Study of interference effects in the search for flavour-changing neutral current interactions involving the top quark and a photon or a $Z$ boson at the LHC

Flavour-changing neutral-current interactions of the top quark can be searched for in top-quark pair production with one top quark decaying to an up-type quark and a neutral boson, and they can be searched for in the single production of a top quark in association with such a boson. Both processes interfere if an additional up-type quark is produced in the case of single production. The impact of these interference effects on searches for flavour-changing neutral currents at the LHC is studied for the case where the neutral boson is a photon or a $Z$ boson. Interference effects are found to be smaller than variations of the renormalisation and factorisation scales.

Constraining top-quark couplings combining top-quark and $\boldsymbol{B}$ decay observables

We present a first, consistent combination of measurements from top-quark and $B$ physics to constrain top-quark properties within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of this approach and detail the ingredients required for a proper combination of observables from different energy scales. Specifically, we employ measurements of the $t\bar tγ$ cross section together with measurements of the $\bar B\rightarrow X_sγ$ branching fraction to test the Standard Model and look for new physics contributions to the couplings of the top quark to the gauge bosons within SMEFT. We perform fits of three Wilson coefficients of dimension-six operators considering only the individual observables as well as their combination to demonstrate how the complementarity between top-quark and $B$ physics observables allows to resolve ambiguities and significantly improves the constraints on the Wilson coefficients. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is found with present data.

A tagger for strange jets based on tracking information using long short-term memory

An algorithm for the identification of jets that originate from the hadronisation of strange quarks is presented, which complements existing algorithms for the identification of jets that originate from $b$-quarks and $c$-quarks. The algorithm is based on the properties of tracks and uses long short-term memory recurrent neural networks to discriminate between jets from strange quarks and jets from down and up quarks. The performance of the algorithm is compared to a simple benchmark algorithm that uses the transverse-momentum fraction carried by a reconstructed $K_S \rightarrow π^+π^-$ decay. While the benchmark algorithm is limited to signal efficiencies smaller than 13%, the proposed algorithm is not limited in efficiency. For signal efficiencies of 30% and 70%, background efficiencies of 21% and 63% are achieved, indicating the challenge of discriminating strange jets from jets that originate from first-generation quarks.

From the Bottom to the Top -- Reconstruction of $t\bar{t}$ Events with Deep Learning

The reconstruction of top-quark pair-production ($t\bar{t}$) events is a prerequisite for many top-quark measurements. We use a deep neural network, trained with Monte-Carlo simulated events, to reconstruct $t\bar{t}$ decays in the lepton+jets final state. Comparing our approach to a widely-used kinematic fit, we find significant improvements in the correct assignment of jets to the partons from the decay, and we study the reconstruction performance of several kinematic top-quark properties. We document our workflow for the optimisation of the hyperparameters of the deep neural network. This workflow can be followed by experimental collaborations to retrain the network taking into account their detailed detector simulations.

Overview of searches for single production of vector-like top and bottom quarks with the ATLAS experiment at 13 TeV

Vector-like quarks (VLQ) that couple preferentially to third-generation Standard Model (SM) quarks are a well-motivated extension of the SM, which could solve in particular the hierarchy problem. While VLQs can be produced in pairs via the strong interaction at the LHC, the cross section for single production may be larger than the pair production cross section for VLQ masses above the current exclusion limits. An overview of the searches for the single production of VLQs at the ATLAS experiment that use data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to up to 79.8 fb$^{-1}$, is presented. Vector-like top quarks are searched for in the decay channel $T\rightarrow Wb$ and in the decay channel $T\rightarrow Zt$ with the $Z$ boson decaying to two charged leptons. Vector-like bottom quarks are searched for in the decay channel $B\rightarrow Hb$ with the Higgs boson decaying to two photons. No significant excess over the SM prediction is found and 95% CL exclusion limits are set on the single production of VLQs as a function of their mass and coupling to SM quarks.

EFTfitter---A tool for interpreting measurements in the context of effective field theories

Over the past years, the interpretation of measurements in the context of effective field theories has attracted much attention in the field of particle physics. We present a tool for interpreting sets of measurements in such models using a Bayesian ansatz by calculating the posterior probabilities of the corresponding free parameters numerically. An example is given, in which top-quark measurements are used to constrain anomalous couplings at the Wtb-vertex.

Dark Matter Benchmark Models for Early LHC Run-2 Searches: Report of the ATLAS/CMS Dark Matter Forum

This document is the final report of the ATLAS-CMS Dark Matter Forum, a forum organized by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations with the participation of experts on theories of Dark Matter, to select a minimal basis set of dark matter simplified models that should support the design of the early LHC Run-2 searches. A prioritized, compact set of benchmark models is proposed, accompanied by studies of the parameter space of these models and a repository of generator implementations. This report also addresses how to apply the Effective Field Theory formalism for collider searches and present the results of such interpretations.

Experimental results with boosted top quarks in the final state

An overview of analyses using data at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and 8 TeV of proton-proton collisions at the LHC is presented. These analyses use boosted techniques to search for new phenomena involving top quarks and to measure the production of top quarks at high transverse momenta. Such techniques involve top-quark tagging algorithms, boson-tagging algorithms, and strategies for b-tagging and lepton identification in the environment where the top quark decay products are close to each other. The strategies are optimized for the different final states and for different ranges of the transverse momenta of the particles involved, improving on traditional resolved analysis strategies.

A likelihood-based reconstruction algorithm for top-quark pairs and the KLFitter framework

A likelihood-based reconstruction algorithm for arbitrary event topologies is introduced and, as an example, applied to the single-lepton decay mode of top-quark pair production. The algorithm comes with several options which further improve its performance, in particular the reconstruction efficiency, i.e., the fraction of events for which the observed jets and leptons can be correctly associated with the final-state particles of the corresponding event topology. The performance is compared to that of well-established reconstruction algorithms using a common framework for kinematic fitting. This framework has a modular structure which describes the physics processes and detector models independently. The implemented algorithms are generic and can easily be ported from one experiment to another.

Warped Extra Dimensional Benchmarks for Snowmass 2013

The framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in it is a very well-motivated extension of the SM since it can address both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchy problems of the SM. We consider signals at the 14 and 33 TeV large hadron collider (LHC) resulting from the direct production of the new particles in this framework, i.e.,Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the SM particles. We focus on spin-1 (gauge boson) and spin-2 (graviton) KK particles and their decays to top/bottom quarks (flavor-conserving) and W/Z and Higgs bosons, in particular. We propose two benchmarks for this purpose, with the right-handed (RH) or LH top quark, respectively, being localized very close to the TeV end of the extra dimension. We present some new results at the 14 TeV (with 300 fb$^-1$ and 3000 fb$^-1$) and 33 TeV LHC. We find that the prospects for discovery of these particles are quite promising, especially at the high-luminosity upgrade.

Measurement of the inclusive ttgamma cross section at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A first measurement of the ttgamma cross section in pp collisions at the LHC using 1.04 fb^-1 of data taken with the ATLAS detector is presented. A total of 122 candidate events were identified in the single electron and single muon channels. The contributions from background processes with prompt photons, and with electrons or hadrons misidentified as photons were estimated reducing the dependence on simulations by the use of data-driven techniques. The resulting cross section times branching ratio into the single lepton and dilepton decay channels for photons with pt > 8 GeV reads σ_ttgamma * BR = 1.9 pm 0.5 (stat.) pm 0.8 (syst.) pm 0.1 (lumi.) pb, which is consistent with the Standard Model expectation from theoretical calculations. The significance of the ttgamma signal was estimated to 2.5 σ.
