On the emergence of an almost-commutative spectral triple from a geometric construction on a configuration space

We show that the structure of an almost-commutative spectral triple emerges in a semi-classical limit from a geometric construction on a configuration space of gauge connections. The geometric construction resembles that of a spectral triple with a Dirac operator on the configuration space that interacts with the so-called $\mathbf{HD}$-algebra, which is an algebra of operator-valued functions on the configuration space, and which is generated by parallel-transports along flows of vector-fields on the underlying manifold. In a semi-classical limit the $\mathbf{HD}$-algebra produces an almost-commutative algebra where the finite factor depends on the representation of the $\mathbf{HD}$-algebra and on the point in the configuration space over which the semi-classical state is localized. Interestingly, we find that the Hilbert space, in which the almost-commutative algebra acts, comes with a double fermionic structure that resembles the fermionic doubling found in the noncommutative formulation of the standard model. Finally, the emerging almost-commutative algebra interacts with a spatial Dirac operator that emerges in the semi-classical limit. This interaction involves both factors of the almost-commutative algebra.

A Yang-Mills-Dirac Quantum Field Theory Emerging From a Dirac Operator on a Configuration Space

Starting with a Dirac operator on a configuration space of $SU(2)$ gauge connections we consider its fluctuations with inner automorphisms. We show that a certain type of twisted inner fluctuations leads to a Dirac operator whose square gives the Hamiltonian of Yang-Mills quantum field theory coupled to a fermionic sector that consist of one-form fermions. We then show that if a metric exists on the underlying three-dimensional manifold then there exists a change of basis of the configuration space for which the transformed fermionic sector consists of fermions that are no-longer one-forms.

Dirac Operators on Configuration Spaces and Yang-Mills Quantum Field Theory

In this paper we discuss a connection between Dirac operators on configuration spaces and Yang-Mills quantum field theory. We first show that the Hamilton operators of the self-dual and anti-self-dual sectors of a Yang-Mills quantum field theory emerge from unitary transformations of a Dirac equation formulated on a configuration space of gauge connections. Secondly, we formulate a Bott-Dirac operator on the configuration space and demonstrate how the Hamilton operator of a Yang-Mills quantum field theory coupled to a fermionic sector emerges from its square. Finally, we discuss a spectral invariant that emerges in this framework.

Dirac Operators on Configuration Spaces: Fermions with Half-integer Spin, Real Structure, and Yang-Mills Quantum Field Theory

In this paper we continue the development of a spectral triple-like construction on a configuration space of gauge connections. We have previously shown that key elements of bosonic and fermionic quantum field theory emerge from such a geometrical framework. In this paper we solve a central problem concerning the inclusion of fermions with half-integer spin into this framework. We map the tangent space of the configuration space into a similar space based on spinors and use this map to construct a Dirac operator on the configuration space. We also construct a real structure acting in a Hilbert space over the configuration space. Finally, we show that the self-dual and anti-self-dual sectors of the Hamiltonian of a non-perturbative quantum Yang-Mills theory emerge from a unitary transformation of a Dirac equation on a configuration space of gauge fields. The dual and anti-dual sectors emerge in a two-by-two matrix structure.

Constructing spectral triples over holonomy-diffeomorphisms and the problem of reconciling general relativity with quantum field theory

In this paper we construct a candidate for a spectral triple on a quotient space of gauge connections modulo gauge transformations and show that it is related to a Kasparov type bi-module over two canonical algebras: the HD-algebra, which is a non-commutative C*-algebra generated by parallel transports along flows of vector fields, and an exterior algebra on a space of gauge transformations. The latter algebra is related to the ghost sector in a BRST quantisation scheme. Previously we have shown that key elements of bosonic and fermionic quantum field theory on a curved background emerge from a spectral triple of this type. In this paper we show that a dynamical metric on the underlying manifold also emerges from the construction. We first rigorously construct a Dirac type operator on the a quotient space of gauge connections modulo gauge transformations, and discuss the commutator between this Dirac type operator and the HD-algebra. To do this we first construct a gauge-covariant metric on the configuration space and use it to construct the triple. The key step in this construction is to require the volume of the quotient space to be finite, which amounts to an ultra-violet regularisation. Since the metric on the configuration space is dynamical with respect to the time-evolution generated by the Dirac type operator in the triple, it is possible to interpret the regularisation as a physical feature (as opposed to static regularisations, which are always computational artefacts). Finally, we construct a Bott-Dirac operator that connects our construction with quantum Yang-Mills theory.

Non-perturbative Quantum Field Theory and the Geometry of Functional Spaces

In this paper we construct a non-commutative geometry over a configuration space of gauge connections and show that it gives rise to a candidate for an interacting, non-perturbative quantum gauge theory coupled to a fermionic field on a curved background. The non-commutative geometry is given by an infinite-dimensional Bott-Dirac type operator, whose square gives the Hamilton operator, and which interacts with an algebra generated by holonomy-diffeomorphisms. The Bott-Dirac operator and the associated Hilbert space relies on a metric on the configuration space of connections, which effectively works as a covariant ultra-violet regulator. We show that the construction coincides with perturbative quantum field theory in a local limit. Questions concerning Lorentz invariance and the fermionic sector as well as the issue of existence are left open.

