Critical relaxation with overdamped quasiparticles in open quantum systems

We study the late-time relaxation following a quench in a driven-dissipative quantum many-body system. We consider the open Dicke model, describing the infinite-range interactions between $N$ atoms and a single, lossy electromagnetic mode. We show that the dynamical phase transition at a critical atom-light coupling is characterized by the interplay between reservoir-driven and intrinsic relaxation processes. Above the critical coupling, small fluctuations in the occupation of the dominant quasiparticle-mode start to grow in time while the quasiparticle lifetime remains finite due to losses. Near the critical interaction strength we observe a crossover between exponential and power-law $1/τ$ relaxation, the latter driven by collisions between quasiparticles. For a quench exactly to the critical coupling, the power-law relaxation extends to infinite times, but the finite lifetime of quasiparticles prevents ageing to appear. We predict our results to be accessible to quench experiments with ultracold bosons in optical resonators.

Stabilizing shallow color centers in diamond created by nitrogen delta-doping using SF$_6$ plasma treatment

Here we report the fabrication of stable, shallow (< 5 nm) nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond by nitrogen delta doping at the last stage of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth process. The NVs are stabilized after treating the diamond in $SF_6$ plasma, otherwise the color centers are not observed, suggesting a strong influence from the surface. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show the presence of only fluorine atoms on the surface, in contrast to previous studies, and suggests very good surface coverage. We managed to detect hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance signal from protons in the immersion oil, revealing a depth of the NVs of about 5 nm

Plans for PANDA Online Computing

The PANDA experiment will not use any hardware trigger, i.e. all raw data are streaming in the data acquisition with a bandwidth of ~280 GB/s. The PANDA Online System is designed to perform data reduction by a factor of ~800 by reconstruction algorithms programmed in VHDL (Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language) on FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays).
