Orientifolds of Gepner models without Kähler moduli

One of the main challenges in string theory Calabi-Yau compactifications to four dimensions is the stabilization of the massless complex structure and Kähler moduli. In type IIB string theory, complex structure moduli can be stabilized perturbatively by turning on fluxes on the internal space, while there is no perturbative mechanism for Kähler moduli stabilization. Since every Calabi-Yau manifold has at least one Kähler modulus (the overall volume), there is no hope to stabilize all moduli perturbatively. A way out is given by Landau-Ginzburg/Gepner models string vacua which can have no Kähler moduli. To identify the most promising candidates for fully stabilized perturbative string vacua, we provide an exhaustive list of Landau-Ginzburg orientifold models with no Kähler moduli, and compute for each model the number of complex structure moduli together with the tadpole charge. From this, we can identify which of these models are genuine candidates for phenomenologically relevant string vacua.

Stabilizing massless fields with fluxes in Landau-Ginzburg models

Recent work on flux compactifications suggests that the tadpole constraint generically allows only a limited number of complex structure moduli to become massive, i.e., be stabilized at quadratic order in the spacetime superpotential. We study the effects of higher-order terms systematically around the Fermat point in the $1^9$ Landau-Ginzburg model. This model lives at strong coupling and features no Kähler moduli. We show that, depending on the flux, several massless fields can indeed be stabilized in this fashion, and argue that this paves the way to explicit ${\mathcal N}=1$ Minkowski vacua without flat directions. Along the way, we complete the classification of integral flux vectors with small tadpole contribution. Thereby we are closing in on a future complete understanding of all possible flux configurations in the $1^9$ Landau-Ginzburg model.

Fluxes, Vacua, and Tadpoles meet Landau-Ginzburg and Fermat

Type IIB flux vacua based on Landau-Ginzburg models without Kähler deformations provide fully-controlled insights into the non-geometric and strongly-coupled string landscape. We show here that supersymmetric flux configurations at the Fermat point of the $1^9$ model, which were found long-time ago to saturate the orientifold tadpole, leave a number of massless fields, which however are not all flat directions of the superpotential at higher order. More generally, the rank of the Hessian of the superpotential is compatible with a suitably formulated tadpole conjecture for all fluxes that we found. Moreover, we describe new infinite families of supersymmetric 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Minkowski and AdS vacua and confront them with several other swampland conjectures.

An index for unitarizable $\mathfrak{sl}(m\vert n)$-supermodules

The "superconformal index" is a character-valued invariant attached by theoretical physics to unitary representations of Lie superalgebras, such as $\mathfrak{su}(2,2\vert n)$, that govern certain quantum field theories. The index can be calculated as a supertrace over Hilbert space, and is constant in families induced by variation of physical parameters. This is because the index receives contributions only from "short" irreducible representations such that it is invariant under recombination at the boundary of the region of unitarity. The purpose of this paper is to develop these notions for unitarizable supermodules over the special linear Lie superalgebras $\mathfrak{sl}(m\vert n)$ with $m\ge 2$, $n\ge 1$. To keep it self-contained, we include a fair amount of background material on structure theory, unitarizable supermodules, the Duflo-Serganova functor, and elements of Harish-Chandra theory. Along the way, we provide a precise dictionary between various notions from theoretical physics and mathematical terminology. Our final result is a kind of "index theorem" that relates the counting of atypical constituents in a general unitarizable $\mathfrak{sl}(m\vert n)$-supermodule to the character-valued $Q$-Witten index, expressed as a supertrace over the full supermodule. The formal superdimension of holomorphic discrete series $\mathfrak{sl}(m\vert n)$-supermodules can also be formulated in this framework.

Exponential Networks for Linear Partitions

Previous work has given proof and evidence that BPS states in local Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be described and counted by exponential networks on the punctured plane, with the help of a suitable non-abelianization map to the mirror curve. This provides an appealing elementary depiction of moduli of special Lagrangian submanifolds, but so far only a handful of examples have been successfully worked out in detail. In this note, we exhibit an explicit correspondence between torus fixed points of the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb C^2\subset\mathbb C^3$ and anomaly free exponential networks attached to the quadratically framed pair of pants. This description realizes an interesting, and seemingly novel, "age decomposition" of linear partitions. We also provide further details about the networks' perspective on the full D-brane moduli space.

Six-dimensional supermultiplets from bundles on projective spaces

The projective variety of square-zero elements in the six-dimensional minimal supersymmetry algebra is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^3$. We use this fact, together with the pure spinor superfield formalism, to study supermultiplets in six dimensions, starting from vector bundles on projective spaces. We classify all multiplets whose derived invariants for the supertranslation algebra form a line bundle over the nilpotence variety; one can think of such multiplets as being those whose holomorphic twists have rank one over Dolbeault forms on spacetime. In addition, we explicitly construct multiplets associated to natural higher-rank equivariant vector bundles, including the tangent and normal bundles as well as their duals. Among the multiplets constructed are the vector multiplet and hypermultiplet, the family of $\mathcal{O}(n)$-multiplets, and the supergravity and gravitino multiplets. Along the way, we tackle various theoretical problems within the pure spinor superfield formalism. In particular, we give some general discussion about the relation of the projective nilpotence variety to multiplets and prove general results on short exact sequences and dualities of sheaves in the context of the pure spinor superfield formalism.

