Potential Sensitivity of Gamma-Ray Burster Observations to Wave Dispersion in Vacuo

The recent confirmation that at least some gamma-ray bursters (GRBs) are indeed at cosmological distances raises the possibility that observations of these could provide interesting constraints on the fundamental laws of physics. Here we demonstrate that the fine-scale time structure and hard spectra of GRB emissions are very sensitive to the possible dispersion of electromagnetic waves in vacuo with velocity differences $δv \sim E/E_{\QG}$, as suggested in some approaches to quantum gravity. A simple estimate shows that GRB measurements might be sensitive to a dispersion scale $E_{QG}$ comparable to the Planck energy scale $E_{P} \sim 10^{19}$ GeV, sufficient to test some of these theories, and we outline aspects of an observational programme that could address this goal.

Estimates of Long-distance Contributions to the $B_s \to γγ$ Decay

We present first calculations of new long-distance contributions to $B_s \to γγ$ decay due to intermediate $D_s$ and $D_s^*$ meson states. The relevant $γ$ vertices are estimated using charge couplings and transition moment couplings. Within our uncertainties, we find that these long-distance contributions could be comparable to the known short-distance contributions. Since they have different Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix-element factors, there may be an interesting possibility of observing CP violation in this decay.

World-Sheet formulation of M theory

We first review the interpretation of world-sheet defects as $D$ branes described by a critical theory in 11 dimensions, that we interpret as $M$ theory. We then show that $D$-brane recoil induces dynamically an anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space-time background, with criticality restored by a twelfth time-like dimension described by a Liouville field. Local physics in the bulk of this AdS$_{11}$ may be described by an $Osp(1|32,R) \otimes Osp(1|32,R)$ topological gauge theory (TGT), with non-local boundary states in doubleton representations. We draw analogies with structures previously exhibited in two-dimensional black-hole models. Wilson loops of `matter' in the TGT may be described by an effective string action, and defect condensation may yield string tension and cause a space-time metric to appear.

Toward the M(F)--Theory Embedding of Realistic Free-Fermion Models

We construct a Landau-Ginzburg model with the same data and symmetries as a $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold that corresponds to a class of realistic free-fermion models. Within the class of interest, we show that this orbifolding connects between different $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold models and commutes with the mirror symmetry. Our work suggests that duality symmetries previously discussed in the context of specific $M$ and $F$ theory compactifications may be extended to the special $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold that characterizes realistic free-fermion models.

Natural Candidates for Superheavy Dark Matter in String and M Theory

We reconsider superheavy dark matter candidates in string and M theory, in view of the possibility that inflation might generate superheavy particles with an abundance close to that required for a near-critical Universe. We argue that cryptons - stable or metastable bound states of matter in the hidden sector - are favoured over other possible candidates in string or $M$ theory, such as the Kaluza-Klein states associated with extra dimensions. We exhibit a specific string model that predicts cryptons as hidden-sector bound states weighing $\sim 10^{12}$ GeV, and discuss their astrophysical observability.

Hierarchies of R-violating interactions from Family Symmetries

We investigate the possibility of constructing models of R-violating LQD Yukawa couplings using a single U(1) flavour-symmetry group and supermultiplet charge assignments that are compatible with the known hierarchies of quark and lepton masses. The mismatch of mass and current eigenstates inferred from the known charged-current mixing induces the propagation of strong phenomenological constraints on some R-violating couplings to many others. Applying these constraints, we look for flavour-symmetry models that are consistent with different squark-production hypotheses devised to explain the possible HERA large-Q^2 anomaly. The e^+ d -> stop interpretation of the HERA data is accommodated relatively easily, at the price of postulating an extra parity. The e^+ s -> stop interpretation of the events requires models to have only small (2,3) mixing in the down quark sector. The e^+ d -> scharm mechanism cannot be accommodated without large violations of squark-mass universality, due to the very strong experimental constraints on R-violating operators. We display a model in which baryon decay due to dangerous dimension-five operators is automatically suppressed.

