The route to magnetic order in the spin-$1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet: The role of interlayer coupling

While the existence of a spin-liquid ground state of the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) is well established, the discussion of the effect of an interlayer coupling (ILC) by controlled theoretical approaches is still lacking. Here we study this problem by using the coupled-cluster method to high orders of approximation. We consider a stacked KHAF with a perpendicular ILC $J_\perp$, where we study ferro- as well as antiferromagnetic $J_\perp$. We find that the spin-liquid ground state (GS) persists until relatively large strengths of the ILC. Only if the strength of the ILC exceeds about 15\% of the intralayer coupling the spin-liquid phase gives way for $q=0$ magnetic long-range order, where the transition between both phases is continuous and the critical strength of the ILC, $|J^c_\perp|$, is almost independent of the sign of $J_\perp$. Thus, by contrast to the quantum GS selection of the strictly two-dimensional KHAF at large spin $s$, the ILC leads first to a selection of the $q=0$ GS. Only at larger $|J_\perp|$ the ILC drives a first-order transition to the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ long-range ordered GS. As a result, the stacked spin-1/2 KHAF exhibits a rich GS phase diagram with two continuous and two discontinuous transitions driven by the ILC.

Hubbard models with nearly flat bands: Ground-state ferromagnetism driven by kinetic energy

We consider the standard repulsive Hubbard model with a flat lowest-energy band for two one-dimensional lattices (diamond chain and ladder) as well as for a two-dimensional lattice (bilayer) at half filling of the flat band. The considered models do not fall in the class of Mielke-Tasaki flat-band ferromagnets, since they do not obey the connectivity conditions. However, the ground-state ferromagnetism can emerge, if the flat band becomes dispersive. To study this kinetic-energy-driven ferromagnetism we use perturbation theory and exact diagonalization of finite lattices. We find as a typical scenario that small and moderate dispersion may lead to a ferromagnetic ground state for sufficiently large on-site Hubbard repulsion $U>U_c$, where $U_c$ increases monotonically with the acquired bandwidth. However, we also observe for some specific parameter cases, that (i) ferromagnetism appears at already very small $U_c$, (ii) ferromagnetism does not show up at all, (iii) the critical on-site repulsion $U_c$ is a nonmonotonic function of the bandwidth, or that (iv) a critical bandwidth is needed to open the window for ground-state ferromagnetism.

Strongly correlated flat-band systems: The route from Heisenberg spins to Hubbard electrons

In this review we recapitulate the basic features of the flat-band spin systems and briefly summarize earlier studies in the field. Main emphasis is made on recent developments which include results for both spin and electron flat-band models. In particular, for flat-band spin systems we highlight field-driven phase transitions for frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets at low temperatures, chiral flat-band states, as well as the effect of a slight dispersion of a previously strictly flat band due to nonideal lattice geometry. For electronic systems, we discuss the universal low-temperature behavior of several flat-band Hubbard models, the emergence of ground-state ferromagnetism in the square-lattice Tasaki-Hubbard model and the related Pauli-correlated percolation problem, as well as the dispersion-driven ground-state ferromagnetism in flat-band Hubbard systems. Closely related studies and possible experimental realizations of the flat-band physics are also described briefly.

Frustrated diamond-chain quantum $XXZ$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field

We consider the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg model on a frustrated diamond-chain lattice in a $z$- or $x$-aligned external magnetic field. We use the strong-coupling approach to elaborate an effective description in the low-temperature strong-field regime. The obtained effective models are spin-1/2 $XY$ chains which are exactly solvable through the Jordan-Wigner fermionization. We perform exact-diagonalization studies of the magnetization curves to test the quality of the effective description. The results may have relevance for the description of the azurite spin-chain compound.

