whose kernels are either nonnegative or canonical

The LIL for canonical U-statistics of order 2

Let X,X_1,X_2,... be independent identically distributed random variables and let h(x,y)=h(y,x) be a measurable function of two variables. It is shown that the bounded law of the iterated logarithm, $\limsup_n (n\log\log n)^{-1}|\sum_{1<= i< j<= n}h(X_i,X_j)|<\infty$ a.s., holds if and only if the following three conditions are satisfied: h is canonical for the law of X (that is Eh(X,y)=0 for almost y) and there exists $C<\infty$ such that, both, $E\min(h^2(X_1,X_2),u)<C\log\log u$ for all large u and $sup\{Eh(X_1,X_2)f(X_1)g(X_2):|f(X)|_2<1,\|g(X)\|_2<1, \|f\|_\infty<\infty, \|g\|_\infty<\infty\}< C$.

On the Gaussian measure of the intersection of symmetric, convex sets

The Gaussian Correlation Conjecture states that for any two symmetric, convex sets in n-dimensional space and for any centered, Gaussian measure on that space, the measure of the intersection is greater than or equal to the product of the measures. In this paper we obtain several results which substantiate this conjecture. For example, in the standard Gaussian case, we show there is a positive constant, c, such that the conjecture is true if the two sets are in the Euclidean ball of radius $c\sqrt{n}$. Further we show that if for every n the conjecture is true when the sets are in the Euclidean ball of radius $\sqrt{n}$, then it is true in general. Our most concrete result is that the conjecture is true if the two sets are (arbitrary) centered ellipsoids.

On the volume of the intersection of two $L_p^n$ balls

This note deals with the following problem, the case $p=1$, $q=2$ of which was introduced to us by Vitali Milman: What is the volume left in the $L_p^n$ ball after removing a t-multiple of the $L_q^n$ ball? Recall that the $L_r^n$ ball is the set $\{(t_1,t_2,\dots,t_n);\ t_i\in{\bf R},\ n^{-1}\sum_{i=1}^n|t_i|^r\le 1\}$ and note that for $0<p<q<\infty$ the $L_q^n$ ball is contained in the $L_p^n$ ball. In Corollary 4 we show that, after normalizing Lebesgue measure so that the volume of the $L_p^n$ ball is one, the answer to the problem above is of order $e^{-ct^pn^{p/q}}$ for $T<t<{1\over 2}n^ {{1\over p}-{1\over q}}$, where $c$ and $T$ depend on $p$ and $q$ but not on $n$. The main theorem, Theorem 3, deals with the corresponding question for the surface measure of the $L_p^n$ sphere.