Physics at Future Colliders

After a brief review of the Big Issues in particle physics, we discuss the contributions to resolving that could be made by various planned and proposed future colliders. These include future runs of LEP and the Fermilab Tevatron collider, B factories, RHIC, the LHC, a linear electron-positron collider, an electron-proton collider in the LEP/LHC tunnel, a muon collider and a future larger hadron collider (FLHC). The Higgs boson and supersymmetry are used as benchmarks for assessing their capabilities. The LHC has great capacities for precision measurements as well as exploration, but also shortcomings where the complementary strengths of a linear electron-positron collider would be invaluable. It is not too soon to study seriously possible subsequent colliders.

Hunting Down Interpretations of the HERA Large-Q^2 data

Possible interpretations of the HERA large-Q^2 data are reviewed briefly. The possibility of statistical fluctuations cannot be ruled out, and it seems premature to argue that the H1 and ZEUS anomalies are incompatible. The data cannot be explained away by modifications of parton distributions, nor do contact interactions help. A leptoquark interpretation would need a large tau-q branching ratio. Several R-violating squark interpretations are still viable despite all the constraints, and offer interesting experimental signatures, but please do not hold your breath.

Irreversible Time Flow in a Two-Dimensional Dilaton Black Hole with Matter

We show that an exact solution of two-dimensional dilaton gravity with matter discovered previously exhibits an irreversible temporal flow towards flat space with a vanishing cosmological constant. This time flow is induced by the back reaction of matter on the space-time geometry. We demonstrate that the system is not in equilibrium if the cosmological constant is non-zero, whereas the solution with zero cosmological constant is stable. The flow of the system towards this stable end-point is derived from the renormalization-group flow of the Zamolodchikov function. This behaviour is interpreted in terms of non-critical Liouville string, with the Liouville field identified as the target time.

Decoherent Scattering of Light Particles in a D-Brane Background

We discuss the scattering of two light particles in a D-brane background. It is known that, if one light particle strikes the D brane at small impact parameter, quantum recoil effects induce entanglement entropy in both the excited D brane and the scattered particle. In this paper we compute the asymptotic `out' state of a second light particle scattering off the D brane at large impact parameter, showing that it also becomes mixed as a consequence of quantum D-brane recoil effects. We interpret this as a non-factorizing contribution to the superscattering operator S-dollar for the two light particles in a Liouville D-brane background, that appears when quantum D-brane excitations are taken into account.

M-Theory Model-Building and Proton Stability

We study the problem of baryon stability in M theory, starting from realistic four-dimensional string models constructed using the free-fermion formulation of the weakly-coupled heterotic string. Suitable variants of these models manifest an enhanced custodial gauge symmetry that forbids to all orders the appearance of dangerous dimension-five baryon-decay operators. We exhibit the underlying geometric (bosonic) interpretation of these models, which have a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ orbifold structure similar, but not identical, to the class of Calabi-Yau threefold compactifications of M and F theory investigated by Voisin and Borcea. A related generalization of their work may provide a solution to the problem of proton stability in M theory.

Calculations of One-Loop Supersymmetric Corrections to Large-E_T Jet Cross Sections

We have calculated the one-loop supersymmetric corrections to the 2 to 2 parton scattering subprocesses antiq q to antiq q, antiq q to g g, g q to g q and g g to g g, including form-factor corrections and box diagrams with internal squarks and gluinos of arbitrary mass. In general, these exhibit cusps at the corresponding direct-channel sparticle thresholds. We use these calculations to make numerical estimates of the possible threshold effects at the Fermilab Tevatron collider and at the LHC, which depend on the rapidity range selected, but can be as large as a few percent. These effects are diluted in the integrated large-E_T cross section, where they are negative.

