Geometry of submanifolds with respect to ambient vector fields

Given a Riemannian manifold $N^n$ and ${\cal Z}\in \mathfrak{X}(N)$, an isometric immersion $f\colon M^m\to N^n$ is said to have the \emph{constant ratio property with respect to ${\cal Z}$} either if the tangent component ${\cal Z}^T_f$ of ${\cal Z}$ vanishes identically or if ${\cal Z}^T_f$ vanishes nowhere and the ratio $\|{\cal Z}^\perp_f\|/\|{\cal Z}^T_f\|$ between the lengths of the normal and tangent components of ${\cal Z}$ is constant along $M^m$. It has the \emph{principal direction property with respect to ${\cal Z}$} if ${\cal Z}^T_f$ is an eigenvector of all shape operators of $f$ at all points of $M^m$. In this article we study isometric immersions $f\colon M^m\to N^n$ of arbitrary codimension that have either the constant ratio or the principal direction property with respect to distinguished vector fields ${\cal Z}$ on space forms, product spaces $\Sf^n\times \R$ and $\Hy^n\times \R$, where $\Sf^n$ and $\Hy^n$ are the $n$-dimensional sphere and hyperbolic space, respectively, and, more generally, on warped products $I\times_ρ\Q_\e^n$ of an open interval $I\subset \R$ and a space form $\Q_\e^n$. Starting from the observation that these properties are invariant under conformal changes of the ambient metric, we provide new characterization and classification results of isometric immersions that satisfy either of those properties, or both of them simultaneously, for several relevant instances of ${\cal Z}$ as well as simpler descriptions and proofs of some known ones for particular cases of ${\cal Z}$ previously considered by many authors.

Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex quadric as Gauss maps of hypersurfaces of spheres

The Gauss map of a hypersurface of a unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ is a Lagrangian immersion into the complex quadric $Q^n$ and, conversely, every Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$ is locally the image under the Gauss map of several hypersurfaces of $S^{n+1}(1)$. In this paper, we give explicit constructions for these correspondences and we prove a relation between the principal curvatures of a hypersurface of $S^{n+1}(1)$ and the local angle functions of the corresponding Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$. The existence of such a relation is remarkable since the definition of the angle functions depends on the choice of an almost product structure on $Q^n$ and since several hypersurfaces of $S^{n+1}(1)$, with different principal curvatures, correspond to the same Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$.

Minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric

We introduce a structural approach to study Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric in arbitrary dimension by using its family of non-integrable almost product structures. In particular, we define local angle functions encoding the geometry of the Lagrangian submanifold at hand. We prove that these functions are constant in the special case that the Lagrangian immersion is the Gauss map of an isoparametric hypersurface of a sphere and give the relation with the constant principal curvatures of the hypersurface. We also use our techniques to classify all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric which have constant sectional curvatures and all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds for which all, respectively all but one, local angle functions coincide.

Classification of $δ(2,n-2)$-ideal Lagrangian submanifolds in $n$-dimensional complex space forms

It was proven in [B.-Y. Chen, F. Dillen, J. Van der Veken and L. Vrancken, Curvature inequalities for Lagrangian submanifolds: the final solution, Differ. Geom. Appl. 31 (2013), 808-819] that every Lagrangian submanifold $M$ of a complex space form $\tilde M^{n}(4c)$ of constant holomorphic sectional curvature $4c$ satisfies the following optimal inequality: \begin{align*} δ(2,n-2) \leq \frac{n^2(n-2)}{4(n-1)} H^2 + 2(n-2) c, \end{align*} where $H^2$ is the squared mean curvature and $δ(2,n-2)$ is a $δ$-invariant on $M$. In this paper we classify Lagrangian submanifolds of complex space forms $\tilde M^{n}(4c)$, $n \geq 5$, which satisfy the equality case of this inequality at every point.

Parallel mean curvature surfaces in four-dimensional homogeneous spaces

We survey different classification results for surfaces with parallel mean curvature immersed into some Riemannian homogeneous four-manifolds, including real and complex space forms, and product spaces. We provide a common framework for this problem, with special attention to the existence of holomorphic quadratic differentials on such surfaces. The case of spheres with parallel mean curvature is also explained in detail, as well as the state-of-the-art advances in the general problem.

Lagrangian Submanifolds with Constant Angle Functions of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$

We study Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$ with respect to their, so called, angle functions. We show that if all angle functions are constant, then the submanifold is either totally geodesic or has constant sectional curvature and there is a classification theorem that follows from a recent paper of B. Dioos, L. Vrancken and X. Wang (arXiv:1604.05060). Moreover, we show that if precisely one angle function is constant, then it must be equal to $0,\fracπ{3}$ or $\frac{2π}{3}$. Using then two remarkable constructions together with the classification of Lagrangian submanifolds of which the first component has nowhere maximal rank, we obtain a classification of such Lagrangian submanifolds.

Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^3$ from minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$

We study non-totally geodesic Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^3$ for which the projection on the first component is nowhere of maximal rank. We show that this property can be expressed in terms of the so called angle functions and that such Lagrangian submanifolds are closely related to minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$. Indeed, starting from an arbitrary minimal surface, we can construct locally a large family of such Lagrangian immersions, including one exceptional example.

