Characteristic classes of mixed Hodge modules

This paper gives an introduction and overview about recent developments on the interaction of the theories of characteristic classes and mixed Hodge theory for singular spaces in the complex algebraic context. It uses M. Saito's deep theory of mixed Hodge modules as a "black box", thinking about them as "constructible or perverse sheaves of Hodge structures", having the same functorial calculus of Grothendieck functors. For the "constant Hodge sheaf", one gets the "motivic characteristic classes" of Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura, whereas the classes of the "intersection homology Hodge sheaf" were studied by Cappell-Maxim-Shaneson. There are two versions of these characteristic classes. The K-theoretical classes capture information about the graded pieces of the filtered de Rham complex of the filtered D-module underlying a mixed Hodge module. Application of a suitable Todd class transformation then gives classes in homology. These classes are functorial for proper pushdown and exterior products, together with some other properties one would expect for a "good" theory of characteristic classes for singular spaces. For "admissible variation of mixed Hodge structures" they have an explicit classical description in terms of "logarithmic de Rham complexes". On a point space they correspond to a specialization of the Hodge polynomial of a mixed Hodge structure, which one gets by forgetting the weight filtration.

Symmetric products of mixed Hodge modules

Generalizing a theorem of Macdonald, we show a formula for the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the symmetric products of bounded complexes of mixed Hodge modules by showing the existence of the canonical action of the symmetric group on the multiple external self-products of complexes of mixed Hodge modules. We also generalize a theorem of Hirzebruch and Zagier on the signature of the symmetric products of manifolds to the case of the symmetric products of symmetric parings on bounded complexes with constructible cohomology sheaves where the pairing is not assumed to be non-degenerate.

Twisted genera of symmetric products

We prove very general formulae for the generating series of (Hodge) genera of symmetric products with coefficients, which hold for complex quasi-projective varieties with any kind of singularities, and which include many of the classical results in the literature as special cases. Important specializations of our results include generating series for extensions of Hodge numbers and Hirzebruch genus to the singular setting and, in particular, generating series for Intersection cohomology Hodge numbers and Goresky-MacPherson Intersection cohomology signatures of symmetric products of complex projective varieties. A very general proof is given based on Kuenneth formulae and pre-lambda structures on the coefficient theory of a point. Moreover, Atiyah's approach to power operations in K-theory also works in this context, giving a nice description of the important related Adams operations. This last approach also allows us to introduce very interesting coefficients on the symmetric products.

Nearby cycles and characteristic classes of singular spaces

In this paper we give an introduction to our recent work on characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces based on some talks given at conferences in Strasbourg, Oberwolfach and Kagoshima. We explain the relation between nearby cycles for constructible functions or sheaves as well as for (relative) Grothendieck groups of algebraic varieties and mixed Hodge modules, and the specialization of characteristic classes of singular spaces like the Chern-, Todd-, Hirzebruch- and motivic Chern-classes. As an application we get a description of the differences between the corresponding virtual and functorial characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces in terms of vanishing cycles related to the singularities of the hypersurface.

Characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces

The Milnor-Hirzebruch class of a locally complete intersection X in an algebraic manifold M measures the difference between the (Poincare dual of the) Hirzebruch class of the virtual tangent bundle of X and, respectively, the Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura (homology) Hirzebruch class of X. In this note, we calculate the Milnor-Hirzebruch class of a globally defined algebraic hypersurface X in terms of the corresponding Hirzebruch invariants of singular strata in a Whitney stratification of X. Our approach is based on Schuermann's specialization property for the motivic Hirzebruch class transformation of Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura. The present results also yield calculations of Todd, Chern and L-type characteristic classes of hypersurfaces.

Specialization of motivic Hodge-Chern classes

In this paper we give a proof of the fact, that the motivic Hodge-Chern class transformation MHC_y and Hirzebruch class transformation MHT_y* for mixed Hodge modules and strictly specializable filtered D-modules commute with specialization in the algebraic and in a suitable complex analytic context. Here specialization in the Hodge- and D-module context means the corresponding nearby cycles defined in terms of the $V$-filtration of Malgrange-Kashiwara. This generalizes a corresponding specialization result of Verdier about MacPherson's Chern class transformation c_*.