The Absolute Swampland

The ``Swampland Program'' aims to discriminate consistent-looking effective field theories that do not admit a UV completion in quantum gravity from those that do. While most often developed under the umbrella of string theory, several swampland criteria have been explored also in other contexts, especially asymptotically safe gravity. A comparison between different approaches can help to clarify the dependence of low-energy constraints on UV physics and thereby shed light on the universality of quantum gravity itself. In this short review we summarise what is known about three important swampland conjectures in string theory and in asymptotic safety. We point out future lines of research that can help to understand to what extent swampland conjectures are absolute, i.e. hold in quantum gravity in general, or relative, i.e. belong only to a specific UV framework.

Adinkras and Pure Spinors

The nilpotence variety for extended supersymmetric quantum mechanics is a cone over a quadric in projective space. The pure spinor correspondence, which relates the description of off-shell supermultiplets to the classification of modules over the corresponding hypersurface ring, reduces to a classical problem of linear algebra. Spinor bundles, which correspond to maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, serve as basic building blocks. Koszul duality appears as a deformed version of the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand correspondence that we make fully concrete. We illustrate in numerous examples the close relationship between these connections and the powerful graphical technology of Adinkras, which appear as a decategorification of special complexes on quadrics. We emphasize the role of R-symmetry for recovering higher-dimensional gauge and gravity multiplets.

Cobordism and Bubbles of Anything in the String Landscape

We study bubble of nothing decays and their reverse processes, the creation of vacua through `bubbles of something', in models of the Universe based on string theory. From the four-dimensional perspective, the corresponding gravitational instantons contain an end-of-the-world (ETW) boundary or brane, realized by the internal manifold shrinking to zero size. The existence of such ETW branes is predicted by the Cobordism Conjecture. We develop the 4d EFT description of such boundaries at three levels: First, by generalizing the Witten bubble through an additional defect. Second, by replacing the compact $S^1$ with a Calabi-Yau orientifold and allowing it to shrink and disappear through a postulated defect. Third, we describe an ETW brane construction for type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications with O3/O7 planes through an appropriate additional O5 orientifolding. Our 4d EFT formalism allows us to compute the decay/creation rates for bubbles of anything depending on two parameters: The size of the relevant defect and its tension a.k.a. the induced (generalized) deficit angle.

A Local Wheeler-DeWitt Measure for the String Landscape

According to the `Cosmological Central Dogma', de Sitter space can be viewed as a quantum mechanical system with a finite number of degrees of freedom, set by the horizon area. We use this assumption together with the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation to approach the measure problem of eternal inflation. Thus, our goal is to find a time-independent wave function of the universe on a total Hilbert space defined as the direct sum of a variety of subspaces: A finite-dimensional subspace for each de Sitter vacuum and an infinite-dimensional subspace for each terminal Minkowski or AdS vaccuum. We argue that, to be consistent with semiclassical intuition, such a solution requires the presence of sources. These are implemented as an inhomogenous term in the WDW equation, induced by the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary or the Linde/Vilenkin tunneling proposal. Taken together, these steps unambiguously lead to what we would like to think of as a `Local WDW measure,' where `local' refers to the fact that the dS part of the resulting wave function describes a superposition of static patches. The global 3-sphere spatial section of the entire multiverse makes no appearance.

On Motivic and Arithmetic Refinements of Donaldson-Thomas invariants

In recent years, a version of enumerative geometry over arbitrary fields has been developed and studied by Kass-Wickelgren, Levine, and others, in which the counts obtained are not integers but quadratic forms. Aiming to understand the relation to other "refined invariants", and especially their possible interpretation in quantum theory, we explain how to obtain a quadratic version of Donaldson-Thomas invariants from the motivic invariants defined in the work of Kontsevich and Soibelman and pose some questions. We calculate these invariants in a few simple examples that provide standard tests for these questions, including degree zero invariants of $\mathbb A^3$ and higher-genus Gopakumar-Vafa invariants recently studied by Liu and Ruan. The comparison with known real and complex counts plays a central role throughout.

A-model Implications of Extended Mirror Symmetry

Associativity of the quantum product ensures flatness of the Dubrovin connection and is the basis for Hodge-theoretic mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We use ring and module structure on cohomology pertaining to a Lagrangian submanifold to define an extension of the A-model Variation of mixed Hodge structure that matches the predictions from extended mirror symmetry. Our construction makes contact with axioms for open Gromov-Witten theory recently proposed by Solomon-Tukachinsky.