Surfaces in a pseudo-sphere with harmonic or 1-type pseudo-spherical Gauss map

We give a complete classification of Riemannian and Lorentzian surfaces of arbitrary codimension in a pseudo-sphere whose pseudo-spherical Gauss maps are of 1-type or, in particular, harmonic. In some cases a concrete global classification is obtained, while in other cases the solutions are described by an explicit system of partial differential equations.

Umbilical properties of spacelike co-dimension two submanifolds

For Riemannian submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold, we introduce the concepts of \emph{total shear tensor} and \emph{shear operators} as the trace-free part of the corresponding second fundamental form and shape operators. The relationship between these quantities and the umbilical properties of the submanifold is shown. Several novel notions of umbilical submanifolds are then considered along with the classical concepts of totally umbilical and pseudo-umbilical submanifolds. Then we focus on the case of co-dimension $2$, and we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the submanifold to be umbilical with respect to a normal direction. Moreover, we prove that the umbilical direction, if it exists, is unique ---unless the submanifold is totally umbilical--- and we give a formula to compute it explicitly. When the ambient manifold is Lorentzian we also provide a way of determining its causal character. We end the paper by illustrating our results on the Lorentzian geometry of the Kerr black hole.

On holomorphic Riemannian geometry and submanifolds of Wick-related spaces

In this article we show how holomorphic Riemannian geometry can be used to relate certain submanifolds in one pseudo-Riemannian space to submanifolds with corresponding geometric properties in other spaces. In order to do so, we shall first rephrase and extend some background theory on holomorphic Riemannian manifolds, which is essential for the later application of the presented method.

Sequences of harmonic maps in the 3-sphere

We define two transforms between non-conformal harmonic maps from a surface into the 3-sphere. With these transforms one can construct, from one such harmonic map, a sequence of harmonic maps. We show that there is a correspondence between non-conformal harmonic maps into the 3-sphere, $H$-surfaces in Euclidean 3-space and almost complex surfaces in the nearly Kähler manifold $S^3\times S^3$. As a consequence we can construct sequences of $H$-surfaces and almost complex surfaces.

Lagrangian submanifolds with prescribed second fundamental form

We classify Lagrangian submanifolds of complex space forms, whose second fundamental form can be written in a certain way, depending on a real parameter. For some special values of this parameter, the resulting submanifolds are ideal in the sense that they realize equality in an inequality for a Chen's delta-curvature.

Curvature inequalities for Lagrangian submanifolds: the final solution

Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional Lagrangian submanifold of a complex space form. We prove a pointwise inequality $$δ(n_1,\ldots,n_k) \leq a(n,k,n_1,\ldots,n_k) \|H\|^2 + b(n,k,n_1,\ldots,n_k)c,$$ with on the left hand side any delta-invariant of the Riemannian manifold $M$ and on the right hand side a linear combination of the squared mean curvature of the immersion and the constant holomorphic sectional curvature of the ambient space. The coefficients on the right hand side are optimal in the sence that there exist non-minimal examples satisfying equality at at least one point. We also characterize those Lagrangian submanifolds satisfying equality at any of their points. Our results correct and extend those given in [B.-Y. Chen and F. Dillen, Optimal general inequalities for Lagrangian submanifolds in complex space forms, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 379 (2011), 229--239].

Gauss maps of constant mean curvature surfaces in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces

It is well-known that for a surface in a 3-dimensional real space form the constancy of the mean curvature is equivalent to the harmonicity of the Gauss map. However, this is not true in general for surfaces in an arbitrary 3-dimensional ambient space. In this paper we study this problem for surfaces in an important and very natural family of 3-dimensional ambient spaces, namely homogeneous spaces. In particular, we obtain a full classification of constant mean curvature surfaces, whose Gauss map satisfies the more mild condition of vertical harmonicity, in all 3-dimensional homogeneous spaces.

Totally umbilical hypersurfaces of manifolds admitting a unit Killing field

We prove that a Riemannian product of type M x R (where R denotes the Euclidean line) admits totally umbilical hypersurfaces if and only if M has locally the structure of a warped product and we give a complete description of the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in this case. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which a Riemannian three-manifold carrying a unit Killing field admits totally geodesic surfaces and we study local and global properties of three-manifolds satisfying this condition.

Constant Angle Surfaces in a warped product

Let $I \subseteq \R$ be an open interval, $f : I \to \R$ a strictly positive function and denote by $\E^2$ the Euclidean plane. We classify all surfaces in the warped product manifold $I \times_f \E^2$ for which the unit normal makes a constant angle with the direction tangent to $I$.

Constant angle surfaces in the Heisenberg group

In this article we generalize the notion of constant angle surfaces in S^2 x R and H^2 x R to general Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu spaces, i.e. essentially to three-dimensional homogeneous spaces with a four-dimensional isometry group. We show that these surfaces have constant Gaussian curvature and we give a complete local classification in the Heisenberg group.
