Kinetic field theory: effects of modified gravity theories with screening mechanisms on non-linear cosmic density fluctuations

In a mean-field approximation within Kinetic Field Theory, it is possible to derive an accurate analytic expression for the power spectrum of present-day non-linear cosmic density fluctuations. It depends on the theory of gravity and the cosmological model via the expansion function of the background space-time, the growth factor derived from it, and the gravitational coupling strength, which may deviate from Newton's constant in a manner depending on time and spatial scale. In earlier work [1], we introduced a functional Taylor expansion around general relativity and the cosmological standard model to derive the effects of a wide class of modified-gravity theories on the non-linear power spectrum, assuming that such effects need to be small given the general success of the standard model. Here, we extend this class towards theories with small-scale screening, modeling screening effects by a suitably flexible interpolating function. We compare the Taylor expansion with full mean-field solutions and find good agreement where expected. We find typical relative enhancements of the non-linear power spectrum between a few and a few ten per cent in a broad range of wave numbers between $k\gtrsim0.1-10\,h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$, in good qualitative agreement with results of numerical simulations. Taking nDGP gravity as a quantitative example we compare our results to N-body simulations and find percent-level agreement for wavenumbers $k\lesssim 2\,h\,\text{Mpc}^{-1}$, if the scale where screening sets in, $k^*$, is adapted appropriately. This extends the application of our analytic approach to non-linear cosmic structure formation to essentially all classes of modified-gravity theories.

Kinetic field theory: Non-linear cosmic power spectra in the mean-field approximation

We use the recently developed Kinetic Field Theory (KFT) for cosmic structure formation to show how non-linear power spectra for cosmic density fluctuations can be calculated in a mean-field approximation to the particle interactions. Our main result is a simple, closed and analytic, approximate expression for this power spectrum. This expression has two parameters characterising non-linear structure growth which can be calibrated within KFT itself. Using this self-calibration, the non-linear power spectrum agrees with results obtained from numerical simulations to within typically $\lesssim10\,\%$ up to wave numbers $k\lesssim10\,h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ at redshift $z = 0$. Adjusting the two parameters to optimise agreement with numerical simulations, the relative difference to numerical results shrinks to typically $\lesssim 5\,\%$. As part of the derivation of our mean-field approximation, we show that the effective interaction potential between dark-matter particles relative to Zel'dovich trajectories is sourced by non-linear cosmic density fluctuations only, and is approximately of Yukawa rather than Newtonian shape.

Constraining the cosmological evolution of scalar-tensor theories with local measurements of the time variation of G

We determine the conditions for which the constraints from lunar laser ranging on the time evolution of the local gravitational constant can be extrapolated to impose constraints on the time evolution of the cosmological gravitational constant in scalar-tensor theories of modified gravity. We allow for the possibility that the scalar-tensor theories are non-linear and contain a screening mechanism. This results in strong constraints on the running of the cosmological Planck mass described by the Horndeski function $|α_M|\lesssim 0.002$. We find that our assumptions are valid for most Vainshtein and kinetic screening models, where the shift symmetry $ϕ\rightarrowϕ+ c$ holds, but are violated by some Chameleon and Symmetron screening models, where the macroscopic equivalence principle is broken.

The Shape Dependence of Vainshtein Screening in the Cosmic Matter Bispectrum

One of the most pressing questions in modified gravity is how deviations from general relativity can manifest in upcoming galaxy surveys. This is especially relevant for theories exhibiting Vainshtein screening, where such deviations are efficiently suppressed within a (typically large) Vainshtein radius. However, Vainshtein screening is known to be shape dependent: it is most effective around spherical sources, weaker around cylindrical objects and completely absent for planar sources. The Cosmic Web therefore offers a testing ground, as it displays many shapes in the form of clusters, filaments and walls. In this work, we explicitly derive the signature of the shape dependence of Vainshtein screening on the matter bispectrum, by considering a cubic Galileon model with a conformal coupling to matter and a cosmological constant. We perform a second order perturbative analysis, deriving analytic, integral expressions for the bispectrum, which we integrate using hi_class. We find that the shape dependence of Vainshtein screening enters the bispectrum with a unique scale-factor dependence of $\propto a^{3/2}$. The magnitude of the effect today is up to 2 % for a model whose linear growth rate deviates up to 5 % from $Λ$CDM.