Index formula for MacPherson cycles of affine algebraic varieties

We give explicit MacPherson cycles for the Chern-MacPherson class of a closed affine algebraic variety $X$ and for any constructible function $α$ with respect to a complex algebraic Whitney stratification of $X$. We define generalized degrees of the global polar varieties and of the MacPherson cycles and we prove a global index formula for the Euler characteristic of $α$. Whenever $α$ is the Euler obstruction of $X$, this index formula specializes to the Seade-Tibar-Verjovsky global counterpart of the Le-Teissier formula for the local Euler obstruction.

A survey of characteristic classes of singular spaces

A theory of characteristic classes of vector bundles and smooth manifolds plays an important role in the theory of smooth manifolds. An investigation of reasonable notions of characteristic classes of singular spaces started since a systematic study of singular spaces such as singular algebraic varieties. We make a quick survey of characteristic classes of singular varieties, mainly focusing on the functorial aspects of some important ones such as the singular versions of the Chern class, the Todd class and the Thom--Hirzebruch's L-class. Then we explain our recent "motivic" characteristic classes, which in a sense unify these three different theories of characteristic classes. We also discuss bivariant versions of them and characteristic classes of proalgebraic varieties, which are related to the motivic measures/integrations. Finally we explain some recent work on "stringy" versions of these theories, together with some references for "equivariant" counterparts.

Hirzebruch classes and motivic Chern classes for singular spaces

In this paper we study some new theories of characteristic homology classes for singular complex algebraic (or compactifiable analytic) spaces. We introduce a motivic Chern class transformation mC_{*}: K_{0}(var/X)-> G_{0}(X)[y], which generalizes the total λ-class of the cotangent bundle to singular spaces. Here K_{0}(var/X) is the relative Grothendieck group of complex algebraic varieties over X as introduced and studied by Looijenga and Bittner in relation to motivic integration, and G_{0}(X) is the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves of O_{X}-modules. We define a natural transformation T_{y*}: K_{0}(var/X)-> H_{*}(X,Q)[y] commuting with proper pushdown, which generalizes the corresponding Hirzebruch characteristic. T_{y*} is a homology class version of the motivic measure corresponding to suitable specialization of the well known Hodge polynomial. This transformation unifies the Chern class transformation of MacPherson and Schwartz (for y=-1), the Todd class transformation of the singular Riemann-Roch theorem of Baum-Fulton-MacPherson (for y=0) and the L-class transformation of Cappell-Shaneson (for y=1). In the simplest case of a normal Gorenstein variety with ``canonical singularities'' we also explain a relation among the ``stringy version'' of our characteristic classses, the elliptic class of Borisov-Libgober and the stringy Chern classes of Aluffi and De Fernex-Lupercio-Nevins-Uribe. Moreover, all our results can be extended to varieties over a base field k of characteristic 0.

On the dimension formula for the hyperfunction solutions of some holonomic D-modules

In this short note we improve a dimension formula of Takeuchi for the dimension of the hyperfunction solutions of some holonomic D-modules. Besides the constructibility result and local index formula of Kashiwara for the holomorphic solution complex, we only use a vanishing theorem of Lebeau together with a simple calculation in terms of constructible functions.

