Length-scale estimates for the LANS-alpha equations in terms of the Reynolds number

Foias, Holm & Titi \cite{FHT2} have settled the problem of existence and uniqueness for the 3D \lans equations on periodic box $[0,L]^{3}$. There still remains the problem, first introduced by Doering and Foias \cite{DF} for the Navier-Stokes equations, of obtaining estimates in terms of the Reynolds number $\Rey$, whose character depends on the fluid response, as opposed to the Grashof number, whose character depends on the forcing. $\Rey$ is defined as $\Rey = U\ell/ν$ where $U$ is a bounded spatio-temporally averaged Navier-Stokes velocity field and $\ell$ the characteristic scale of the forcing. It is found that the inverse Kolmogorov length is estimated by $\ellλ_{k}^{-1} \leq c (\ell/α)^{1/4}\Rey^{5/8}$. Moreover, the estimate of Foias, Holm & Titi for the fractal dimension of the global attractor, in terms of $\Rey$, comes out to be $$ d_{F}(\mathcal{A}) \leq c \frac{V_αV_{\ell}^{1/2}}{(L^{2}λ_{1})^{9/8}} \Rey^{9/4} $$ where $V_α = (L/(\ellα)^{1/2})^{3}$ and $V_{\ell} = (L/\ell)^{3}$. It is also shown that there exists a series of time-averaged inverse squared length scales whose members, $\left<κ_{n,0}^2\right>$, %, are related to the $2n$th-moments of the energy spectrum when $α\to 0$. are estimated as $(n\geq 1)$ $$ \ell^{2}\left<κ_{n,0}^2\right> \leq c_{n,α}V_α^{\frac{n-1}{n}} \Rey^{{11/4} - \frac{7}{4n}}(\ln\Rey)^{\frac{1}{n}} + c_{1}\Rey(\ln\Rey) . $$ The upper bound on the first member of the hierarchy $\left<κ_{1,0}^2\right>$ coincides with the inverse squared Taylor micro-scale to within log-corrections.

Quaternions and particle dynamics in the Euler fluid equations

Vorticity dynamics of the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations is cast into a quaternionic representation governed by the Lagrangian evolution of the tetrad consisting of the growth rate and rotation rate of the vorticity. In turn, the Lagrangian evolution of this tetrad is governed by another that depends on the pressure Hessian. Together these form the basis for a direction of vorticity theorem. Moreover, in this representation, fluid particles carry ortho-normal frames whose Lagrangian evolution in time are shown to be directly related to the Frenet-Serret equations for a vortex line. The frame dynamics suggest an elegant Lagrangian relation regarding the pressure Hessian tetrad. The equations for ideal MHD are similarly considered.

K"ahler Geometry and the Navier-Stokes Equations

We study the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations of incompressible hydrodynamics in two and three spatial dimensions and show how the constraint of incompressiblility leads to equations of Monge--Ampère type for the stream function, when the Laplacian of the pressure is known. In two dimensions a Kähler geometry is described, which is associated with the Monge--Ampère problem. This Kähler structure is then generalised to `two-and-a-half dimensional' flows, of which Burgers' vortex is one example. In three dimensions, we show how a generalized Calabi--Yau structure emerges in a special case.

A Bound on Mixing Efficiency for the Advection-Diffusion Equation

An upper bound on the mixing efficiency is derived for a passive scalar under the influence of advection and diffusion with a body source. For a given stirring velocity field, the mixing efficiency is measured in terms of an equivalent diffusivity, which is the molecular diffusivity that would be required to achieve the same level of fluctuations in the scalar concentration in the absence of stirring, for the same source distribution. The bound on the equivalent diffusivity depends only on the functional "shape" of both the source and the advecting field. Direct numerical simulations performed for a simple advecting flow to test the bounds are reported.
