Total positivity and spectral properties of linearized operators

For a class of semilinear elliptic equations, we establish criteria that guarantee that the linearized operator associated with a solution satisfies certain spectral assumptions that are widely used in the analysis of the stability of solitary waves. The criteria only involve the symbol of the linear operator and positivity and symmetry of the solution, and can therefore be verified without an explicit formula for the solution.

Stability of bound states for regularized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations

We consider the stability of bound-state solutions of a family of regularized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations which were introduced by Dumas, Lannes and Szeftel as models for the propagation of laser beams. Among these bound-state solutions are ground states, which are defined as solutions of a variational problem. We give a sufficient condition for existence and orbital stability of ground states, and use it to verify that ground states exist and are stable over a wider range of nonlinearities than for the nonregularized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We also give another sufficient and almost necessary condition for stability of general bound states, and show that some stable bound states exist which are not ground states.

Existence and stability of a two-parameter family of solitary waves for an NLS-KdV system

We prove existence and stability results for a two-parameter family of solitary-wave solutions to a system in which an equation of nonlinear Schrödinger type is coupled to an equation of Korteweg-de Vries type. Such systems model interactions between short and long dispersive waves. The results extend earlier results of Angulo, Albert and Angulo, and Chen. Our proof involves the characterization of solitary-wave solutions as minimizers of an energy functional subject to two constraints. To establish the precompactness of minimizing sequences via concentrated compactness, we establish the sub-additivity of the problem with respect to both constraint variables jointly.