The Metric Nature of Matter

We construct a metric structure on a configuration space of gauge connections and show that it naturally produces a candidate for a non-perturbative, 3+1 dimensional Yang-Mills-Dirac quantum field theory on a curved background. The metric structure is an infinite-dimensional Bott-Dirac operator and the fermionic sector of the emerging quantum field theory is generated by the infinite-dimensional Clifford algebra required to construct this operator. The Bott-Dirac operator interacts with the $\mathbf{HD}(M)$ algebra, which is a non-commutative algebra generated by holonomy-diffeomorphisms on the underlying manifold, i.e. parallel-transforms along flows of vector fields. This algebra combined with the Bott-Dirac operator encode the canonical commutation and anti-commutation relations of the quantised bosonic and fermionic fields. The square of the Bott-Dirac operator produces both the Yang-Mills Hamilton operator and the Dirac Hamilton operator as well as a topological Yang-Mills term alongside higher-derivative terms and a metric invariant.

Representations of the Quantum Holonomy-Diffeomorphism Algebra

In this paper we continue the development of Quantum Holonomy Theory, which is a candidate for a fundamental theory, by constructing separable strongly continuous representations of its algebraic foundation, the quantum holonomy-diffeomorphism algebra. Since the quantum holonomy-diffeomorphism algebra encodes the canonical commutation relations of a gauge theory these representations provide a possible framework for the kinematical sector of a quantum gauge theory. Furthermore, we device a method of constructing physically interesting operators such as the Yang-Mills Hamilton operator. This establishes the existence of a general non-perturbative framework of quantum gauge theories on a curved backgrounds. Questions concerning gauge-invariance are left open.

On the Fermionic Sector of Quantum Holonomy Theory

In this paper we continue the development of quantum holonomy theory, which is a candidate for a fundamental theory based on gauge fields and non-commutative geometry. The theory is build around the QHD(M) algebra, which is generated by parallel transports along flows of vector fields and translation operators on an underlying configuration space of connections, and involves a semi-final spectral triple with an infinite-dimensional Bott-Dirac operator. Previously we have proven that the square of the Bott-Dirac operator gives the free Hamilton operator of a Yang-Mills theory coupled to a fermionic sector in a flat and local limit. In this paper we show that the Hilbert space representation, that forms the backbone in this construction, can be extended to include many-particle states.

Quantum Gravity and the Emergence of Matter

In this paper we establish the existence of the non-perturbative theory of quantum gravity known as quantum holonomy theory by showing that a Hilbert space representation of the QHD(M) algebra, which is an algebra generated by holonomy-diffeomorphisms and by translation operators on an underlying configuration space of Ashtekar connections, exist. We construct operators, which correspond to the Hamiltonian of general relativity and the Dirac Hamiltonian, and show that they give rise to their classical counterparts in a classical limit. We also find that the structure of an almost-commutative spectral triple emerge in the same limit. The Hilbert space representation, that we find, is inherently non-local, which appears to rule out spacial singularities such as the big bang and black hole singularities. Finally, the framework also permits an interpretation in terms of non-perturbative Yang-Mills theory as well as other non-perturbative quantum field theories. This paper is the first of two, where the second paper contains mathematical details and proofs.

Nonperturbative Quantum Field Theory and Noncommutative Geometry

A general framework of non-perturbative quantum field theory on a curved background is presented. A quantum field theory is in this setting characterised by an embedding of a space of field configurations into a Hilbert space over $\mathbb{R}^\infty$. This embedding, which is only local up to a scale that we interpret as the Planck scale, coincides in the local and flat limit with the plane wave expansion known from canonical quantisation. We identify a universal Bott-Dirac operator acting in the Hilbert space over $\mathbb{R}^\infty$ and show that it gives rise to the free Hamiltonian both in the case of a scalar field theory and in the case of a Yang-Mills theory. These theories come with a canonical fermionic sector for which the Bott-Dirac operator also provides the Hamiltonian. We prove that these quantum field theories exist non-perturbatively for an interacting real scalar theory and for a general Yang-Mills theory, both with or without the fermionic sectors, and show that the free theories are given by semi-finite spectral triples over the respective configuration spaces. Finally, we propose a class of quantum field theories whose interactions are generated by inner fluctuations of the Bott-Dirac operator.

Quantum Holonomy Theory and Hilbert Space Representations

We present a new formulation of quantum holonomy theory, which is a candidate for a non-perturbative and background independent theory of quantum gravity coupled to matter and gauge degrees of freedom. The new formulation is based on a Hilbert space representation of the QHD(M) algebra, which is generated by holonomy-diffeomorphisms on a 3-dimensional manifold and by canonical translation operators on the underlying configuration space over which the holonomy-diffeomorphisms form a non-commutative C*-algebra. A proof that the state that generates the representation exist is left for later publications.