Kinetic Field Theory: Cosmic Structure Formation and Fluctuation-Dissipation Relations

Building upon the recently developed formalism of Kinetic Field Theory (KFT) for cosmic structure formation by Bartelmann et al., we investigate a kinematic relationship between diffusion and gravitational interactions in cosmic structure formation. In the first part of this work we explain how the process of structure formation in KFT can be separated into three processes, particle diffusion, the accumulation of structure due to initial momentum correlations and interactions relative to the inertial motion of particles. We study these processes by examining the time derivative of the non-linear density power spectrum in the Born approximation. We observe that diffusion and accumulation are delicately balanced because of the Gaussian form of the initial conditions, and that the net diffusion, resulting from adding these two counteracting contributions, approaches the contributions from the interactions in amplitude over time. This hints at a kinematic relation between diffusion and interactions in KFT. Indeed, in the second part, we show that the response of the system to arbitrary gradient forces is directly related to the evolution of particle diffusion in the form of kinematic fluctuation-dissipation relations (FDRs). This result is independent of the interaction potential. We show that this relationship roots in a time-reversal symmetry of the underlying generating functional. Furthermore, our studies demonstrate how FDRs originating from purely kinematic arguments can be used in theories far from equilibrium.

Analytic calculation of the non-linear cosmic density-fluctuation power spectrum in the Born approximation

We derive a non-perturbative, closed, analytic equation for the non-linear power spectrum of cosmic density fluctuations. This result is based on our kinetic field theory (KFT) of cosmic structure formation and on evaluating particle interactions in the Born approximation. At redshift zero, relative deviations between our analytic result and typical numerical results are ~ 15 % on average up to wave numbers of k <= 10 h/Mpc. The theory underlying our analytic equation is fully specified once the statistical properties of the initial density and momentum fluctuations are set. It has no further adjustable parameters. Apart from this equation, our main result is that the characteristic non-linear deformations of the power spectrum at late cosmic times are determined by the initial momentum correlations and a partial compensation between diffusion damping and particle interactions.

Kinetic Field Theory: Effects of momentum correlations on the cosmic density-fluctuation power spectrum

In earlier work, we have developed a Kinetic Field Theory (KFT) for cosmological structure formation and showed that the non-linear density-fluctuation power spectrum known from numerical simulations can be reproduced quite well even if particle interactions are taken into account to first order only. Besides approximating gravitational interactions, we had to truncate the initial correlation hierarchy of particle momenta at the second order. Here, we substantially simplify KFT. We show that its central object, the free generating functional, can be factorized, taking the full hierarchy of momentum correlations into account. The factors appearing in the generating functional, which we identify as non-linearly evolved density-fluctuation power spectra, have a universal form and can thus be tabulated for fast access in perturbation schemes. In this paper, we focus on a complete evaluation of the free generating functional of KFT, not including particle interactions yet. This implies that the non-linearly evolved power spectra contain a damping term which reflects that structures are being wiped out at late times by free streaming. Once particle interactions will be taken into account, they will compensate this damping. If we suppress this damping in a way suggested by the fluctuation-dissipation relations of KFT, our results show that the complete hierarchy of initial momentum correlations is responsible for a large part of the characteristic non-linear deformation and the mode transport in the density-fluctuation power spectrum. Without any adjustable parameters, KFT accurately reproduces the scale at which non-linear evolution sets in. Finally, we further develop perturbation theory based on the factorization of the generating functional and propose a diagrammatic scheme for the perturbation terms.
