Dynamics inside the attracting basins of some skew products

Polynomial skew products in $\mathbb{C}^2$ are maps of the form $F(z,w)=(P(z),Q(z,w))$, where $P$ and $Q$ are polynomials. Their local dynamics have been widely investigated. In this paper, we study the global dynamics inside Fatou components of some skew products. We consider all the inverse images in a Fatou component of a given point and use the Kobayashi metric to measure the distance between points. In the cases we consider, there are always arbitrarily large Kobayashi balls in the complement of these inverse sets.

Equidistribution Measures of infinite entropy for Transcendental Functions

In the 1980s Lyubich and Freire-Lopes-Mañé proved that for any rational function of degree d \geq 2, both preimages and periodic points equidistribute to the unique measure of maximal entropy log(d). Their results provide a fundamental understanding of the dynamics of iterated rational functions, and have since been generalized to many different contexts, including classes of higher-dimensional polynomial and rational maps. In the current paper we depart from the algebraic category and aim to prove analogous statements for transcendental functions in the complex plane, which have infinite topological entropy. We introduce two different methods for constructing invariant measures in the transcendental setting, namely via embedded symbolic dynamical systems and via transfer operators associated to suitably chosen weights. In the latter case we isolate three properties of the weights -normality, tightness, and irreducibility- which together imply convergence to an invariant measure. We provide examples for each method, given by three classes of transcendental entire functions: disjoint-type maps, strongly polynomial-like maps, and a class of maps inspired by Baker's construction of multiply connected wandering domains and by Bishop's construction of Julia sets of Hausdorff dimension 1, which we call Baker-Bishop maps. For each of these classes we prove that with respect to carefully chosen weights, preimages equidistribute to an invariant mixing probability measure of infinite entropy. For Baker-Bishop maps and disjoint-type maps we also prove equidistribution of periodic points. In contrast to the rational setting, the measures we construct are not unique: by varying the weights one obtains infinitely many distinct measures.

Generating all Ahlfors currents by a single entire curve

Let \(X\) be a compact complex manifold possessing the \emph{Runge approximation property on discs}, meaning that every holomorphic map from a closed disc into \(X\) is approximable by a global holomorphic map from \(\mathbb{C}\). We construct an entire curve \(F : \mathbb{C} \to X\) such that the associated family of concentric holomorphic discs \(\{F|_{\overline{\mathbb{D}}_r}\}_{r>0}\) generates all Ahlfors currents on \(X\), thereby settling a conjecture of Sibony.

Backtracking New Q-Newton's method for finding roots of meromorphic functions in 1 complex variable: Global convergence, and local stable/unstable curves

In this paper, we research more in depth properties of Backtracking New Q-Newton's method (recently designed by the third author), when used to find roots of meromorphic functions. If $f=P/Q$, where $P$ and $Q$ are polynomials in 1 complex variable z with $°(P)>°(Q)$, we show the existence of an exceptional set $\mathcal{E}\subset\mathbf{C}$, which is contained in a countable union of real analytic curves in $\mathbf{R}^2=\mathbf{C}$, so that the following statements A and B hold. Here, $\{z_n\}$ is the sequence constructed by BNQN with an initial point $z_0$ which is not a pole of $f$. A) If $z_0\in\mathbf{C}\backslash\mathcal{E}$, then $\{z_n\}$ converges to a root of $f$. B) If $z_0\in \mathcal{E}$, then $\{z_n\}$ converges to a critical point - but not a root - of $f$. Experiments seem to indicate that in general, even when $f$ is a polynomial, the set $\mathcal{E}$ is not contained in a finite union of real analytic curves. We provide further results relevant to whether locally $\mathcal{E}$ is contained in a finite number of real analytic curves. A similar result holds for general meromorphic functions. Moreover, unlike previous work, here we do not require that the parameters of BNQN are random, or that the meromorphic function $f$ is generic. Based on the theoretical results, we explain (both rigorously and heuristically) of what observed in experiments with BNQN, in previous works by the authors. In particular, the dynamics of BNQN (an iterative method) seems to have some striking similarities to Newton's method (a continuous method) and the classical Poincaré-Bendixon theorem for differentiable real dynamical systems on the complex plane. This is the more interesting given that discrete versions of Newton's method (e.g. Relaxed Newton's method) does not behave this way.

Increasing sequences of complex manifolds with uniform squeezing constants and their Bergman spaces

For $d\geq 2$, we discuss $d$-dimensional complex manifolds $M$ that are the increasing union of bounded open sets $M_n$'s of $\mathbb{C}^d$ with a common uniform squeezing constant. The description of $M$ is given in terms of the corank of the infinitesimal Kobayashi metric of $M$, which is shown to be identically constant on $M$. The main result of this article says that if $M$ has full Kobayashi corank, then $M$ can be written as an increasing union of the unit ball; if $M$ has zero Kobayashi corank, then $M$ has a bounded realization with a uniform squeezing constant; and if $M$ has an intermediate Kobayashi corank, then $M$ has a local weak vector bundle structure. The above description of $M$ is used to show that the dimension of the Bergman space of $M \subseteq \mathbb{C}^d$ is either zero or infinity. This settles Wiegerinck's conjecture for those pseudoconvex domains in higher dimensions that are increasing union of bounded domains with a common uniform squeezing constant.

