Thermalization and Revivals after a Quantum Quench in Conformal Field Theory

We consider a quantum quench in a finite system of length $L$ described by a 1+1-dimensional CFT, of central charge $c$, from a state with finite energy density corresponding to an inverse temperature $β\ll L$. For times $t$ such that $\ell/2<t<(L-\ell)/2$ the reduced density matrix of a subsystem of length $\ell$ is exponentially close to a thermal density matrix. We compute exactly the overlap $\cal F$ of the state at time $t$ with the initial state and show that in general it is exponentially suppressed at large $L/β$. However, for minimal models with $c<1$ (more generally, rational CFTs), at times which are integer multiples of $L/2$ (for periodic boundary conditions, $L$ for open boundary conditions) there are (in general, partial) revivals at which $\cal F$ is $O(1)$, leading to an eventual complete revival with ${\cal F}=1$. There is also interesting structure at all rational values of $t/L$, related to properties of the CFT under modular transformations. At early times $t\!\ll\!(Lβ)^{1/2}$ there is a universal decay ${\cal F}\sim\exp\big(\!-\!(πc/3)Lt^2/β(β^2+4t^2)\big)$. The effect of an irrelevant non-integrable perturbation of the CFT is to progressively broaden each revival at $t=nL/2$ by an amount $O(n^{1/2})$.

Some Results on Mutual Information of Disjoint Regions in Higher Dimensions

We consider the mutual Renyi information I^n(A,B)=S^n_A+S^n_B-S^n_{AUB} of disjoint compact spatial regions A and B in the ground state of a d+1-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), in the limit when the separation r between A and B is much greater than their sizes R_{A,B}. We show that in general I^n(A,B)\sim C^n_AC^n_B(R_AR_B/r^2)^a, where a the smallest sum of the scaling dimensions of operators whose product has the quantum numbers of the vacuum, and the constants C^n_{A,B} depend only on the shape of the regions and universal data of the CFT. For a free massless scalar field, where 2x=d-1, we show that C^2_AR_A^{d-1} is proportional to the capacitance of a thin conducting slab in the shape of A in d+1-dimensional electrostatics, and give explicit formulae for this when A is the interior of a sphere S^{d-1} or an ellipsoid. For spherical regions in d=2 and 3 we obtain explicit results for C^n for all n and hence for the leading term in the mutual information by taking n->1. We also compute a universal logarithmic correction to the area law for the Renyi entropies of a single spherical region for a scalar field theory with a small mass.

Logarithmic conformal field theories as limits of ordinary CFTs and some physical applications

We describe an approach to logarithmic conformal field theories as limits of sequences of ordinary conformal field theories with varying central charge c. Logarithmic behaviour arises from degeneracies in the spectrum of scaling dimensions at certain values of c. The theories we consider are all invariant under some internal symmetry group, and logarithmic behaviour occurs when the decomposition of the physical observables into irreducible operators becomes singular. Examples considered are quenched random magnets using the replica formalism, self-avoiding walks as the n->0 of the O(n) model, and percolation as the limit Q->1 of the Potts model. In these cases we identify logarithmic operators and pay particular attention to how the c->0 paradox is resolved and how the b-parameter is evaluated. We also show how this approach gives information on logarithmic behaviour in the extended Ising model, uniform spanning trees and the O(-2) model. Most of our results apply to general dimensionality. We also consider massive logarithmic theories and, in two dimensions, derive sum rules for the effective central charge and the b-parameter.