Frustration and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya anisotropy in the kagome francisites Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3)_2$O$_2$X

We investigate the antiferromagnetic canting instability of the spin-1/2 kagome ferromagnet, as realized in the layered cuprates Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3)_2$O$_2$X (X=Br, Cl, and I). While the local canting can be explained in terms of competing exchange interactions, the direction of the ferrimagnetic order parameter fluctuates strongly even at short distances on account of frustration which gives rise to an infinite ground state degeneracy at the classical level. In analogy with the kagome antiferromagnet, the accidental degeneracy is fully lifted only by non-linear 1/S corrections, rendering the selected uniform canted phase very fragile even for spins-1/2, as shown explicitly by coupled-cluster calculations. To account for the observed ordering, we show that the minimal description of these systems must include the microscopic Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions, which we obtain from density-functional band-structure calculations. The model explains all qualitative properties of the kagome francisites, including the detailed nature of the ground state and the anisotropic response under a magnetic field. The predicted magnon excitation spectrum and quantitative features of the magnetization process call for further experimental investigations of these compounds.

Weak Secrecy in the Multi-Way Untrusted Relay Channel with Compute-and-Forward

We investigate the problem of secure communications in a Gaussian multi-way relay channel applying the compute-and-forward scheme using nested lattice codes. All nodes employ half-duplex operation and can exchange confidential messages only via an untrusted relay. The relay is assumed to be honest but curious, i.e., an eavesdropper that conforms to the system rules and applies the intended relaying scheme. We start with the general case of the single-input multiple-output (SIMO) L-user multi-way relay channel and provide an achievable secrecy rate region under a weak secrecy criterion. We show that the securely achievable sum rate is equivalent to the difference between the computation rate and the multiple access channel (MAC) capacity. Particularly, we show that all nodes must encode their messages such that the common computation rate tuple falls outside the MAC capacity region of the relay. We provide results for the single-input single-output (SISO) and the multiple-input single-input (MISO) L-user multi-way relay channel as well as the two-way relay channel. We discuss these results and show the dependency between channel realization and achievable secrecy rate. We further compare our result to available results in the literature for different schemes and show that the proposed scheme operates close to the compute-and-forward rate without secrecy.

Dispersion-driven ferromagnetism in a flat-band Hubbard system

We investigate a mechanism to establish ground-state ferromagnetism in flat-band Hubbard systems based on a kind of {\it order-from-disorder} effect driven by dispersion. As a paradigm we consider a frustrated diamond chain, where for ideal diamond geometry the lowest one-electron band is flat, but the ground state remains paramagnetic for arbitrary on-site repulsion $U$. We focus on half filling of the flat band. By using numerical and analytical arguments we present the ground-state phase diagram for a distorted diamond chain, i.e., the former flat band becomes dispersive. Driven by the interplay of dispersion and interaction the ground state is ferromagnetic if the interaction exceeds a critical value $U_c$.

Tenth-order high-temperature expansion for the susceptibility and the specific heat of spin-s Heisenberg models with arbitrary exchange patterns: Application to pyrochlore and kagome magnets

We present the high-temperature expansion (HTE) up to 10th order of the specific heat C and the uniform susceptibility χfor Heisenberg models with arbitrary exchange patterns and arbitrary spin quantum number s. We encode the algorithm in a C++ program which allows to get explicitly the HTE series for concrete Heisenberg models. We apply our algorithm to pyrochlore ferromagnets and kagome antiferromagnets using several Padé approximants for the HTE series. For the pyrochlore ferromagnet we use the HTE data for χto estimate the Curie temperature T_c as a function of the spin quantum number s. We find that T_c is smaller than that for the simple cubic lattice, although both lattices have the same coordination number. For the kagome antiferromagnet the influence of the spin quantum number s on the susceptibility as a function of renormalized temperature T/s(s+1) is rather weak for temperatures down to T/s(s+1) \sim 0.3. On the other hand, the specific heat as a function of T/s(s+1) noticeably depends on s. The characteristic maximum in C(T) is monotonously shifted to lower values of T/s(s+1) when increasing s.

