Nucleon form factors and final state radiative corrections to $e^+e^-\to \bar p p γ$

New parametrisation for the electric and the magnetic form factors of proton and neutron are presented. The proton form factors describe well the recent measurements by BaBar collaboration and earlier ones of the ratio of the form factors in space-like region. The neutron form factors are consistent with earlier measurements of neutron pair production and ratio of the form factors in the space-like region. These form factors are implemented into the generator PHOKHARA, which simulates the reactions $e^+e^-\to \bar p p γ$ and $e^+e^-\to \bar n nγ$. The influence of final state radiation is investigated.

Vector-boson pair production at the LHC: Electroweak corrections in HERWIG++

Vector-boson pair production is of great phenomenological importance at the LHC. These processes will help to validate the Standard Model at highest energies, and they may also open the door for the discovery of new physics potentially showing up in subtle modifications of the non-abelian structure of weak interactions. In this letter, we review the status of the corresponding theory predictions, focusing on the higher-order electroweak corrections. We present a NLO analysis of electroweak corrections to W-pair, W$^+$Z and Z-pair production at the LHC, including all mass effects as well as leptonic decays. Contributions of photon-induced processes and massive-boson radiation are also discussed. The electroweak corrections are implemented in the HERWIG++ Monte Carlo generator, where they are combined with QCD corrections. We also propose a simple and straight-forward method allowing for an \emph{a posteriori} implementation of electroweak corrections to vector-boson pair production in any Monte Carlo event sample.

Electroweak accuracy in V-pair production at the LHC

Vector-boson pair production is of great phenomenological importance at the LHC. These processes will help to validate the Standard Model at highest energies, and they may also open the door for the discovery of new physics potentially showing up in subtle modifications of the non-abelian structure of weak interactions. In this letter, we present the first full $\mathcal{O}(α^3)$ analysis of on-shell W$^\pm$Z and Z-pair production at the LHC with all mass effects consistently included. The resulting electroweak corrections are negative, strongly increase with increasing transverse momenta, and lead to significant modifications of rapidity and angular distributions. In view of the high energies accessible at the LHC, combined with considerable event rates, our results have to be included in a proper analysis of experimental data.

Gluino-Squark Production at the LHC: The Threshold

An analysis of the cross section for hadronic production of gluino-squark pairs close to threshold is presented. Within the framework of non-relativistic QCD a significant enhancement compared to fixed order perturbation theory is observed which originates from the characteristic remnants of the gluino-squark resonances below the nominal pair threshold. The analysis includes all colour configurations of S-wave gluino-squark pairs, i.e. triplet, sextet and 15 representation. Matching coefficients at leading order are separately evaluated for all colour configurations. The dominant QCD corrections, arising from initial- and final-state radiation are included. The non-relativistic dynamics of the gluino pair is solved by calculating the Green's function in Next-to-Leading Order (NLO). The results are applied to benchmark scenarios, based on Snowmass Points and Slopes (SPS). As a consequence of the large decay rate of at least one of the constituents squark or gluino annihilation decays of the bound state (\tilde{g}\tilde{q})\rightarrow gq, qγ, qZ or q'W^{\pm} are irrelevant. Thus the signatures of gluino-quark production below and above the nominal threshold are identical. Numerical results for the cross section at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at \sqrt{s}=7 TeV and 14 TeV are presented. The enhancement of the total cross section through final state interaction amounts to roughly 3%.

Charge asymmetries of top quarks at hadron colliders revisited

A sizeable difference in the differential production cross section of top- compared to antitop-quark production, denoted charge asymmetry, has been observed at the Tevatron. The experimental results seem to exceed the theory predictions based on the Standard Model by a significant amount and have triggered a large number of suggestions for "new physics". In the present paper the Standard Model predictions for Tevatron and LHC experiments are revisited. This includes a reanalysis of electromagnetic as well as weak corrections, leading to a shift of the asymmetry by roughly a factor 1.1 when compared to the results of the first papers on this subject. The impact of cuts on the transverse momentum of the top-antitop system is studied. Restricting the ttbar system to a transverse momentum less than 20 GeV leads to an enhancement of the asymmetries by factors between 1.3 and 1.5, indicating the importance of an improved understanding of the $t\bar t$-momentum distribution. Predictions for similar measurements at the LHC are presented, demonstrating the sensitivity of the large rapidity region both to the Standard Model contribution and effects from "new physics".