Entanglement negativity in extended systems: A field theoretical approach

We report on a systematic approach for the calculation of the negativity in the ground state of a one-dimensional quantum field theory. The partial transpose rho_A^{T_2} of the reduced density matrix of a subsystem A=A_1 U A_2 is explicitly constructed as an imaginary-time path integral and from this the replicated traces Tr (rho_A^{T_2})^n are obtained. The logarithmic negativity E= log||rho_A^{T_2}|| is then the continuation to n->1 of the traces of the even powers. For pure states, this procedure reproduces the known results. We then apply this method to conformally invariant field theories in several different physical situations for infinite and finite systems and without or with boundaries. In particular, in the case of two adjacent intervals of lengths L1, L2 in an infinite system, we derive the result E\sim(c/4) ln(L1 L2/(L1+L2)), where c is the central charge. For the more complicated case of two disjoint intervals, we show that the negativity depends only on the harmonic ratio of the four end-points and so is manifestly scale invariant. We explicitly calculate the scale-invariant functions for the replicated traces in the case of the CFT for the free compactified boson, but we have not so far been able to obtain the n->1 continuation for the negativity even in the limit of large compactification radius. We have checked all our findings against exact numerical results for the harmonic chain which is described by a non-compactified free boson.

Corner contribution to percolation cluster numbers

We study the number of clusters in two-dimensional (2d) critical percolation, N_Gamma, which intersect a given subset of bonds, Gamma. In the simplest case, when Gamma is a simple closed curve, N_Gamma is related to the entanglement entropy of the critical diluted quantum Ising model, in which Gamma represents the boundary between the subsystem and the environment. Due to corners in Gamma there are universal logarithmic corrections to N_Gamma, which are calculated in the continuum limit through conformal invariance, making use of the Cardy-Peschel formula. The exact formulas are confirmed by large scale Monte Carlo simulations. These results are extended to anisotropic percolation where they confirm a result of discrete holomorphicity.

Entanglement negativity in quantum field theory

We develop a systematic method to extract the negativity in the ground state of a 1+1 dimensional relativistic quantum field theory, using a path integral formalism to construct the partial transpose rho_A^{T_2} of the reduced density matrix of a subsystem A=A1 U A2, and introducing a replica approach to obtain its trace norm which gives the logarithmic negativity E=ln||ρ_A^{T_2}||. This is shown to reproduce standard results for a pure state. We then apply this method to conformal field theories, deriving the result E\sim(c/4) ln(L1 L2/(L1+L2)) for the case of two adjacent intervals of lengths L1, L2 in an infinite system, where c is the central charge. For two disjoint intervals it depends only on the harmonic ratio of the four end points and so is manifestly scale invariant. We check our findings against exact numerical results in the harmonic chain.

Measuring entanglement using quantum quenches

We show that block entanglement entropies in one-dimensional systems close to a quantum critical point can in principle be measured in terms of the population of low-lying energy levels following a certain type of local quantum quench.

An integrable modification of the critical Chalker-Coddington network model

We consider the Chalker-Coddington network model for the Integer Quantum Hall Effect, and examine the possibility of solving it exactly. In the supersymmetric path integral framework, we introduce a truncation procedure, leading to a series of well-defined two-dimensional loop models, with two loop flavours. In the phase diagram of the first-order truncated model, we identify four integrable branches related to the dilute Birman-Wenzl-Murakami braid-monoid algebra, and parameterised by the loop fugacity $n$. In the continuum limit, two of these branches (1,2) are described by a pair of decoupled copies of a Coulomb-Gas theory, whereas the other two branches (3,4) couple the two loop flavours, and relate to an $SU(2)_r \times SU(2)_r / SU(2)_{2r}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) coset model for the particular values $n= -2\cos[π/(r+2)]$ where $r$ is a positive integer. The truncated Chalker-Coddington model is the $n=0$ point of branch 4. By numerical diagonalisation, we find that its universality class is neither an analytic continuation of the WZW coset, nor the universality class of the original Chalker-Coddington model. It constitutes rather an integrable, critical approximation to the latter.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals in conformal field theory II

We continue the study of the entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals in conformal field theories that we started in J. Stat. Mech. (2009) P11001. We compute Trρ_A^n for any integer n for the Ising universality class and the final result is expressed as a sum of Riemann-Siegel theta functions. These predictions are checked against existing numerical data. We provide a systematic method that gives the full asymptotic expansion of the scaling function for small four-point ratio (i.e. short intervals). These formulas are compared with the direct expansion of the full results for free compactified boson and Ising model. We finally provide the analytic continuation of the first term in this expansion in a completely analytic form.

