$β$-VAEs as Effective Theories: Tolerance-Dependent Dimension

In a $β$-VAE, increasing the regularization strength acts as a spectral cutoff by collapsing low-utility latent coordinates. In the linear Gaussian VAE, the collapse order matches the ranking of reconstruction utilities exactly, because both are set by the PCA spectrum. We ask which parts of this picture survive in fully connected nonlinear VAEs trained on WorldClim. We find that nonlinear interactions shift and broaden collapse onsets, so thresholds no longer coincide exactly with utilities. However, the common ordering is preserved over the resolved ranks, so the spectral cutoff still acts as a utility cutoff and the effective-description logic carries through. The resulting effective-dimension curves reveal a head--tail tradeoff: increasing depth concentrates utility into the first few coordinates but worsens tail fidelity.

Latent Spectroscopy: Posterior Collapse as a Feature

We show that, in linear Gaussian VAEs, posterior collapse is a form of latent feature selection. Feature importance is set by each latent coordinate's contribution to reconstruction, itself given by the corresponding PCA eigenvalue. Varying the regularizer strength $β$ reveals a ranked spectrum of collapse events, with thresholds set by the utility/PCA spectrum. A mode-by-mode analysis identifies the scale-invariant signal fraction as an order parameter obeying Landau scaling near collapse. WorldClim experiments confirm both the utility-threshold calibration and the predicted near-collapse scaling.

Establishing a real-time traffic alarm in the city of Valencia with Deep Learning

Urban traffic emissions represent a significant concern due to their detrimental impacts on both public health and the environment. Consequently, decision-makers have flagged their reduction as a crucial goal. In this study, we first analyze the correlation between traffic flux and pollution in the city of Valencia, Spain. Our results demonstrate that traffic has a significant impact on the levels of certain pollutants (especially $\text{NO}_\text{x}$). Secondly, we develop an alarm system to predict if a street is likely to experience unusually high traffic in the next 30 minutes, using an independent three-tier level for each street. To make the predictions, we use traffic data updated every 10 minutes and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks. We trained the LSTM using traffic data from 2018, and tested it using traffic data from 2019.

Exploring how a Generative AI interprets music

We use Google's MusicVAE, a Variational Auto-Encoder with a 512-dimensional latent space to represent a few bars of music, and organize the latent dimensions according to their relevance in describing music. We find that, on average, most latent neurons remain silent when fed real music tracks: we call these "noise" neurons. The remaining few dozens of latent neurons that do fire are called "music neurons". We ask which neurons carry the musical information and what kind of musical information they encode, namely something that can be identified as pitch, rhythm or melody. We find that most of the information about pitch and rhythm is encoded in the first few music neurons: the neural network has thus constructed a couple of variables that non-linearly encode many human-defined variables used to describe pitch and rhythm. The concept of melody only seems to show up in independent neurons for longer sequences of music.

Predicting the traffic flux in the city of Valencia with Deep Learning

Traffic congestion is a major urban issue due to its adverse effects on health and the environment, so much so that reducing it has become a priority for urban decision-makers. In this work, we investigate whether a high amount of data on traffic flow throughout a city and the knowledge of the road city network allows an Artificial Intelligence to predict the traffic flux far enough in advance in order to enable emission reduction measures such as those linked to the Low Emission Zone policies. To build a predictive model, we use the city of Valencia traffic sensor system, one of the densest in the world, with nearly 3500 sensors distributed throughout the city. In this work we train and characterize an LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) Neural Network to predict temporal patterns of traffic in the city using historical data from the years 2016 and 2017. We show that the LSTM is capable of predicting future evolution of the traffic flux in real-time, by extracting patterns out of the measured data.

