First principles electromagnetic responses in medium-mass nuclei

We review the recent progress made in the computation of electromagnetic response functions in light and medium-mass nuclei using coupled-cluster theory. We show how a many-body formulation of the Lorentz integral transform method allows to calculate the photoabsorption cross sections of $^{16, 22}$O and $^{40}$Ca. Then, we discuss electromagnetic sum rules, with particular emphasis on the electric dipole polarizability, $α_D$. By including triples corrections in coupled-cluster theory, we revisit $^{48}$Ca, for which, beside the electric dipole polarizability, we had previously investigated the neutron and proton radii, as well as the size of the neutron-skin thickness [1]. We show that correlations among these observables still hold, albeit a better agreement with experiment is obtained for $α_D$ and the prediction of a small neutron-skin thickness is further corroborated.

Shell-model interactions from chiral effective field theory

We construct valence-space Hamiltonians for use in shell-model calculations, where the residual two-body interaction is based on symmetry principles and the low-momentum expansion from chiral effective field theory. In addition to the usual free-space contact interactions, we also include novel center-of-mass--dependent operators that arise due to the Galilean invariance breaking by in-medium effects. We fitted the low-energy constants to 441 ground- and excited-state energies in the sd shell and obtained a root-mean-square derivation of 1.8 MeV at leading order and of 0.5 MeV at next-to-leading order, with natural low-energy constants in all cases. The developed chiral shell-model interactions enable order-by-order uncertainty estimates and show promising predictions for neutron-rich isotopes beyond the fitted data set.

Precision Mass Measurement of $^{58-63}$Cr: Nuclear Collectivity towards the \emph{N}=40 Island of Inversion

The neutron-rich isotopes $^{58-63}$Cr were produced for the first time at the ISOLDE facility and their masses were measured with the ISOLTRAP spectrometer. The new values are up to 300 times more precise than those in the literature and indicate significantly different nuclear structure from the new mass-surface trend. A gradual onset of deformation is found in this proton and neutron mid-shell region, which is a gateway to the second island of inversion around \emph{N}=40. In addition to comparisons with density-functional theory and large-scale shell-model calculations, we present predictions from the valence-space formulation of the \emph{ab initio} in-medium similarity renormalization group, the first such results for open-shell chromium isotopes.