On a Lattice-Independent Formulation of Quantum Holonomy Theory

Quantum holonomy theory is a candidate for a non-perturbative theory of quantum gravity coupled to fermions. The theory is based on the QHD(M) algebra, which essentially encodes how matter degrees of freedom are moved on a three-dimensional manifold. In this paper we commence the development of a lattice-independent formulation. We first introduce a flow-dependent version of the QHD(M) algebra and formulate necessary conditions for a state to exist hereon. We then use the GNS construction to build a kinematical Hilbert space. Finally we find that operators, that correspond to the Dirac and gravitational Hamiltonians in a semi-classical limit, are background independent.

The Quantum Holonomy-Diffeomorphism Algebra & Quantum Gravity

We introduce the Quantum Holonomy-Diffeomorphism *-algebra, which is generated by holonomy-diffeomorphisms on a 3-dimensional manifold and translations on a space of SU(2)-connections. We show that this algebra encodes the canonical commutation relations of canonical quantum gravity formulated in terms of Ashtekar variables. Furthermore, we show that semi-classical states exist on the holonomy-diffeomorphism part of the algebra but that these states cannot be extended to the full algebra. Via a Dirac type operator we derive a certain class of unbounded operators that act in the GNS construction of the semi-classical states. These unbounded operators are the type of operators, which we have previously shown to entail the spatial 3-dimensional Dirac operator and Dirac Hamiltonian in a semi-classical limit. Finally, we show that the structure of the Hamilton constraint emerges from a Yang-Mills type operator over the space of SU(2)-connections.

Quantum Holonomy Theory

We present quantum holonomy theory, which is a non-perturbative theory of quantum gravity coupled to fermionic degrees of freedom. The theory is based on a C*-algebra that involves holonomy-diffeomorphisms on a 3-dimensional manifold and which encodes the canonical commutation relations of canonical quantum gravity formulated in terms of Ashtekar variables. Employing a Dirac type operator on the configuration space of Ashtekar connections we obtain a semi-classical state and a kinematical Hilbert space via its GNS construction. We use the Dirac type operator, which provides a metric structure over the space of Ashtekar connections, to define a scalar curvature operator, from which we obtain a candidate for a Hamilton operator. We show that the classical Hamilton constraint of general relativity emerges from this in a semi-classical limit and we then compute the operator constraint algebra. Also, we find states in the kinematical Hilbert space on which the expectation value of the Dirac type operator gives the Dirac Hamiltonian in a semi-classical limit and thus provides a connection to fermionic quantum field theory. Finally, an almost-commutative algebra emerges from the holonomy-diffeomorphism algebra in the same limit.

C*-algebras of Holonomy-Diffeomorphisms & Quantum Gravity II

We introduce the holonomy-diffeomorphism algebra, a C*-algebra generated by flows of vectorfields and the compactly supported smooth functions on a manifold. We show that the separable representations of the holonomy-diffeomorphism algebra are given by measurable connections, and that the unitary equivalence of the representations corresponds to measured gauge equivalence of the measurable connections. We compare the setup to Loop Quantum Gravity and show that the generalized connections found there are not contained in the spectrum of the holonomy-diffeomorphism algebra in dimensions higher than one. This is the second paper of two, where the prequel gives an exposition of a framework of quantum gravity based on the holonomy-diffeomorphism algebra.

C*-algebras of Holonomy-Diffeomorphisms & Quantum Gravity I

A new approach to a unified theory of quantum gravity based on noncommutative geometry and canonical quantum gravity is presented. The approach is built around a *-algebra generated by local holonomy-diffeomorphisms on a 3-manifold and a quantized Dirac type operator; the two capturing the kinematics of quantum gravity formulated in terms of Ashtekar variables. We prove that the separable part of the spectrum of the algebra is contained in the space of measurable connections modulo gauge transformations and we give limitations to the non-separable part. The construction of the Dirac type operator -- and thus the application of noncommutative geometry -- is motivated by the requirement of diffeomorphism invariance. We conjecture that a semi-finite spectral triple, which is invariant under volume-preserving diffeomorphisms, arise from a GNS construction of a semi-classical state. Key elements of quantum field theory emerge from the construction in a semi-classical limit, as does an almost commutative algebra. Finally, we note that the spectrum of loop quantum gravity emerges from a discretization of our construction. Certain convergence issues are left unresolved. This paper is the first of two where the second paper is concerned with mathematical details and proofs concerning the spectrum of the holonomy-diffeomorphism algebra.

Intersecting Quantum Gravity with Noncommutative Geometry - a Review

We review applications of noncommutative geometry in canonical quantum gravity. First, we show that the framework of loop quantum gravity includes natural noncommutative structures which have, hitherto, not been explored. Next, we present the construction of a spectral triple over an algebra of holonomy loops. The spectral triple, which encodes the kinematics of quantum gravity, gives rise to a natural class of semiclassical states which entail emerging fermionic degrees of freedom. In the particular semiclassical approximation where all gravitational degrees of freedom are turned off, a free fermionic quantum field theory emerges. We end the paper with an extended outlook section.