Symmetry meets AI

We explore whether Neural Networks (NNs) can {\it discover} the presence of symmetries as they learn to perform a task. For this, we train hundreds of NNs on a {\it decoy task} based on well-controlled Physics templates, where no information on symmetry is provided. We use the output from the last hidden layer of all these NNs, projected to fewer dimensions, as the input for a symmetry classification task, and show that information on symmetry had indeed been identified by the original NN without guidance. As an interdisciplinary application of this procedure, we identify the presence and level of symmetry in artistic paintings from different styles such as those of Picasso, Pollock and Van Gogh.

Describing viable technicolor scenarios

We construct an effective lagrangian for new strong interactions at the LHC, including as a first step the two lightest triplets of spin-1 resonances. Our parametrization is general enough to allow for previously unstudied spectrum and couplings. Among available frameworks to describe the spin-1 sector, we rely on an extra-dimensional description. Our approach limits the number of parameters, yet is versatile enough to describe the phenomenology of a wide range of new scenarios of strong electroweak symmetry breaking.

The fifth dimension as an analogue computer for strong interactions at the LHC

We present a mechanism to get S ~ 0 or even negative, without bringing into play the SM fermion sector. This mechanism can be applied to a wide range of 5D models, including composite Higgs and Higgsless models. As a realization of the mechanism we introduce a simple model, although the effect on S does not rely on the underlying dynamics generating the background. Models that include this mechanism enjoy the following features: weakly-coupled light resonances (as light as 600 GeV) and degenerate or inverted resonance spectrum.

(Not) Summing over Kaluza-Kleins

Models in extra-dimensions have unique features. Many of their surprising properties simply result from the underlying 5D structure. This structure shows up as ``Sum Rules'' involving the whole tower of Kaluza-Kleins. In this paper, we present a holographic shortcut and derive these results without solving the eigenvalue problem: we express 4D physical quantities directly in terms of the 5D metric. In warped space, one can go further and isolate the effect of the new physics sector. This method can be used for any 5D model, and we apply it here to the case of holographic QCD and technicolor.

A negative S parameter from Holographic Technicolor

We present a new class of 5D models, Holographic Technicolor, which fulfills the basic requirements for a candidate of comprehensible 4D strong dynamics at the electroweak scale. It is the first Technicolor-like model able to provide a vanishing or even negative tree-level S parameter, avoiding any no-go theorem on its sign. The model is described in the large-N regime. S is therefore computable: possible corrections coming from boundary terms follow the 1/N suppression, and generation of fermion masses and the S parameter issue do split up. We investigate the model's 4D dual, probably walking Technicolor-like with a large anomalous dimension.

Geometric approach to condensates in holographic QCD

An SU(Nf)xSU(Nf) Yang-Mills theory on an extra-dimensional interval is considered, with appropriate symmetry-breaking boundary conditions on the IR brane. UV-brane to UV-brane correlators at high energies are compared with the OPE of two-point functions of QCD quark currents. Condensates correspond to departure from AdS of the (different) metrics felt by vector and axial combinations, away from the UV brane. Their effect on hadronic observables is studied: the extracted condensates agree with the signs and orders of magnitude expected from QCD.

Lepton-number violation and right-handed neutrinos in Higgs-less effective theories

Following previous work, we identify a symmetry S_nat that generalizes the concept of custodial symmetry, keeping under control deviations from the Standard Model (SM). To realize S_nat linearly, the space of gauge fields has to be extended. Covariant constraints formulated in terms of spurions reduce S_nat back to SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y. This allows for a covariant introduction of explicit S_nat-breaking parameters. We assume that S_nat is at play in a theory of electroweak symmetry-breaking without a light Higgs particle. We describe some consequences of this assumption, using a non-decoupling effective theory in which the loop expansion procedure is based on both momentum and spurion power counting, as in Chiral Perturbation Theory. A hierarchy of lepton-number violating effects follows. Leading corrections to the SM are non-oblique. The effective theory includes stable light right-handed neutrinos, with an unbroken Z_2 symmetry forbidding neutrino Dirac masses. nu_R contribution to dark matter places bounds on their masses.

