Simplicity of partial skew group rings and maximal commutativity

Let R0 be a commutative associative ring (not necessarily unital), G a group and alpha a partial action by ideals that contain local units. We show that R0 is maximal commutative in the partial skew group ring R0*G if and only if R0 has the ideal intersection property in R0*G. From this we derive a criterion for simplicity of R0*G in terms of maximal commutativity and $G-$simplicity of R0 and apply this to two examples, namely to partial actions by clopen subsets of a compact set and to give a new proof of the simplicity criterion for Leavitt path algebras. A new proof of the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for Leavitt path algebras is also provided.

Maximal commutative subrings and simplicity of Ore extensions

The aim of this article is to describe necessary and sufficient conditions for simplicity of Ore extension rings, with an emphasis on differential polynomial rings. We show that a differential polynomial ring, R[x;id,δ], is simple if and only if its center is a field and R is δ-simple. When R is commutative we note that the centralizer of R in R[x;σ,δ] is a maximal commutative subring containing R and, in the case when σ=id, we show that it intersects every non-zero ideal of R[x;id,δ] non-trivially. Using this we show that if R is δ-simple and maximal commutative in R[x;id,δ], then R[x;id,δ] is simple. We also show that under some conditions on R the converse holds.

Simple Skew Category Algebras Associated with Minimal Partially Defined Dynamical Systems

In this article, we continue our study of category dynamical systems, that is functors $s$ from a category $G$ to $\Top^{\op}$, and their corresponding skew category algebras. Suppose that the spaces $s(e)$, for $e \in \ob(G)$, are compact Hausdorff. We show that if (i) the skew category algebra is simple, then (ii) $G$ is inverse connected, (iii) $s$ is minimal and (iv) $s$ is faithful. We also show that if $G$ is a locally abelian groupoid, then (i) is equivalent to (ii), (iii) and (iv). Thereby, we generalize results by Öinert for skew group algebras to a large class of skew category algebras.

Simplicity of skew group rings of abelian groups

Given a group G, a (unital) ring A and a group homomorphism $σ: G \to \Aut(A)$, one can construct the skew group ring $A \rtimes_σ G$. We show that a skew group ring $A \rtimes_σ G$, of an abelian group G, is simple if and only if its centre is a field and A is G-simple. If G is abelian and A is commutative, then $A \rtimes_σ G$ is shown to be simple if and only if σis injective and A is G-simple. As an application we show that a transformation group (X,G), where X is a compact Hausdorff space and G is abelian, is minimal and faithful if and only if its associated skew group algebra $C(X) \rtimes_σ G$ is simple. We also provide an example of a skew group algebra, of an (non-abelian) ICC group, for which the above conclusions fail to hold.

Skew Category Algebras Associated with Partially Defined Dynamical Systems

We introduce partially defined dynamical systems defined on a topological space. To each such system we associate a functor $s$ from a category $G$ to $\Top^{\op}$ and show that it defines what we call a skew category algebra $A \rtimes^σ G$. We study the connection between topological freeness of $s$ and, on the one hand, ideal properties of $A \rtimes^σ G$ and, on the other hand, maximal commutativity of $A$ in $A \rtimes^σ G$. In particular, we show that if $G$ is a groupoid and for each $e \in \ob(G)$ the group of all morphisms $e \rightarrow e$ is countable and the topological space $s(e)$ is Tychonoff and Baire, then the following assertions are equivalent: (i) $s$ is topologically free; (ii) $A$ has the ideal intersection property, that is if $I$ is a nonzero ideal of $A \rtimes^σ G$, then $I \cap A \neq \{0\}$; (iii) the ring $A$ is a maximal abelian complex subalgebra of $A \rtimes^σ G$. Thereby, we generalize a result by Svensson, Silvestrov and de Jeu from the additive group of integers to a large class of groupoids.