Hirzebruch classes and motivic Chern classes for singular (complex) algebraic varieties

In this paper we study some new theories of characteristic homology classes for singular complex algebraic varieties. First we introduce a natural transformation T_{y}: K_{0}(var/X) -> H_{*}(X,Q)[y] commuting with proper pushdown, which generalizes the corresponding Hirzebruch characteristic. Here K_{0}(var/X) is the relative Grothendieck group of complex algebraic varieties over X as introduced and studied by Looijenga and Bittner in relation to motivic integration. T_{y} is a homology class version of the motivic measure corresponding to a suitable specialization of the well known Hodge polynomial. This transformation unifies the Chern class transformation of MacPherson and Schwartz (for y=-1) and the Todd class transformation in the singular Riemann-Roch theorem of Baum-Fulton-MacPherson (for y=0). In fact, T_{y} is the composition of a generalized version of this Todd class transformation due to Yokura, and a new motivic Chern class transformation mC_{*}: K_{0}(var/X)-> G_{0}(X)[y], which generalizes the total lambda-class of the cotangent bundle to singular spaces. Here G_{0}(X) is the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves, and the construction of mC_{*} is based on some results from the theory of algebraic mixed Hodge modules due to M.Saito. In the final part of the paper we use the algebraic cobordism theory of Levine and Morel to lift mC_{*} further up to a natural transformation mC'_{*} from K_{0}(var/X) to a suitable universal Borel-Moore weak homology theory. Moreover, all our results can be extended to varieties over a base field k, which can be embedded into the complex numbers.

Bivariant Chern classes and Grothendieck transformations

The existence of bivariant Chern classes was conjectured by W.Fulton and R.MacPherson and proved by J.P.Brasselet for cellular morphisms of analytic varieties. In this paper we show that restricted to morphisms whose target varieties are possible singular but (rational) homology manifolds, the bivariant Chern classes (with rational coefficients) are uniquely determined. In the final sections we construct a unique bivariant Chern class satisfying a suitable normalization condition. In fact, it will be a special case of a general construction of unique Grothendieck transformations, which in a sense gives a positive answer to a corresponding question posed by Fulton and MacPherson. This construction generalizes and unifies previous attemps, in particular the main result of the paper math.AG/0209299.

A general construction of partial Grothendieck transformations

Fulton and MacPherson introduced the notion of bivariant theories and Grothendieck transformations related to Riemann-Roch-theorems. But there are many situations, where such a bivariant theory or a corresponding Grothendieck transformation is only partially known: characteristic classes of singular spaces (e.g. Stiefel-Whitney or Chern classes), cohomology operations (e.g. singular Adams Riemann-Roch and Steenrod operations for Chow groups) or equivariant theories (e.g. Lefschetz Riemann-Roch). We introduce in this paper a simpler notion of partial (weak) bivariant theories and partial Grothendieck transformations, which applies to all these examples. Our main theorem shows, that a natural transformation of covariant theories, which commutes with exterior products, automatically extends (uniquely) to such a partial Grothendieck transformation of suitable partial (weak) bivariant theories ! In the above geometric situations one has for example to consider only morphisms, whose target is a smooth manifold, or more generally, a suitable homology manifold.

A general intersection formula for Lagrangian cycles

We prove a generalization to the context of real geometry of an intersection formula for the vanishing cycle functor, which in the complex context is due to Dubson, Ginsburg, Le and Sabbah (after a conjecture of Deligne). It is also a generalization of similar results of Kashiwara-Schapira, where these authors work with a suitable assumption about the micro-support of the corresponding constructible complex of sheaves. We only use a similar assumption about the support of the corresponding characteristic cycle so that our result can be formulated in the language of constructible functions and Lagrangian cycles.

A generalized Verdier-type Riemann-Roch theorem for Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes

We give a general formula for the defect appearing in the Verdier-type Riemann-Roch formula for Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes in the case of a regular embedding. Our proof of this formula uses the constructible function version of Verdier's specialization functor, together with a specialization property of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes and the corresponding Riemann-Roch theorem for smooth morphisms. As a very special case we get a formula for the Milnor-class of a local complete intersection in a smooth manifold, which in the case of a hypersurface gives back a result of Parusinski-Pragacz.

On the comparison of different notions of geometric categories

We explain our notion of a Nash geometric category, which allows an easy comparison between the following different axiomatic notions of geometric categories: o-minimal structures on the real field, analytic geometric categories and X-sets (as defined by van den Dries, Miller and Shiota).
