The PairInteraction Toolkit for Modeling Rydberg Physics in Alkali and Alkaline-Earth-Like Atoms

Rydberg atoms provide a powerful platform for exploring strongly interacting quantum systems, both in free space and in structured electromagnetic environments, with growing applications in quantum technology. Accurately modeling their single-atom properties and mutual interactions is essential for interpreting experiments and designing new architectures. We present a unified theoretical framework for Rydberg atoms and their interactions based on multi-channel quantum defect theory (MQDT) and static electromagnetic Green's tensors. MQDT provides a precise description of Rydberg states of divalent atoms such as strontium and ytterbium, while the Green's tensor formalism provides a general and flexible approach for calculating interactions between two Rydberg atoms in arbitrary geometries, including modifications induced by nearby surfaces. We implement this framework in an updated version of the open-source toolkit PairInteraction [Weber et al., J.~Phys.~B~50 (2017)]. The implementation leverages high-performance libraries and achieves speedups of one order of magnitude for pair-potential calculations compared to prior software. We demonstrate the capabilities of the toolkit through example applications to divalent atoms and show excellent agreement with experimental data for an exemplary Stark map of $^{174}$Yb. The modular software architecture enables the community to extend it further.

Topological phase transition in a symmetric blockade structure

We present a numerical study of a blockade Hamiltonian with a local $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. For such models, the existence of a topologically ordered ground state has been proven rigorously for weak Rabi driving [T. F. Maier et al., PRX Quantum 6, 030340 (2025)]. However, the phase diagram beyond weak driving is still an open question. We perform large-scale infinite-size density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) simulations on a cylinder and map out the full phase diagram of the model. We find a single continuous phase transition between the topologically ordered phase and a trivial paramagnetic phase, and confirm numerically the stability of the topologically ordered phase up to Rabi drives comparable to the characteristic energy scale of the system. Furthermore, we compute the excitation gaps and show that the charge gap remains open across the phase transition and charges become confined in the trivial phase. On the other hand, the gap in the symmetric sector closes at the transition, consistent with the condensation of flux excitations.

Quantum Simulation of Spin-1 XXZ-Heisenberg Models and the Haldane Phase with Dysprosium

Dysprosium atoms have proven to be a promising platform for quantum simulation due to their strong magnetic moment and high tunability of interactions. In this work, we propose Dysprosium atoms for simulating the one-dimensional spin-1 XXZ-Heisenberg model, which is known to have a rich phase diagram including the famous Haldane phase. To realize the model, we make use of the strong dipolar exchange interactions that naturally occur in the ground state of Dysprosium due to its large electron angular momentum of J=8. To implement spin-1 particles, we encode the spin degree of freedom into three Zeeman sublevels, which are energetically isolated by applying a magnetic field. Using the density-matrix renormalization group, we analyze the ground-state properties of the resulting effective model. We find that a chain of fermionic Dysprosium atoms in a suitable magnetic field can form a Haldane state with the characteristic spin-1/2 edge modes. Furthermore, we discuss the use of AC Stark shifts and Raman-type schemes for bosonic Dysprosium to isolate effective spin-1 systems and to increase the tunability of model parameters.

Experimentally accessible scheme for a fractional Chern insulator in Rydberg atoms

We present a setup with Rydberg atoms for the realization of a bosonic fractional Chern insulator in artificial matter. The suggested setup relies on Rydberg atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, where excitations hop through the lattice by dipolar exchange interactions, and can be interpreted as hard-core bosons. The quantum many-body Hamiltonian is studied within exact diagonalization and DMRG. We identify experimentally accessible parameters where all signatures indicate the appearance of a fractional state with the same topological properties as the $ν=1/2$ bosonic Laughlin state. We demonstrate an adiabatic ramping procedure, which allows for the preparation of the topological state in a finite system, and demonstrate an experimentally accessible smoking gun signature for the fractional excitations.

Transition state dynamics of a driven magnetic free layer

Magnetization switching in ferromagnetic structures is an important process for technical applications such as data storage in spintronics, and therefore the determination of the corresponding switching rates becomes essential. We investigate a free-layer system in an oscillating external magnetic field resulting in an additional torque on the spin. The magnetization dynamics including inertial damping can be described by the phenomenological Gilbert equation. The magnetization switching between the two stable orientations on the sphere then requires the crossing of a potential region characterized by a moving rank-1 saddle. We adopt and apply recent extensions of transition state theory for driven systems to compute both the time-dependent and average switching rates of the activated spin system in the saddle region.
