Greenberg approximation and the geometry of arc spaces

We study the differential properties of generalized arc schemes, and geometric versions of Kolchin's Irreducibility Theorem over arbitrary base fields. As an intermediate step, we prove an approximation result for arcs by algebraic curves.

Singular cohomology of the analytic Milnor fiber, and mixed Hodge structure on the nearby cohomology

We constructed the analytic Milnor fiber is a non-archimedean model of the classical topological Milnor fibration. In the present paper, we describe the homotopy type of the analytic Milnor fiber in terms of a strictly semi-stable model, and we show that its singular cohomology coincides with the weight zero part of the mixed Hodge structure on the nearby cohomology. We give a similar expression for Denef and Loeser's motivic Milnor fiber in terms of a strictly semi-stable model.

A trace formula for varieties over a discretely valued field

We study the motivic Serre invariant of a smoothly bounded algebraic or rigid variety $X$ over a complete discretely valued field $K$ with perfect residue field $k$. If $K$ has characteristic zero, we extend the definition to arbitrary $K$-varieties using Bittner's presentation of the Grothendieck ring and a process of Néron smoothening of pairs of varieties. The motivic Serre invariant can be considered as a measure for the set of unramified points on $X$. Under certain tameness conditions, it admits a cohomological interpretation by means of a trace formula. In the curve case, we use T. Saito's geometric criterion for cohomological tameness to obtain more detailed results. We discuss some applications to Weil-Châtelet groups, Chow motives, and the structure of the Grothendieck ring.

A trace formula for rigid varieties, and motivic Weil generating series for formal schemes

We establish a trace formula for rigid varieties $X$ over a complete discretely valued field, which relates the set of unramified points on $X$ to the Galois action on its étale cohomology. We develop a theory of motivic integration for formal schemes of pseudo-finite type over a complete discrete valuation ring $R$, and we introduce the Weil generating series of a regular formal $R$-scheme $\mathfrak{X}$ of pseudo-finite type, via the construction of a Gelfand-Leray form on its generic fiber. Our trace formula yields a cohomological interpretation of this Weil generating series. When $\mathfrak{X}$ is the formal completion of a morphism $f$ from a smooth irreducible variety to the affine line, then its Weil generating series coincides (modulo normalization) with the motivic zeta function of $f$. When $\mathfrak{X}$ is the formal completion of $f$ at a closed point $x$ of the special fiber $f^{-1}(0)$, we obtain the local motivic zeta function of $f$ at $x$. In the latter case, the generic fiber of $\mathfrak{X}$ is the so-called analytic Milnor fiber of $f$ at $x$; we show that it completely determines the formal germ of $f$ at $x$.

Motivic Serre invariants, ramification, and the analytic Milnor fiber

We show how formal and rigid geometry can be used in the theory of complex singularities, and in particular in the study of the Milnor fibration and the motivic zeta function. We introduce the so-called analytic Milnor fiber associated to the germ of a morphism f from a smooth complex algebraic variety X to the affine line. This analytic Milnor fiber is a smooth rigid variety over the field of Laurent series C((t)). Its etale cohomology coincides with the singular cohomology of the classical topological Milnor fiber of f; the monodromy transformation is given by the Galois action. Moreover, the points on the analytic Milnor fiber are closely related to the motivic zeta function of f, and the arc space of X. We show how the motivic zeta function can be recovered as some kind of Weil zeta function of the formal completion of X along the special fiber of f, and we establish a corresponding Grothendieck trace formula, which relates, in particular, the rational points on the analytic Milnor fiber over finite extensions of C((t)), to the Galois action on its etale cohomology. The general observation is that the arithmetic properties of the analytic Milnor fiber reflect the structure of the singularity of the germ f.

Gauss-Manin connection and t-adic geometry

We show that the de Rham cohomology of any separated and smooth rigid variety over a field of Laurent series of characteristic zero carries a natural formal meromorphic connection, which we call the Gauss-Manin connection. We compare it with the Gauss-Manin connection of a proper and smooth variety over a curve, and with the Gauss-Manin connection of the Milnor fibration at an isolated complex hypersurface singularity.

Relative motives and the theory of pseudo-finite fields

We generalize the motivic incarnation morphism from the theory of arithmetic integration to the relative case, where we work over a base variety S over a field k of characteristic zero. We develop a theory of constructible effective Chow motives over S, and we show how to associate a motive to any S-variety. We give a geometric proof of relative quantifier elimination for pseudo-finite fields, and we construct a morphism from the Grothendieck ring of the theory of pseudo-finite fields over S, to the tensor product of Q with the Grothendieck ring of constructible effective Chow motives. This morphism yields a motivic realization for the parametrized arithmetic motivic integrals of Cluckers-Loeser. Finally, we define relative arc and jet spaces, and the three relative motivic generating series.

Oscillating integrals and Newton polyhedra

We establish a principal value integral formula, for the residue of the largest non-trivial candidate pole of the real or complex local zeta function associated to an analytic germ f, which is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron. In particular, up to an easy non-zero factor, this residue only depends on the (tau_0)-principal part of f, where tau_0 is the smallest face of the Newton polyhedron intersecting the diagonal. This formula allows us to prove some vanishing results for the residue. More precisely, we prove that the residue vanishes when tau_0 is unstable, and we give a partial proof of the reverse implication in the complex case. We also deduce an explicit formula for the residue, in the case where tau_0 is a simplex of codimension 1, and the only points of the support of f on tau_0 are its vertices.

Zeta functions and Alexander modules

We introduce the etale framework to study Igusa zeta functions in several variables, generalizing the machinery of vanishing cycles in the univariate case. We define the etale Alexander modules, associated to a morphism of varieties F from X to affine r-space, a geometric point of X, and an object in the derived category of constructible l-adic sheaves on the inverse image of the r-torus under F. The Alexander modules are sheaves of modules on the scheme of continuous characters of the tame fundamental group of the r-torus. We formulate Loeser's Monodromy and Holomorphy Conjectures for multivariate p-adic zeta functions, and prove them in the case where dim(X)=2, generalizing results from the univariate case. Furthermore, we prove a comparison theorem with the transcendent case, we study a formula of Denef's for the zeta function in terms of a simultaneous embedded resolution, and we generalize a result concerning the degree of the zeta function to our setting.

Motivic generating series for toric surface singularities

Lejeune-Jalabert and Reguera computed the geometric Poincare series P_{geom}(T) for toric surface singularities. They raise the question whether this series equals the arithmetic Poincare series. We prove this equality for a class of toric varieties including the surfaces, and construct a counterexample in the general case. We also compute the motivic Igusa Poincare series Q_{geom}(T) for toric surface singularities, using the change of variables formula for motivic integrals, thus answering a second question of Lejeune-Jalabert and Reguera's. The series Q_{geom}(T) contains more information than the geometric series, since it determines the multiplicity of the singularity. In some sense, this is the only difference between Q_{geom}(T) and P_{geom}(T).

Arcs and resolution of singularities

For a certain class of varieties X, we derive a formula for the valuation d_{X} on the arc space L(Y) of a smooth ambient space Y, in terms of an embedded resolution of singularities. A simple transformation rule yields a formula for the geometric Poincare series. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of varieties, the arithmetic and the geometric Poincare series coincide. We also study the geometric valuation for plane curves.