Nilpotence varieties

We consider algebraic varieties canonically associated to any Lie superalgebra, and study them in detail for super-Poincaré algebras of physical interest. They are the locus of nilpotent elements in (the projectivized parity reversal of) the odd part of the algebra. Most of these varieties have appeared in various guises in previous literature, but we study them systematically here, from a new perspective: as the natural moduli spaces parameterizing twists of a super-Poincaré-invariant physical theory. We obtain a classification of all possible twists, as well as a systematic analysis of unbroken symmetry in twisted theories. The natural stratification of the varieties, the identification of strata with twists, and the action of Lorentz and $R$-symmetry on the varieties are emphasized. We also include a short and unconventional exposition of the pure-spinor superfield formalism, from the perspective of twisting, and demonstrate that it can be applied to construct familiar multiplets in four-dimensional minimally supersymmetric theories; in all dimensions and with any amount of supersymmetry, this technique produces BRST or BV complexes of supersymmetric theories from the Koszul complex of the cone point over the coordinate ring of the nilpotence variety, possibly tensored with a module over that coordinate ring. In addition, we remark on a natural emergence of nilpotence varieties in the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of supertranslations, and give two applications related to these ideas: a calculation of Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology for the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ supertranslation algebra, and a BV complex matching the field content of type IIB supergravity from the coordinate ring of the corresponding nilpotence variety.

Exponential Networks and Representations of Quivers

We study the geometric description of BPS states in supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges in terms of geodesic networks on suitable spectral curves. We lift and extend several constructions of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke from gauge theory to local Calabi-Yau threefolds and related models. The differential is multi-valued on the covering curve and features a new type of logarithmic singularity in order to account for D0-branes and non-compact D4-branes, respectively. We describe local rules for the three-way junctions of BPS trajectories relative to a particular framing of the curve. We reproduce BPS quivers of local geometries and illustrate the wall-crossing of finite-mass bound states in several new examples. We describe first steps toward understanding the spectrum of framed BPS states in terms of such "exponential networks."

Integrality of Framing and Geometric Origin of 2-functions

We say that a formal power series $\sum a_n z^n$ with rational coefficients is a 2-function if the numerator of the fraction $a_{n/p}-p^2 a_n$ is divisible by $p^2$ for every prime number $p$. One can prove that 2-functions with rational coefficients appear as building block of BPS generating functions in topological string theory. Using the Frobenius map we define 2-functions with coefficients in algebraic number fields. We establish two results pertaining to these functions. First, we show that the class of 2-functions is closed under the so-called framing operation (related to compositional inverse of power series). Second, we show that 2-functions arise naturally in geometry as $q$-expansion of the truncated normal function associated with an algebraic cycle extending a degenerating family of Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

Bounding the Heat Trace of a Calabi-Yau Manifold

The SCHOK bound states that the number of marginal deformations of certain two-dimensional conformal field theories is bounded linearly from above by the number of relevant operators. In conformal field theories defined via sigma models into Calabi-Yau manifolds, relevant operators can be estimated, in the point-particle approximation, by the low-lying spectrum of the scalar Laplacian on the manifold. In the strict large volume limit, the standard asymptotic expansion of Weyl and Minakshisundaram-Pleijel diverges with the higher-order curvature invariants. We propose that it would be sufficient to find an a priori uniform bound on the trace of the heat kernel for large but finite volume. As a first step in this direction, we then study the heat trace asymptotics, as well as the actual spectrum of the scalar Laplacian, in the vicinity of a conifold singularity. The eigenfunctions can be written in terms of confluent Heun functions, the analysis of which gives evidence that regions of large curvature will not prevent the existence of a bound of this type. This is also in line with general mathematical expectations about spectral continuity for manifolds with conical singularities. A sharper version of our results could, in combination with the SCHOK bound, provide a basis for a global restriction on the dimension of the moduli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds.

B-Model Approaches to Instanton Counting

This is the 13th article in the collection of reviews "Exact results in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J. Teschner. It discusses the relation between the instanton partition functions and the partition function of the topological string from the perspective of the B-model. The instanton partition functions provide solutions to the holomorphic anomaly equations characterising the partition functions of the topological string.

Monodromy of Inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs Equations

We study low-degree curves on one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, and their contribution to the space-time superpotential in a superstring compactification with D-branes. We identify all lines that are invariant under at least one permutation of the homogeneous variables, and calculate the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation. The irrational large volume expansions satisfy the recently discovered algebraic integrality. The bulk of our work is a careful study of the topological integrality of monodromy under navigation around the complex structure moduli space. This is a powerful method to recover the single undetermined integration constant that is itself also of arithmetic significance. The examples feature a variety of residue fields, both abelian and non-abelian extensions of the rationals, thereby providing a glimpse of the arithmetic D-brane landscape.