Simplicity and maximal commutative subalgebras of twisted generalized Weyl algebras

In this paper we show that each non-zero ideal of a twisted generalized Weyl algebra (TGWA) $A$ intersects the centralizer of the distinguished subalgebra $R$ in $A$ non-trivially. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the centralizer of $R$ in $A$ to be commutative, and give examples of TGWAs associated to symmetric Cartan matrices satisfying this condition. By imposing a certain finiteness condition on $R$ (weaker than Noetherianity) we are able to make an Ore localization which turns out to be useful when investigating simplicity of the TGWA. Under this mild assumption we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the simplicity of TGWAs. We describe how this is related to maximal commutativity of $R$ in $A$ and the (non-) existence of non-trivial $\Z^n$-invariant ideals of $R$. Our result is a generalization of the rank one case, obtained by D. A. Jordan in 1993. We illustrate our theorems by considering some special classes of TGWAs and providing concrete examples.

Miyashita Action in Strongly Groupoid Graded Rings

We determine the commutant of homogeneous subrings in strongly groupoid graded rings in terms of an action on the ring induced by the grading. Thereby we generalize a classical result of Miyashita from the group graded case to the groupoid graded situation. In the end of the article we exemplify this result. To this end, we show, by an explicit construction, that given a finite groupoid $G$, equipped with a nonidentity morphism $t : d(t) \to c(t)$, there is a strongly $G$-graded ring $R$ with the properties that each $R_s$, for $s \in G$, is nonzero and $R_t$ is a nonfree left $R_{c(t)}$-module.

The Ideal Intersection Property for Groupoid Graded Rings

We show that if a groupoid graded ring has a certain nonzero ideal property, then the commutant of the center of the principal component of the ring has the ideal intersection property, that is it intersects nontrivially every nonzero ideal of the ring. Furthermore, we show that for skew groupoid algebras with commutative principal component, the principal component is maximal commutative if and only if it has the ideal intersection property.

Noncrossed Product Matrix Subrings and Ideals of Graded Rings

We show that if a groupoid graded ring has a certain nonzero ideal property and the principal component of the ring is commutative, then the intersection of a nonzero twosided ideal of the ring with the commutant of the principal component of the ring is nonzero. Furthermore, we show that for a skew groupoid ring with commutative principal component, the principal component is maximal commutative if and only if it is intersected nontrivially by each nonzero ideal of the skew groupoid ring. We also determine the center of strongly groupoid graded rings in terms of an action on the ring induced by the grading. In the end of the article, we show that, given a finite groupoid $G$, which has a nonidentity morphism, there is a ring, strongly graded by $G$, which is not a crossed product over $G$.

Simple group graded rings and maximal commutativity

In this paper we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for strongly group graded rings to be simple. For a strongly group graded ring $R = \bigoplus_{g\in G} R_g$ the grading group $G$ acts, in a natural way, as automorphisms of the commutant of the neutral component subring $R_e$ in $R$ and of the center of $R_e$. We show that if $R$ is a strongly $G$-graded ring where $R_e$ is maximal commutative in $R$, then $R$ is a simple ring if and only if $R_e$ is $G$-simple (i.e. there are no nontrivial $G$-invariant ideals). We also show that if $R_e$ is commutative (not necessarily maximal commutative) and the commutant of $R_e$ is $G$-simple, then $R$ is a simple ring. These results apply to $G$-crossed products in particular. A skew group ring $R_e \rtimes_σ G$, where $R_e$ is commutative, is shown to be a simple ring if and only if $R_e$ is $G$-simple and maximal commutative in $R_e \rtimes_σ G$. As an interesting example we consider the skew group algebra $C(X) \rtimes_{\tilde{h}} \mathbb{Z}$ associated to a topological dynamical system $(X,h)$. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for simplicity of $C(X) \rtimes_{\tilde{h}} \mathbb{Z}$ with respect to the dynamics of the dynamical system $(X,h)$, but also with respect to algebraic properties of $C(X) \rtimes_{\tilde{h}} \mathbb{Z}$. Furthermore, we show that for any strongly $G$-graded ring $R$ each nonzero ideal of $R$ has a nonzero intersection with the commutant of the center of the neutral component.

Commutativity and Ideals in Category Crossed Products

In order to simultaneously generalize matrix rings and group graded crossed products, we introduce category crossed products. For such algebras we describe the center and the commutant of the coefficient ring. We also investigate the connection between on the one hand maximal commutativity of the coefficient ring and on the other hand nonemptyness of intersections of the coefficient ring by nonzero twosided ideals.
