The singularities of Yang-Mills connections for bundles on a surface. I. The local model

Let $Σ$ be a closed surface, $G$ a compact Lie group, not necessarily connected, with Lie algebra $g$, endowed with an adjoint action invariant scalar product, let $ξ\colon P \to Σ$ be a principal $G$-bundle, and pick a Riemannian metric and orientation on $Σ$, so that the corresponding Yang-Mills equations $$d_A*K_A = 0$$ are defined, where $K_A$ refers to the curvature of a connection $A$. For every central Yang-Mills connection $A$, the data induce a structure of unitary representation of the stabilizer $Z_A$ on the first cohomology group $\roman H^1_A(Σ,\roman{ad}(ξ))$ with coefficients in the adjoint bundle $\roman{ad}(ξ)$, with reference to $A$, with momentum mapping $Θ_A$ from $\roman H^1_A(Σ,\roman{ad}(ξ))$ to the dual $z^*_A$ of the Lie algebra $z_A$ of $Z_A$. We show that, for every central Yang-Mills connection $A$, a suitable Kuranishi map identifies a neighborhood of zero in the Marsden-Weinstein reduced space $\roman H_A$ for $Θ_A$ with a neighborhood of the point $[A]$ in the moduli space of central Yang-Mills connections on $ξ$.

The singularities of Yang-Mills connections for bundles on a surface. II. The stratification

Let $Σ$ be a closed surface, $G$ a compact Lie group, not necessarily connected, with Lie algebra $g$, endowed with an adjoint action invariant scalar product, let $ξ\colon P \to Σ$ be a principal $G$-bundle, and pick a Riemannian metric and orientation on $Σ$ so that the corresponding Yang-Mills equations are defined. In an earlier paper we determined the local structure of the moduli space $N(ξ)$ of central Yang-Mills connections on $ξ$ near an arbitrary point. Here we show that the decomposition of $N(ξ)$ into connected components of orbit types of central Yang-Mills connections is a stratification in the strong (i.~e. Whitney) sense; furthermore each stratum, being a smooth manifold, inherits a finite volume symplectic structure from the given data. This complements, in a way, results of {\smc Atiyah-Bott} in that it will in general decompose further the critical sets of the corresponding Yang-Mills functional into smooth pieces.

Symplectic and Poisson structures of certain moduli spaces

Symplectic and Poisson structures of certain moduli spaces/Huebschmann,J./ Abstract: Let $π$ be the fundamental group of a closed surface and $G$ a Lie group with a biinvariant metric, not necessarily positive definite. It is shown that a certain construction due to A. Weinstein relying on techniques from equivariant cohomology may be refined so as to yield (i) a symplectic structure on a certain smooth manifold $\Cal M(\Cal P,G)$ containing the space $\roman{Hom}(π,G)$ of homomorphisms and, furthermore, (ii) a hamiltonian $G$-action on $\Cal M(\Cal P,G)$ preserving the symplectic structure, with momentum mapping $μ\colon \Cal M(\Cal P,G) \to g^*$, in such a way that the reduced space equals the space $\roman{Rep}(π,G)$ of representations. Our approach is somewhat more general in that it also applies to twisted moduli spaces; in particular, it yields the {\smc Narasimhan-Seshadri} moduli spaces of semistable holomorphic vector bundles by {\it symplectic reduction in finite dimensions}.This implies that, when the group $G$ is compact, such a twisted moduli space inherits a structure of {\it stratified symplectic space}, and that the strata of these twisted moduli spaces have finite symplectic volume.

Poisson geometry of flat connections for $\roman{SU}(2)$-bundles on surfaces

In earlier work we have shown that the moduli space $N$ of flat connections for the (trivial) $\roman{SU(2)}$-bundle on a closed surface of genus $\ell \geq 2$ inherits a structure of stratified symplectic space with two connected strata $N_Z$ and $N_{(T)}$ and $2^{2\ell}$ isolated points. In this paper we show that, close to each point of $N_{(T)}$, the space $N$ and its Poisson algebra look like a product of $\bold C^{\ell}$ endowed with the standard symplectic Poisson structure with the reduced space and Poisson algebra of the system of $(\ell-1)$ particles in the plane with total angular momentum zero, while close to one of the isolated points, the Poisson algebra on $N$ looks like that of the reduced system of $\ell$ particles in $\bold R^3$ with total angular momentum zero. Moreover, in the genus two case where the space $N$ is known to be smooth we locally describe the Poisson algebra and the various underlying symplectic structures on the strata and their mutual positions explicitly in terms of the Poisson structure.
