The Thermal Renormalization Group for Fermions, Universality, and the Chiral Phase-Transition

We formulate the thermal renormalization group, an implementation of the Wilsonian RG in the real-time (CTP) formulation of finite temperature field theory, for fermionic fields. Using a model with scalar and fermionic degrees of freedom which should describe the two-flavor chiral phase-transition, we discuss the mechanism behind fermion decoupling and universality at second order transitions. It turns out that an effective mass-like term in the fermion propagator which is due to thermal fluctuations and does not break chiral symmetry is necessary for fermion decoupling to work. This situation is in contrast to the high-temperature limit, where the dominance of scalar over fermionic degrees of freedom is due to the different behavior of the distribution functions. The mass-like contribution is the leading thermal effect in the fermionic sector and is missed if a derivative expansion of the fermionic propagator is performed. We also discuss results on the phase-transition of the model considered where we find good agreement with results from other methods.

Higher Dimensional Operators in Top Condensation from a Renormalization Group Point of View

The predictive power of top-condensation models strongly depends on the behaviour of higher dimensional operators. These are analyzed in this paper by an extension of the standard renormalization group (RG) arguments which turns out to be a surprisingly powerful tool. Top-condensation models intermediated by underlying scalar exchange can be shown to be mere reparametrizations of the standard model. Further on, RG-arguments show that dynamical vector states cannot be lowered in top-condensation models. Finally we give a general argument concerning the size of higher dimensional operators of heavy vector exchange.

New Insight in Dynamical Symmetry Breaking via Imaginary Part Analysis

We present a new method solving Schwinger-Dyson equations in gauge theories via imaginary part analysis. The self-consistency equation for the fermion self-energy can be reduced from a numerical unstable eigenvalue problem to a finite dimensional integral which can be solved easily. We can therefore derive relations between the dynamically generated fermion mass, the coupling, the gauge boson mass and the cutoff. For infinite cutoff the fermion mass is independent of the gauge boson mass which should be the relevant scale. Thus for a defined fermion mass it is necessary to incorporate a running coupling constant. Within our framework this is possible in a well defined way. The results are reasonable and in agreement with the renormalization group in the asymptotic regime.
