Channel Performance Estimations with Extended Channel Probing

We test the concept of extended channel probing in an Optical Spectrum as a Service scenario in coherent optimized flex-grid long-haul and 10Gbit/s OOK optimized 100-GHz fixed-grid dispersion-managed legacy DWDM networks. An estimation accuracy better than +/- 0.1dB in GSNR implementation margin is obtained for both networks by using flexible coherent transceivers on lightpaths up to 822km on regional haul legacy network and up to 5738km on a long-haul network. We also explain, how to detect the operation regime of the channel by analyzing the received GSNR results from constant power spectral density (PSD) probing mode and constant signal power probing mode

QoT Assessment of the Optical Spectrum as a Service in Disaggregated Network Scenarios

The potential to operate third-party terminals over multi-domain transparent optical networks attracts operators and customers to implement Optical Spectrum as a Service (OSaaS). As infrastructure information cannot always be shared with OSaaS end customers, alternatives to off-line Quality of Transmission (QoT) estimation tools are required to assess the performance of the spectrum slot in order to estimate achievable throughput. In this paper, commercially available sliceable coherent transceivers are used to assess the Generalized Signal To Noise Ratio (GSNR) based QoT of the OSaaS in a live production network for both, narrow-band and wide-band OSaaS configurations. Extended channel probing based on symbol rate variability is combined with spectral sweeping and operation regime detection to characterize OSaaS implementations on 17 links with different underlying infrastructure configurations in order to maximize capacity and increase service margins in a low-margin operation regime. We achieve 0.05 dB estimation accuracy in GSNR for a wide-band spectrum services and 0.32 dB accuracy for narrow-band spectrum services. Based on the GSNR profile, spectral misalignment, spectral ripple, and operation regime are detected and service margin improvements are demonstrated. Finally, we discuss the network optimization perspective based on acquired data from channel probing and propose use-cases for continuous channel probing in transparent optical networks.

Analysis of WDM-PON for Next-Generation Back- and Fronthaul

An analysis of next-generation infrastructure for mobile back- and fronthaul is presented. The same infrastructure can be used for wireline backhaul and dedicated business access. Possible coexistence with FTTH residential access based on NG-PON2 TWDM is also analyzed. Further, different locations for pools of base-band units in fronthaul scenarios are compared with regard to resulting cost. It turns out that fronthaul with highly concentrated base-band unit pools can be cost-efficient even if fronthaul bit rates reach 10 Gb/s.

Performance Comparison of 112 Gb/s DMT, Nyquist PAM4 and Partial-Response PAM4 for Future 5G Ethernet-based Fronthaul Architecture

For a future 5G Ethernet-based fronthaul architecture, 100G trunk lines of a transmission distance up to 10 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) in combination with cheap grey optics to daisy chain cell site network interfaces are a promising cost- and power-efficient solution. For such a scenario, different intensity modulation and direct detect (IMDD) Formats at a data rate of 112 Gb/s, namely Nyquist four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), discrete multi-tone Transmission (DMT) and partial-response (PR) PAM4 are experimentally investigated, using a low-cost electro-absorption modulated laser (EML), a 25G driver and current state-of-the-art high Speed 84 GS/s CMOS digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) test chips. Each modulation Format is optimized independently for the desired scenario and their digital signal processing (DSP) requirements are investigated. The performance of Nyquist PAM4 and PR PAM4 depend very much on the efficiency of pre- and post-equalization. We show the necessity for at least 11 FFE-taps for pre-emphasis and up to 41 FFE coefficients at the receiver side. In addition, PR PAM4 requires an MLSE with four states to decode the signal back to a PAM4 signal. On the contrary, bit- and power-loading (BL, PL) is crucial for DMT and an FFT length of at least 512 is necessary. With optimized parameters, all Modulation formats result in a very similar performances, demonstrating a transmission distance of up to 10 km over SSMF with bit error rates (BERs) below a FEC threshold of 4.4E-3, allowing error free transmission.
