Geodesics in Open Universes

We present the geodesics on homogeneous and isotropic negatively curved spaces in a simple form suitable for application to cosmological problems. We discuss how the patterns in the microwave sky of anisotropic homogeneous universes can be predicted qualitatively by looking at the invariances that generate their three-geometries.

Flat Spots: topological signatures of an open universe in COBE sky maps

We investigate the behaviour of light rays in an open universe with a partly periodic horn topology. The geodesics can be solved exactly and the periodic topology creates characteristic new effects in temperature maps of the microwave background. Large flat regions appear in COBE sky maps even when multiple images of astronomical sources are unobservable.

Spatially Homogeneous String Cosmologies

We determine the most general form of the antisymmetric $H$-field tensor derived from a purely time-dependent potential that is admitted by all possible spatially homogeneous cosmological models in 3+1-dimensional low-energy bosonic string theory. The maximum number of components of the $H$ field that are left arbitrary is found for each homogeneous cosmology defined by the Bianchi group classification. The relative generality of these string cosmologies is found by counting the number of independent pieces of Cauchy data needed to specify the general solution of Einstein's equations. The hierarchy of generality differs significantly from that characteristic of vacuum and perfect-fluid cosmologies. The degree of generality of homogeneous string cosmologies is compared to that of the generic inhomogenous solutions of the string field equations.

Inhomogeneous String Cosmologies

We present exact inhomogeneous and anisotropic cosmological solutions of low-energy string theory containing dilaton and axion fields. The spacetime metric possesses cylindrical symmetry. The solutions describe ever-expanding universes with an initial curvature singularity and contain known homogeneous solutions as subcases. The asymptotic form of the solution near the initial singularity has a spatially-varying Kasner-like form. The inhomogeneous axion and dilaton fields are found to evolve quasi-homogeneously on scales larger than the particle horizon. When the inhomogeneities enter the horizon they oscillate as non-linear waves and the inhomogeneities attentuate. When the inhomogeneities are small they behave like small perturbations of homogeneous universes. The manifestation of duality and the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions are investigated.

Cosmological Limits on Slightly Skew Stresses

We present an analysis of the cosmological evolution of matter sources with small anisotropic pressures. This includes electric and magnetic fields, collisionless relativistic particles, gravitons, antisymmetric axion fields in low-energy string cosmologies, spatial curvature anisotropies, and stresses arising from simple topological defects. We calculate their evolution during the radiation and dust eras of an almost isotropic universe. In many interesting cases the evolution displays a special critical behaviour created by the non-linear evolution of the pressure and expansion anisotropies. The isotropy of the microwave background is used to place strong limits of order $Ω_{a0}\leq 5\times 10^{-6}Δ(1+z_{rec})^{-Δ}$on the possible contribution of these matter sources to the total density of the universe, where $1\leq Δ\leq 3$ characterises the anisotropic stress. The present abundance of an anisotropic stress which becomes non-relativistic at a characteristic low-energy scale is also calculated. We explain why the limits obtained from primordial nucleosynthesis are generally weaker than those imposed by the microwave background isotropy. The effect of inflation on these stresses is also calculated.

Constraints on a Primordial Magnetic Field

We derive an upper limit of $B_0<3.4\times 10^{-9}(Ω_0h_{50}^2)^{1/2}$ Gauss on the present strength of any primordial homogeneous magnetic field. The microwave background anisotropy created by cosmological magnetic fields is calculated in the most general flat and open anisotropic cosmologies containing expansion-rate and 3-curvature anisotropies. Our limit is derived from a statistical analysis of the 4-year Cosmic Background Explorer data for anisotropy patterns characteristic of homogeneous anisotropy averaged over all possible sky orientations with respect to the COBE receiver. The limits we obtain are considerably stronger than those imposed by primordial nucleosynthesis and ensure that other magnetic field effects on the microwave background structure are unobservably small.

Exact Inhomogeneous Cosmological Models

We present new exact inhomogeneous vacuum cosmological solutions of Einstein's equations. They provide new information about the nature of general cosmological solutions to Einstein's equations.

Kantowski-Sachs String Cosmologies

We present new exact solutions of the low-energy-effective-action string equations with both dilaton $ϕ$ and axion $H$ fields non-zero. The background universe is of Kantowski-Sachs type. We consider the possibility of a pseudoscalar axion field $h$ ($H=e^ϕ(dh)^{*}$) that can be either time or space dependent. The case of time-dependent $h$ reduces to that of a stiff perfect-fluid cosmology. For space-dependent $h$ there is just one non-zero time-space-space component of the axion field $H$, and this corresponds to a distinguished direction in space which prevents the models from isotropising. Also, in the latter case, both the axion field $H$ and its tensor potential $B$ ($H=dB$) are dependent on time and space yet the energy-momentum tensor remains time-dependent as required by the homogeneity of the cosmological model.

The Behaviour Of Cosmological Models With Varying-G

We provide a detailed analysis of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes in a wide range of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We apply solution-generating methods to three parametrised classes of scalar-tensor theory which lead naturally to general relativity in the weak-field limit. We restrict the parameters which specify these theories by the requirements imposed by the weak-field tests of gravitation theories in the solar system and by the requirement that viable cosmological solutions be obtained. We construct a range of exact solutions for open, closed, and flat isotropic universes containing matter with equation of state $p\leq \frac{1}{3}ρ$ and in vacuum. We study the range of early and late-time behaviours displayed, examine when there is a `bounce' at early times, and expansion maxima in closed models.

Inflationary Models with Logarithmic Potentials

We examine inflationary universe models driven by scalar fields with logarithmic potentials of the form $V(ϕ) = V_0 ϕ^p(\ln ϕ)^q$. Combining the slow-roll approximation with asymptotic techniques, we identify regions of the potential where inflation may occur and obtain analytic expressions for the evolution of the field and the metric in these cases. We construct a family of exact solutions to the equations of motion with potentials resembling the above form and demonstrate their inflationary nature; deflationary and conflationary cosmological behaviours are also defined and identified. Finally, a computation of scalar density and tensor gravitational perturbations produced by the model is presented.

Generalised Scalar Field Potentials and Inflation

We investigate the range of inflationary universe models driven by scalar fields possessing a general interaction potential of the form $V(ϕ) = V_0 ϕ^n \exp(-λϕ^m)$. Power-law, de Sitter and intermediate inflationary universes emerge as special cases together with several new varieties of inflation. Analysing the behaviour of these models at the extrema of $ϕ$ we derive sufficient constraints on the $m$ - $n$ parameter space such that inflation may occur as both an early and late-time phenomenon. We also compute the scalar and tensor perturbations produced in the model and compare these results with recent observations.

Formalising the Slow-Roll Approximation in Inflation

The meaning of the inflationary slow-roll approximation is formalised. Comparisons are made between an approach based on the Hamilton-Jacobi equations, governing the evolution of the Hubble parameter, and the usual scenario based on the evolution of the potential energy density. The vital role of the inflationary attractor solution is emphasised, and some of its properties described. We propose a new measure of inflation, based upon contraction of the comoving Hubble length as opposed to the usual e-foldings of physical expansion, and derive relevant formulae. We introduce an infinite hierarchy of slow-roll parameters, and show that only a finite number of them are required to produce results to a given order. The extension of the slow-roll approximation into an analytic slow-roll expansion, converging on the exact solution, is provided. Its role in calculations of inflationary dynamics is discussed. We explore rational-approximants as a method of extending the range of convergence of the slow-roll expansion up to, and beyond, the end of inflation.