The square-kagome quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at high magnetic fields: The localized-magnon paradigm and beyond

We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice with almost dispersionless lowest magnon band. For a general exchange coupling geometry we elaborate low-energy effective Hamiltonians which emerge at high magnetic fields. The effective model to describe the low-energy degrees of freedom of the initial frustrated quantum spin model is the (unfrustrated) square-lattice spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model in a $z$-aligned magnetic field. For the effective model we perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations to discuss the low-temperature properties of the square-kagome quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at high magnetic fields. We pay special attention to a magnetic-field driven Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition which occurs at low temperatures.

Numerical study of magnetization plateaux in the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We clarify the existence of several magnetization plateaux for the kagome $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in a magnetic field. Using approximate or exact localized magnon eigenstates, we are able to describe in a similar manner the plateau states that occur for magnetization per site $m=1/3$, $5/9$, and $7/9$ of the saturation value. These results are confirmed using large-scale Exact Diagonalization on lattices up to 63 sites.

Frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets at high magnetic fields: Beyond the flat-band scenario

We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on three frustrated lattices (the diamond chain, the dimer-plaquette chain and the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice) with almost dispersionless lowest magnon band. Eliminating high-energy degrees of freedom at high magnetic fields, we construct low-energy effective Hamiltonians which are much simpler than the initial ones. These effective Hamiltonians allow a more extended analytical and numerical analysis. In addition to the standard strong-coupling perturbation theory we also use a localized-magnon based approach leading to a substantial improvement of the strong-coupling approximation. We perform extensive exact diagonalization calculations to check the quality of different effective Hamiltonians by comparison with the initial models. Based on the effective-model description we examine the low-temperature properties of the considered frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets in the high-field regime. We also apply our approach to explore thermodynamic properties for a generalized diamond spin chain model suitable to describe azurite at high magnetic fields. Interesting features of these highly frustrated spin models consist in a steep increase of the entropy at very small temperatures and a characteristic extra low-temperature peak in the specific heat. The most prominent effect is the existence of a magnetic-field driven Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition occurring in the two-dimensional model.

Semiquantitative theory for high-field low-temperature properties of a distorted diamond spin chain

We consider the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a distorted diamond chain and use the localized-magnon picture adapted to a distorted geometry to discuss some of its high-field low-temperature properties. More specifically, in our study we assume that the partition function for a slightly distorted geometry has the same form as for ideal geometry, though with slightly dispersive one-magnon energies. We also discuss the relevance of such a description to azurite.

Hidden magnetic order in CuNCN

We report a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnet CuNCN. Based on magnetization measurements above room temperature as well as muon spin rotation and electron spin resonance measurements, we unequivocally establish the localized Cu+2-based magnetism and the magnetic transition around 70 K, both controversially discussed in the previous literature. Thermodynamic data conform to the uniform-spin-chain model with a nearest-neighbor intrachain coupling of about 2300 K, in remarkable agreement with the microscopic magnetic model based on density functional theory band-structure calculations. Using exact diagonalization and the coupled-cluster method, we derive a collinear antiferromagnetic order with a strongly reduced ordered moment of about 0.4 mu_B, indicating strong quantum fluctuations inherent to this quasi-one-dimensional spin system. We re-analyze the available neutron-scattering data, and conclude that they are not sufficient to resolve or disprove the magnetic order in CuNCN. By contrast, spectroscopic techniques indeed show signatures of long-range magnetic order below 70 K, yet with a rather broad distribution of internal field probed by implanted muons. We contemplate the possible structural origin of this effect and emphasize peculiar features of the microstructure studied with synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction.