Phenomenology of LEP 2 Physics

Various aspects of physics at LEP 2 are reviewed from a phenomenological point of view. We first discuss the search for Higgs bosons, which might be relatively light if indications from the precision electroweak data and supersymmetry are correct. Then WW physics is discussed, with particular emphasis on the problems in measuring mW by the kinematic reconstruction of events with purely hadronic final states. Finally, possible manifestations of supersymmetry are reviewed, comparing different scenarios for the lightest supersymmetric particle, which may or may not be stable. Possible scenarios for R violation at HERA and future searches for supersymmetry at the LHC are also mentioned briefly.

Vacuum Fluctuations and Decoherence in Mesoscopic and Microscopic Systems

We discuss recent experimental evidence of decoherence in a laboratory mesoscopic system in a cavity, from which we draw analogies with the decoherence that we argue is induced by microscopic quantum-gravity fluctuations in the space-time background. We emphasize the parallel rôles played in both cases by dissipation through non-trivial vacuum fluctuations that trigger the collapse of an initially coherent quantum state. We review a phenomenological parametrization of possible effects of this kind in the neutral kaon system, where they would induce CPT violation, and describe some epxerimental tests.

Pade Approximants, Optimal Renormalization Scales, and Momentum Flow in Feynman Diagrams

We show that the Pade Approximant (PA) approach for resummation of perturbative series in QCD provides a systematic method for approximating the flow of momentum in Feynman diagrams. In the large-$β_0$ limit, diagonal PA's generalize the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) scale-setting method to higher orders in a renormalization scale- and scheme-invariant manner, using multiple scales that represent Neubert's concept of the distribution of momentum flow through a virtual gluon. If the distribution is non-negative, the PA's have only real roots, and approximate the distribution function by a sum of delta-functions, whose locations and weights are identical to the optimal choice provided by the Gaussian quadrature method for numerical integration. We show how the first few coefficients in a perturbative series can set rigorous bounds on the all-order momentum distribution function, if it is positive. We illustrate the method with the vacuum polarization function and the Bjorken sum rule computed in the large-$β_0$ limit.

M Theory from World-Sheet Defects in Liouville String

We have argued previously that black holes may be represented in a D-brane approach by monopole and vortex defects in a sine-Gordon field theory model of Liouville dynamics on the world sheet. Supersymmetrizing this sine-Gordon system, we find critical behaviour in 11 dimensions, due to defect condensation that is the world-sheet analogue of D-brane condensation around an extra space-time dimension in M theory. This supersymmetric description of Liouville dynamics has a natural embedding within a 12-dimensional framework suggestive of F theory.

Constraints on Neutralino Dark Matter from LEP 2 and Cosmology

A significant lower limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino χcan be obtained by combining the results from sparticle searches at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 172 GeV with cosmological considerations, if it is assumed that the χis stable. Exclusion domains from slepton searches close m_χ\sim 0 loopholes that were left open by previous lower-energy LEP searches for charginos and neutralinos, leading to the lower limit $m_χ\ga 17$ GeV. The constraints on supersymmetric parameter space are strengthened significantly if LEP constraints on supersymmetric Higgs bosons are taken into account, and further if the relic neutralino density is required to fall within the range favoured by astrophysics and cosmology. These bounds are considerably strengthened if universality at the GUT scale is assumed for soft supersymmetry-breaking scalar masses, including those of the Higgs bosons. In this case, the Higgs searches play a dramatic role, and we find that m_χ\ga 40 GeV. Furthermore, we find that if tanβ\la 1.7 for μ<0, or tanβ\la 1.4 for μ>0, the cosmological relic density is too large for all values of m_χ.

Quantum Decoherence in a D-Foam Background

Within the general framework of Liouville string theory, we construct a model for quantum D-brane fluctuations in the space-time background through which light closed-string states propagate. The model is based on monopole and vortex defects on the world sheet, which have been discussed previously in a treatment of 1+1-dimensional black-hole fluctuations in the space-time background, and makes use of a T-duality transformation to relate formulations with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. In accordance with previous general arguments, we derive an open quantum-mechanical description of this D-brane foam which embodies momentum and energy conservation and small mean energy fluctuations. Quantum decoherence effects appear at a rate consistent with previous estimates.