Density in weighted Bergman spaces and Bergman completeness of Hartogs domains

We study the density of functions which are holomorphic in a neighbourhood of the closure $\overlineΩ$ of a bounded non-smooth pseudoconvex domain $Ω$, in the Bergman space $ H^2(Ω,φ)$ with a plurisubharmonic weight $φ$. As an application, we show that the Hartogs domain $$ Ω_α: = \{(z,w) \in D\times \C: |w|< δ^α_D(z) \}, \ \ \ α>0, $$ where $D\subset \subset \C$ and $δ_D$ denotes the boundary distance, is Bergman complete if and only if every boundary point of $D$ is non-isolated.

Strong localization of invariant metrics

A quantitative version of strong localization of the Kobayashi, Azukawa and Sibony metrics, as well as of the squeezing function, near a plurisubharmonic peak boundary point of a domain in $\Bbb C^n$ is given. As an application, the behavior of these metrics near a strictly pseudoconvex boundary point is studied. A weak localization of the three metrics and the squeezing function is also given near a plurisubharmonic antipeak boundary point.

Dynamics of transcendental Hénon maps III: Infinite entropy

Very little is currently known about the dynamics of non-polynomial entire maps in several complex variables. The family of transcendental Hénon maps offers the potential of combining ideas from transcendental dynamics in one variable, and the dynamics of polynomial Hénon maps in two. Here we show that these maps all have infinite topological and measure theoretic entropy. The proof also implies the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits of any order greater than two.

Weighted $L^2$ version of Mergelyan and Carleman approximation

We study the density of polynomials in $H^2(E,φ)$, the space of square integrable functions with respect to $e^{-φ}dm$ and holomorphic on the interior of $E$ in $\mathbb{C}$, where $φ$ is a subharmonic function and $dm$ is a measure on $E$. We give a result where $E$ is the union of a Lipschitz graph and a Carathéodory domain, that we state as a weighted $L^2$-version of the Mergelyan theorem. We also prove a weighted $L^2$-version of the Carleman theorem. Keywords: Mergelyan theorem, Carleman theorem, Weighted $L^2$- spaces, Rectifiable non-Lipschitz arc

A note on pseudoconvex hypersurfaces of infinite type in $\mathbb C^n$

The purpose of this article is to prove that there exists a real smooth pseudoconvex hypersurface germ $(M,p)$ of D'Angelo infinite type in $\mathbb C^{n+1}$ such that it does not admit any (singular) holomorphic curve in $\mathbb C^{n+1}$ tangent to $M$ at $p$ to infinite order.

Dynamics of transcendental Hénon maps-II

Transcendental Hénon maps are the natural extensions of the well investigated complex polynomial Hénon maps to the much larger class of holomorphic automorphisms. We prove here that transcendental Hénon maps always have non-trivial dynamical behavior, namely that they always admit both periodic and escaping orbits, and that their Julia sets are non-empty and perfect.

Weighted-$L^2$ polynomial approximation in $\mathbb{C}$

We study the density of polynomials in $H^2(Ω,e^{-φ})$, the space of square integrable holomorphic functions in a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}$, where $φ$ is a subharmonic function. In particular, we prove that the density holds in Carathéodory domains for any subharmonic function $φ$ in a neighborhood of $\overlineΩ$. In non-Carathéodory domains, we prove that the density depends on the weight function, giving examples.

Weighted approximation in $\mathbb{C}$

We prove that if $\{ φ_j\}_j$ is a sequence of subharmonic functions which are increasing to some subharmonic function $φ$ in $\mathbb{C}$, then the union of all the weighted Hilbert spaces $H(φ_j)$ is dense in the weighted Hilbert space $H(φ)$.

Squeezing functions and Cantor Sets

We construct "large" Cantor sets whose complements resemble the unit disk arbitrarily well from the point of view of the squeezing function, and we construct "large" Cantor sets whose complements do not resemble the unit disk from the point of view of the squeezing function. Finally we show that complements of Cantor sets arising as Julia sets of quadratic polynomials have degenerate squeezing functions, despite of having Hausdorff dimension arbitrarily close to two.

Flat bundles over some compact complex manifolds

We construct examples of flat fiber bundles over the Hopf surface such that the total spaces have no pseudoconvex neighborhood basis, admit a complete Kähler metric, or are hyperconvex but have no nonconstant holomorphic functions. For any compact Riemannian surface of positive genus, we construct a flat $\mathbb P^1$ bundle over it and a Stein domain with real analytic bundary in it whose closure does not have pseudoconvex neighborhood basis. For a compact complex manifold with positive first Betti number, we construct a flat disc bundle over it such that the total space is hyperconvex but admits no nonconstant holomorphic functions.