The A5 and the pion field

In this talk, an SU(Nf)xSU(Nf)Yang-Mills model with a compact extra-dimension is used to describe the spin-1 mesons and pions of massless QCD in the large-Nc. The right 4D symmetry and symmetry-breaking pattern is produced by imposing appropriate boundary conditions. The Goldstone boson fields are constructed using a Wilson line. We derive the low-energy limit (chiral lagrangian), discuss rho-meson dominance, sum rules between resonance couplings and the relation with the QCD high-energy behavior. Finally, we provide an analytic expression for the two-point function of vector and axial currents.

Interpolating between low and high energy QCD via a 5D Yang-Mills model

We describe the Goldstone bosons of massless QCD together with an infinite number of spin-1 mesons. The field content of the model is SU(Nf)xSU(Nf) Yang-Mills in a compact extra-dimension. Electroweak interactions reside on one brane. Breaking of chiral symmetry occurs due to the boundary conditions on the other brane, away from our world, and is therefore spontaneous. Our implementation of the holographic recipe maintains chiral symmetry explicit throughout. For intermediate energies, we extract resonance couplings. These satisfy sum rules due to the 5D nature of the model. These sum rules imply, when taking the high energy limit, that perturbative QCD constraints are satisfied. We also illustrate how the 5D model implies a definite prescription for handling infinite sums over 4D resonances. Taking the low energy limit, we recover the chiral expansion and the corresponding non-local order parameters. All local order parameters are introduced separately.

Higgs-less Higgs mechanism: low-energy expansion

In this talk, we describe an effective theory for electroweak symmetry breaking without a physical Higgs, based on a symmetry larger than the electroweak gauge group. This symmetry forbids deviations from the Standard Model at the leading order in the appropriate chiral expansion. Indeed, the large symmetry allows for a consistent expansion of the effective theory in powers of momenta and spurions. The latter are automatically present: they define the covariant reduction from the large symmetry to the electroweak group.

Anomaly-matching and Higgs-less effective theories

We reconsider the low-energy effective theory for Higgs-less electroweak symmetry breaking: we study the anomaly-matching in the situation where all Goldstone fields disappear from the spectrum as a result of the Higgs mechanism. We find that the global SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L} symmetry of the underlying theory, which is spontaneously broken to SU(2)_{L+R} x U(1)_{B-L} has to be anomaly-free. For the sake of generality, we include the possibility of light spin-1/2 bound states resulting from the dynamics of the strongly-interacting symmetry-breaking sector, in addition to the Goldstone bosons. Such composite fermions may have non-standard couplings at the leading order, and an arbitrary total B-L charge. In order to perform the anomaly-matching in that case, we generalize the construction of the Wess-Zumino effective lagrangian. Composite fermions beyond the three known generations are theoretically allowed, and there are no restrictions from the anomaly-matching on their couplings nor on their U(1)_{B-L} charge. Absence of global anomalies for the composite sector as a whole does not preclude anomalous triple gauge boson couplings arising from composite fermion triangular diagrams. On the other hand, the trace of B-L over elementary fermions must vanish if all Goldstone modes are to disappear from the spectrum.

The role of spurions in Higgs-less electroweak effective theories

Inspired by recent developments of moose models we reconsider low-energy effective theories of Goldstone bosons, gauge fields and chiral fermions applied to low-energy QCD and to Higgs-less electroweak symmetry breaking. Couplings and the corresponding reduction of symmetry are introduced via constraints enforced by a set of non-propagating covariantly constant spurion fields. Relics of the latter are used as small expansion parameters conjointly with the usual low-energy expansion. Certain couplings can only appear at higher orders of the spurion expansion and consequently, they become naturally suppressed independently of the idea of dimensional deconstruction. At leading order this leads to a set of generalized Weinberg sum rules and to the suppression of non-standard couplings to fermions in Higgs-less EWSB models with the minimal particle content. Within the latter, higher spurion terms allow for a fermion mass matrix with the standard CKM structure and CP violation. In addition, Majorana masses for neutrinos are possible. Examples of non-minimal models are briefly mentioned.