Gluino Pair Production at the LHC: The Threshold

The next-to-leading order analysis of the cross section of hadronic gluino pair production close to threshold is presented. Within the framework of non-relativistic QCD a significant enhancement compared to fixed order perturbation theory is observed which originates from the characteristic remnant of the 1S peak below the nominal pair threshold. This enhancement is similar to the corresponding one for top production. However, as a consequence of the larger colour factor of the QCD potential the effect is significantly enhanced. The analysis includes all colour configurations of S-wave gluino pairs, i.e. singlet, symmetric and antisymmetric octet, decuplet and twenty-seven representation. Matching coefficients involving real and virtual radiation are separately evaluated for all colour and spin configurations and initial states. We concentrate on the case of gluino decay rates comparable to the gluino binding energy. The non-relativistic dynamics of the gluino pair is solved by calculating the Green's function in NLO. Numerical results for the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt(s)=14 TeV and 7 TeV are presented for various characteristic scenarios.

Narrow resonances studies with the radiative return method

Using the radiative return method, experiments at high luminosity electron-positron colliders allow to explore the kaon and the pion form factors in the time-like region up to fairly high energies. This opens the possibility to study kaon and pion pair production at and around the narrow resonances J/psi and psi(2S) and explore the interference between electromagnetic and hadronic amplitudes. Parameterizations of charged and neutral kaon as well as pion form factors are derived, which lead to an improved description of the data in the region of large invariant masses of the meson pair. These form factors are combined with the hadronic couplings of charged and neutral kaons to J/psi and psi(2S) and implemented into the Monte Carlo generator PHOKHARA, which is now, for the first time, able to simulate the production of narrow resonances and their decay into kaon, pion and muon pairs.

Precise Charm- and Bottom-Quark Masses: Recent Updates

Recent theoretical and experimental improvements in the determination of charm and bottom quark masses are discussed. The final results, $m_c(3 \text{GeV})=986(13) $MeV and $m_b(m_b)=4163(16) $MeV represent, together with a closely related lattice determination $m_c(3 {\rm GeV})=986(10) $MeV, the presently most precise determinations of these two fundamental Standard Model parameters. A critical analysis of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties is presented.

Gluinonia: Energy Levels, Production and Decay

Predictions for energy levels, production and decay rate of gluinonia, non-relativistic boundstates of gluinos, are presented. The potential between color-octet constituents is derived in next-to-next-to leading order and one-loop QCD corrections are derived for the production cross section and the decay rate into gluon jets. In addition we evaluate the decay rate into top quarks and into two photons. The signal-to-background ratio is estimated for the dominant decay mode and found to be around 0.5%. For relatively light gluinos the bound states thus might be detectable.

Strong and Electromagnetic J/psi and psi(2S) Decays into Pion and Kaon Pairs

A combined analysis of the electromagnetic pion and kaon form factors in the neighborhood of J/psi and psi(2S) and of the strong decay amplitude of these resonances into kaons is presented. In the presence of a large relative phase between strong and electromagnetic resonance amplitudes the branching ratio, as measured in electron-positron annihilation, receives an additional contribution from the interference between resonance and continuum amplitude neglected in earlier papers. Our study is model independent and does not rely on the SU(3) symmetry assumptions used in earlier papers. We note that the large relative phase between strong and electromagnetic amplitudes observed in earlier analyses is model dependent and relies critically on the specific assumptions on SU(3) symmetry and breaking.

Four-pion production in tau decays and e+e- annihilation: an update

An improved description of four-pion production in electron-positron annihilation and in tau lepton decays is presented. The model amplitude is fitted to recent data from BaBar which cover a wide energy range and which were obtained exploiting the radiative return. Predicting tau decay distributions from e+e- data and comparing these predictions with ALEPH and CLEO results, the validity of isospin symmetry is confirmed within the present experimental errors. A good description of two- and three-pion sub-distributions is obtained. Special emphasis is put on the predictions for omega pi (-> pi+pi-pi0) in e+e- annihilation and in tau decay. The model amplitude is implemented in the Monte Carlo generator PHOKHARA.