Exact ground state of a frustrated integer-spin modified Shastry-Sutherland model

We consider a two-dimensional geometrically frustrated integer-spin Heisenberg system that admits an exact ground state. The system corresponds to a decorated square lattice with two coupling constants J1 and J2, and it can be understood as a generalized Shastry-Sutherland model. Main elements of the spin model are suitably coupled antiferromagnetic spin trimers with integer spin quantum numbers s and their ground state Phi will be the product state of the local singlet ground states of the trimers. We provide exact numerical data for finite lattices as well as analytical considerations to estimate the range of the existence in dependence on the ratio of the two couplings constants J2 and J1 and on the spin quantum number s. Moreover, we find that the magnetization curves as a function of the applied magnetic field shows plateaus and jumps. In the classical limit s \to \infty the model exhibits phases of three- and two-dimensional ground states separated by a one-dimensional (collinear) plateau state at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization.

The strength of frustration and quantum fluctuations in LiVCuO4

For the 1D-frustrated ferromagnetic J_1-J_2 model with interchain coupling added, we analyze the dynamical and static structure factor S(k,omega), the pitch angle phi of the magnetic structure, the magnetization curve of edge-shared chain cuprates, and focus on LiCuVO4 for which neither a perturbed spinon nor a spin wave approach can be applied. phi is found to be most sensitive to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. For LiVCuO4 the obtained exchange parameters J are in accord with the results for a realistic 5-band extended Hubbard model and LSDA + U predictions yielding alpha=J_2/|J_1| about 0.75 in contrast to 5.5 > alpha > 1.42 suggested in the literature. The alpha-regime of the empirical phi-values in NaCu2O2 and linarite are considered, too.

Eighth-order high-temperature expansion for general Heisenberg Hamiltonians

We explicitly calculate the moments $t_n$ of general Heisenberg Hamiltonians up to eighth order. They have the form of finite sums of products of two factors. The first factor is represented by a (multi-)graph which has to be evaluated for each particular system under consideration. The second factors are well-known universal polynomials in the variable $s(s+1)$, where $s$ denotes the individual spin quantum number. From these moments we determine the corresponding coefficients of the high-temperature expansion of the free energy and the zero field susceptibility by a new method. These coefficients can be written in a form which makes explicit their extensive character. Our results represent a general tool to calculate eighth-order high-temperature series for arbitrary Heisenberg models. The results are applied to concrete systems, namely to magnetic molecules with the geometry of the icosidodecahedron, to frustrated square lattices, and to the pyrochlore magnets. By comparison with other methods that have been recently applied to these systems, we find that the typical susceptibility maximum of the spin-$s$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet is well described by the eighth-order high-temperature series.

Localized states on triangular traps and low-temperature properties of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and repulsive Hubbard models

We consider the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and the repulsive Hubbard model on two $N$-site one-dimensional lattices, which support dispersionless one-particle states corresponding to localized states on triangular trapping cells. We calculate the degeneracy of the ground states in the subspaces with $n\le n_{\max}$, $n_{\max}\propto N$ magnons or electrons as well as the contribution of these states (independent localized states) to thermodynamic quantities. Moreover, we discuss another class of low-lying eigenstates (so-called interacting localized states) and calculate their contribution to the partition function. We also discuss the effect of extra interactions, which lift the degeneracy present due to the chirality of the localized states on triangles. The localized states set an extra low-energy scale in the system and lead to a nonzero residual ground-state entropy and to one (or more) additional low-temperature peak(s) in the specific heat. Low-energy degrees of freedom in the presence of perturbations removing degeneracy owing to the chirality can be described in terms of an effective (pseudo)spin-1/2 transverse $XX$ chain.

Moments of general Heisenberg Hamiltonians up to sixth order

We explicitly calculate the moments t_n of general Heisenberg Hamiltonians up to sixth order. They have the form of finite sums of products of two factors, the first factor being represented by a multigraph and the second factor being a polynomial in the variable s(s + 1), where s denotes the individual spin quantum number. As an application we determine the corresponding coefficients of the expansion of the free energy and the zero field susceptibility in powers of the inverse temperature. These coefficients can be written in a form which makes explicit their extensive character.
