Computer-Aided Design of Rational Motions for 4R and 6R Spatial Mechanism Synthesis

This paper focuses on geometric methods for generating rational motions used in the design of single-loop rational linkages, 1-degree-of-freedom mechanisms that can execute prescribed spatial tasks. Building on established rational motion synthesis methods, we introduce a new interpolation scheme for seven 3D points based on cubic quaternionic Bezier curves. The resulting motion admits factorization, i.e. the synthesis of a spatial six-bar mechanism whose tool frame passes the specified seven points. To support engineering practice, we provide open-source CAD tools that implement also the other methods and provide fast visual evaluation of motion generation and mechanism synthesis.

Quadratic Motion Polynomials With Irregular Factorizations

Motion polynomials are a specific type of polynomial over a Clifford algebra that can conveniently describe rational motions. There exists an algorithm for the factorization of motion polynomials that works in generic cases. It hinges on the invertibility of a certain coefficient occurring in the algorithm. If this coefficient is not invertible, factorizations may or may not exist. In the case of existence we call this an irregular factorization. We characterize quadratic motion polynomials with irregular factorizations in terms of algebraic equations and present examples whose number of unique factorizations range from one to infinitely many. For two special sub-cases we show the unique existence of such polynomials. In case of commuting factors we obtain the conformal Villarceau motion, in case of rigid body motions the circular translation.

Rational Linkages: From Poses to 3D-printed Prototypes

In this paper, a set of tools is introduced that simplifies the synthesis and rapid-prototyping of single-loop rational kinematic chains. It allows the user to perform rational motion interpolation of up to four given poses and yields the design parameters of a linkage that can execute this motion. The package also provides a visualization of the output and performs a self-collision analysis with the possibility to adapt the design parameters. The results can be imported into CAD-systems for fast 3D printing.

Quadratic Spinor Polynomials with Infinitely Many Factorizations

Spinor polynomials are polynomials with coefficients in the even sub-algebra of conformal geometric algebra whose norm polynomial is real. They describe rational conformal motions. Factorizations of spinor polynomial corresponds to the decomposition of the rational motion into elementary motions. Generic spinor polynomials allow for a finite number of factorizations. We present two examples of quadratic spinor polynomials that admit infinitely many factorizations. One of them, the circular translation, is well-known. The other one has only been introduced recently but in a different context. We not only compute all factorizations of these conformal motions but also interpret them geometrically.

A Geometric Algorithm for the Factorization of Spinor Polynomials

We present a new algorithm to decompose generic spinor polynomials into linear factors. Spinor polynomials are certain polynomials with coefficients in the geometric algebra of dimension three that parametrize rational conformal motions. The factorization algorithm is based on the "kinematics at infinity" of the underlying rational motion. Factorizations exist generically but not generally and are typically not unique. We prove that generic multiples of non-factorizable spinor polynomials admit factorizations and we demonstrate at hand of an example how our ideas can be used to tackle the hitherto unsolved problem of "factorizing" algebraic motions.

An Overconstrained Vertical Darboux Mechanism

In this article, we will construct an overconstrained closed-loop linkage consisting of four revolute and one cylindrical joint. It is obtained by factorization of a prescribed vertical Darboux motion. We will investigate the kinematic behaviour of the obtained mechanism, which turns out to have multiple operation modes. Under certain conditions on the design parameters, two of the operation modes will correspond to vertical Darboux motions. It turns out, that for these design parameters, there also exists a second assembly mode.

The Study Variety of Conformal Kinematics

We introduce the Study variety of conformal kinematics and investigate some of its properties. The Study variety is a projective variety of dimension ten and degree twelve in real projective space of dimension 15, and it generalizes the well-known Study quadric model of rigid body kinematics. Despite its high dimension, co-dimension, and degree it is amenable to concrete calculations via conformal geometric algebra (CGA) associated to three-dimensional Euclidean space. Calculations are facilitated by a four quaternion representation which extends the dual quaternion description of rigid body kinematics. In particular, we study straight lines on the Study variety. It turns out that they are related to a class of one-parametric conformal motions introduced by L. Dorst in 2016. Similar to rigid body kinematics, straight lines (that is, Dorst's motions) are important for the decomposition of rational conformal motions into lower degree motions via the factorization of certain polynomials with coefficients in CGA.