Electroweak corrections to hadronic production of W bosons at large transverse momenta

To match the precision of present and future measurements of W-boson production at hadron colliders electroweak radiative corrections must be included in the theory predictions. In this paper we consider their effect on the transverse momentum (p_T) distribution of W bosons, with emphasis on large p_T. We evaluate the full electroweak O(alpha) corrections to the processes pp -> W+jet and p\bar p -> W+jet including virtual and real photonic contributions. We present the explicit expressions in analytical form for the virtual corrections and provide results for the real corrections, discussing in detail the treatment of soft and collinear singularities. We also provide compact approximate expressions which are valid in the high-energy region, where the electroweak corrections are strongly enhanced by logarithms of \hat{s}/M_W^2. These expressions describe the complete asymptotic behaviour at one loop as well as the leading and next-to-leading logarithms at two loops. Numerical results are presented for proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV and proton-antiproton collisions at 2 TeV. The corrections are negative and their size increases with p_T. At the LHC, where transverse momenta of 2 TeV or more can be reached, the one- and two-loop corrections amount up to -40% and +10%, respectively, and will be important for a precise analysis of W production. At the Tevatron, transverse momenta up to 300 GeV are within reach. In this case the electroweak corrections amount up to -10% and are thus larger than the expected statistical error.

Top Quarks, Axigluons and Charge Asymmetries at Hadron Colliders

Axigluons are colored heavy neutral gauge boson that couple to quarks through an axial vector current and the same strong coupling as gluons. The most important model-independent manifestation of axigluons is the generation of a forward--backward asymmetry in top-antitop quark production at $p\bar{p}$ collisions which originates from the charge asymmetry. We update our previous analysis for the inclusive QCD induced forward--backward asymmetry and define a new observable which is more sensitive to the effect than the forward--backward asymmetry. Furthermore, we find a lower limit of 1.2 TeV at 90% C.L. on the axigluon mass from recent measurements of the asymmetry at Tevatron. Also at LHC, the charge asymmetry is sizable in suitably selected samples. We evaluate this asymmetry in the central region for different selection cuts and show that, like at Tevatron, the charge asymmetry can probe larger values of the axigluon mass than the dijet mass distribution.

Determination of the strong coupling constant from the CLEO measurement of the total hadronic cross section in $e^+e^-$ annihilation below 10.56 GeV

Using recent CLEO III results for the cross section for $e^+e^- \to {\rm hadrons}$ at seven centre-of-mass energies between 6.964 and 10.538 GeV, we derive a value for the strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z^2)=0.110_{-0.012}^{-0.010}{}_{-0.011}^{+0.010}$ where the uncertainties are uncorrelated and correlated, respectively. Our result differs significantly from the one derived by CLEO III, as a consequence of inclusion of quark mass effects and the proper matching between the effective theories with four and five flavours. Combining this new result with an analysis based on earlier cross section measurements in the energy region between 2 and 10.6 GeV, we obtain $α_s(M_Z^2)=0.119^{+0.009}_{-0.011}$, well consistent with the current world average.

Precise Charm and Bottom quark masses

New data for the total cross section sigma(e^+e^- --> hadrons) in the charm and bottom threshold region are combined with an improved theoretical analysis, which includes recent four-loop calculations, to determine the short distance \bar{MS} charm and bottom quark masses. The final result for the \bar{MS}-masses, m_c(3 GeV)=0.986(13) GeV and m_b(10 GeV)=3.609(25) GeV is consistent with but significantly more precise than a similar previous study.

Electroweak corrections to large transverse momentum production of W bosons at the LHC

The corrections are negative and their size increases with p_T. At the LHC, where transverse momenta of 2 TeV or more can be reached, the one- and two-loop corrections amount up to -40% and +10%, respectively.

Spin asymmetries and correlations in lambda-pair production through the radiative return method

Exclusive baryon pair production through the radiative return is a unique tool to determine the electric and the magnetic form factors in the timelike region over a wide range of energies. The decay of lambda-baryons into p + pi- can be used to measure their spin and to analyze spin-spin correlations in the antilambda-lambda system. We evaluate the spin dependent hadronic tensor, which describes this reaction, calculate the corresponding cross section for e+e- -> antilambda lambda and e+e- -> antilambda lambda gamma with subsequent decays of lambda and antilambda and present a compact formula for the correlated distribution. We demonstrate that the relative phase between the electric and the magnetic form factor can be determined in this analysis by considering single spin asymmetries and correlated decay distributions. The reaction is implemented in the event generator PHOKHARA. It is demonstrated that the relative phase can be measured with the event sample presently accumulated at B-factories.
