Polar Kerr effect from a time-reversal symmetry breaking unidirectional charge density wave

We analyze the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ of a charge ordered state with momentum $\mathbf{Q}=(0,2Q)$ and calculate the intrinsic contribution to the Kerr angle $Θ_K$ using the fully reconstructed tight-binding band structure for layered cuprates beyond the low energy hot spots model and particle hole symmetry. We show that such a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW), which breaks time reversal symmetry as recently put forward by Wang and Chubukov [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 90}, 035149 (2014)], leads to a nonzero polar Kerr effect as observed experimentally. In addition, we model a fluctuating CDW via a large quasiparticle damping of the order of the CDW gap and discuss possible implications for the pseudogap phase. We can qualitatively reproduce previous measurements of underdoped cuprates but making quantitative connections to experiments is hampered by the sensitivity of the polar Kerr effect with respect to the complex refractive index $n(ω)$.

Antiferromagnetism in Iron-Based Superconductors: Selection of Magnetic Order and Quasiparticle Interference

The recent discovery of superconductivity in the iron-based layered pnictides with T_c ranging between 26 and 56K generated enormous interest in the physics of these materials. Here, we review some of the peculiarities of the antiferromagnetic order in the iron pnictides, including the selection of the stripe magnetic order and the formation of the Ising-nematic state in the unfolded BZ within an itinerant description. In addition we analyze the properties of the quasiparticle interference spectrum in the parent antiferromagnetic phase.

Strong Competition of Superconducting and Magnetic Order Parameters in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2

We study the interplay of magnetic and superconducting order in single crystalline hole doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 using muon spin relaxation. We find microscopic coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity. In a strongly underdoped specimen the two forms of order coexist without any measurable reduction of the ordered magnetic moment by superconductivity, while in a nearly optimally doped sample the ordered magnetic moment is strongly suppressed below the superconducting transition temperature. This coupling can be well described within the framework of an effective two-band model incorporating inter- and intra-band interactions. In optimally doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 we observe no traces of static or dynamic magnetism and the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is consistent with two s-wave gaps without nodes.