Factorization of Quaternionic Polynomials of Bi-Degree (n,1)

We consider polynomials of bi-degree $(n,1)$ over the skew field of quaternions where the indeterminates commute with each other and with all coefficients. Polynomials of this type do not generally admit factorizations. We recall a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a factorization with univariate linear factors that has originally been stated by Skopenkov and Krasauskas. Such a factorization is, in general, non-unique by known factorization results for univariate quaternionic polynomials. We unveil existence of bivariate polynomials with non-unique factorizations that cannot be explained in this way and characterize them geometrically and algebraically. Existence of factorizations is related to the existence of special rulings of two different types (left/right) on the ruled surface parameterized by the bivariate polynomial in the projective space over the quaternions. Special non-uniqueness in above sense can be explained algebraically by commutation properties of factors in suitable factorizations. A necessary geometric condition for this to happen is degeneration to a point of at least one of the left/right rulings.

Analysis of a 3-RUU Parallel Manipulator

The aim of this paper is to give a detailed examination of the input and output singularities of a 3-RUU parallel manipulator in the translational operation mode. This task is achieved by using algebraic constraint equations. For this type of manipulator a complete workspace representation in Study coordinates is presented after elimination of the input parameters. Both, input and output singularities are mapped into a Study subspace as well as into the joint space. Therewith a detailed singularity investigation of the translational operation mode of a 3-RUU parallel manipulator is provided. This paper is an extended version of a previous publication. The addendum comprises the discovery of a possible transition between two operation modes as well as a self motion and an examination of another component of the output singularity surface, most of them for arbitrary design parameters.

Space Kinematics and Projective Differential Geometry Over the Ring of Dual Numbers

We study an isomorphism between the group of rigid body displacements and the group of dual quaternions modulo the dual number multiplicative group from the viewpoint of differential geometry in a projective space over the dual numbers. Some seemingly weird phenomena in this space have lucid kinematic interpretations. An example is the existence of non-straight curves with a continuum of osculating tangents which correspond to motions in a cylinder group with osculating vertical Darboux motions. We also suggest geometrically meaningful ways to select osculating conics of a curve in this projective space and illustrate their corresponding motions. Furthermore, we investigate factorizability of these special motions and use the obtained results for the construction of overconstrained linkages.

Factorization of Dual Quaternion Polynomials Without Study's Condition

In this paper we investigate factorizations of polynomials over the ring of dual quaternions into linear factors. While earlier results assume that the norm polynomial is real ("motion polynomials"), we only require the absence of real polynomial factors in the primal part and factorizability of the norm polynomial over the dual numbers into monic quadratic factors. This obviously necessary condition is also sufficient for existence of factorizations. We present an algorithm to compute factorizations of these polynomials and use it for new constructions of mechanisms which cannot be obtained by existing factorization algorithms for motion polynomials. While they produce mechanisms with rotational or translational joints, our approach yields mechanisms consisting of "vertical Darboux joints". They exhibit mechanical deficiencies so that we explore ways to replace them by cylindrical joints while keeping the overall mechanism sufficiently constrained.

Rational Motions with Generic Trajectories of Low Degree

The trajectories of a rational motion given by a polynomial of degree n in the dual quaternion model of rigid body displacements are generically of degree 2n. In this article we study those exceptional motions whose trajectory degree is lower. An algebraic criterion for this drop of degree is existence of certain right factors, a geometric criterion involves one of two families of rulings on an invariant quadric. Our characterizations allow the systematic construction of rational motions with exceptional degree reduction and explain why the trajectory degrees of a rational motion and its inverse motion can be different.