The Ubiquitous 'c': from the Stefan-Boltzmann Law to Quantum Information

I discuss various aspects of the role of the conformal anomaly number c in 2- and 1+1-dimensional critical behaviour: its appearance as the analogue of Stefan's constant, its fundamental role in conformal field theory, in the classification of 2d universality classes, and as a measure of quantum entanglement, among other topics.

Corrections to scaling for block entanglement in massive spin-chains

We consider the Renyi entropies S_n in one-dimensional massive integrable models diagonalizable by means of corner transfer matrices (as Heisenberg and Ising spin chains). By means of explicit examples and using the relation of corner transfer matrix with the Virasoro algebra, we show that close to a conformal invariant critical point, when the correlation length xi is finite but large, the corrections to the scaling are of the unusual form xi^(-x/n), with x the dimension of a relevant operator in the conformal theory. This is reminiscent of the results for gapless chains and should be valid for any massive one-dimensional model close to a conformal critical point.

Quantum Network Models and Classical Localization Problems

A review is given of quantum network models in class C which, on a suitable 2d lattice, describe the spin quantum Hall plateau transition. On a general class of graphs, however, many observables of such models can be mapped to those of a classical walk in a random environment, thus relating questions of quantum and classical localization. In many cases it is possible to make rigorous statements about the latter through the relation to associated percolation problems, in both two and three dimensions.

Quantum quench in interacting field theory: a self-consistent approximation

We study a composite quantum quench of the energy gap and the interactions in the interacting ϕ^4 model using a self-consistent approximation. Firstly we review the results for free theories where a quantum quench of the energy gap or mass leads for long times to stationary behaviour with thermal characteristics. An exception to this rule is the 2d case with zero mass after the quench. In the composite quench however we find that the effect of the interactions in our approximation is simply to effectively change the value of the mass. This means on the one hand that the interacting model also exhibits the same stationary behaviour and on the other hand that this is now true even for the massless 2d case.

Unusual Corrections to Scaling in Entanglement Entropy

We present a general theory of the corrections to the asymptotic behaviour of the Renyi entropies which measure the entanglement of an interval A of length L with the rest of an infinite one-dimensional system, in the case when this is described by a conformal field theory of central charge c. These can be due to bulk irrelevant operators of scaling dimension x>2, in which case the leading corrections are of the expected form L^{-2(x-2)} for values of n close to 1. However for n>x/(x-2) corrections of the form L^{2-x-x/n} and L^{-2x/n} arise and dominate the conventional terms. We also point out that the last type of corrections can also occur with x less than 2. They arise from relevant operators induced by the conical space-time singularities necessary to describe the reduced density matrix. These agree with recent analytic and numerical results for quantum spin chains. We also compute the effect of marginally irrelevant bulk operators, which give a correction (log L)^{-2}, with a universal amplitude. We present analogous results for the case when the interval lies at the end of a semi-infinite system.

Universal amplitude ratios of two-dimensional percolation from field theory

We complete the determination of the universal amplitude ratios of two-dimensional percolation within the two-kink approximation of the form factor approach. For the cluster size ratio, which has for a long time been elusive both theoretically and numerically, we obtain the value 160.2, in good agreement with the lattice estimate 162.5 +/- 2 of Jensen and Ziff.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals in conformal field theory

We study the entanglement of two disjoint intervals in the conformal field theory of the Luttinger liquid (free compactified boson). Trρ_A^n for any integer n is calculated as the four-point function of a particular type of twist fields and the final result is expressed in a compact form in terms of the Riemann-Siegel theta functions. In the decompactification limit we provide the analytic continuation valid for all model parameters and from this we extract the entanglement entropy. These predictions are checked against existing numerical data.

Entanglement entropy and conformal field theory

We review the conformal field theory approach to entanglement entropy. We show how to apply these methods to the calculation of the entanglement entropy of a single interval, and the generalization to different situations such as finite size, systems with boundaries, and the case of several disjoint intervals. We discuss the behaviour away from the critical point and the spectrum of the reduced density matrix. Quantum quenches, as paradigms of non-equilibrium situations, are also considered.
