Recent Progress in AdS/CFT

The study of AdS/CFT (or gauge/gravity) duality has been one of the most active and illuminating areas of research in string theory over the past decade. The scope of its relevance and the insights it is providing seem to be ever expanding. In this talk I briefly describe some of the attempts to explore how the duality works for maximally supersymmetric systems.

The Early Years of String Theory: A Personal Perspective

This article surveys some of the highlights in the development of string theory through the first superstring revolution in 1984. The emphasis is on topics in which the author was involved, especially the observation that critical string theories provide consistent quantum theories of gravity and the proposal to use string theory to construct a unified theory of all fundamental particles and forces.

The Scientific Contributions of Joel Scherk

Joel Scherk (1946--1980) was an important early contributor to the development of string theory. Together with various collaborators, he made numerous profound and influential contributions to the subject throughout the decade of the 1970s. On the occasion of a conference at the Ecole Normale Superieure in 2000 that was dedicated to the memory of Joel Scherk I gave a talk entitled "Reminiscences of Collaborations with Joel Scherk". The present article, an expanded version of that one, also discusses work in which I was not involved.

Studies of the ABJM Theory in a Formulation with Manifest SU(4) R-Symmetry

We examine the three-dimensional N = 6 superconformal Chern--Simons theory with U(N) X U(N) gauge symmetry, which was recently constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis, and Maldacena (ABJM). Using a formulation with manifest SU(4) R-symmetry and no auxiliary fields, we verify in complete detail both the Poincare supersymmetry and the conformal supersymmetry of the action. Together, these imply the complete OSp(6|4) superconformal symmetry of the theory. The potential, which is sixth order in scalar fields, is recast as a sum of squares.

Ghost-Free Superconformal Action for Multiple M2-Branes

The Bagger--Lambert construction of N = 8 superconformal field theories (SCFT) in three dimensions is based on 3-algebras. Three groups of researchers recently realized that an arbitrary semisimple Lie algebra can be incorporated by using a suitable Lorentzian signature 3-algebra. The SU(N) case is a candidate for the SCFT describing coincident M2-branes. However, these theories contain ghost degrees of freedom, which is unsatisfactory. We modify them by gauging certain global symmetries. This eliminates the ghosts from these theories while preserving all of their desirable properties. The resulting theories turn out to be precisely equivalent to N = 8 super Yang--Mills theories.

N = 8 Superconformal Chern--Simons Theories

A Lagrangian description of a maximally supersymmetric conformal field theory in three dimensions was constructed recently by Bagger and Lambert (BL). The BL theory has SO(4) gauge symmetry and contains scalar and spinor fields that transform as 4-vectors. We verify that this theory has OSp(8|4) superconformal symmetry and that it is parity conserving despite the fact that it contains a Chern--Simons term. We describe several unsuccessful attempts to construct theories of this type for other gauge groups and representations. This experience leads us to conjecture the uniqueness of the BL theory. Given its large symmetry, we expect this theory to play a significant role in the future development of string theory and M-theory.

Decoupling Supergravity from the Superstring

We consider the conditions necessary for obtaining perturbative maximal supergravity in d dimensions as a decoupling limit of type II superstring theory compactified on a (10 -- d)-torus. For dimensions d = 2 and d = 3 it is possible to define a limit in which the only finite-mass states are the 256 massless states of maximal supergravity. However, in dimensions d > 3 there are infinite towers of additional massless and finite-mass states. These correspond to Kaluza--Klein charges, wound strings, Kaluza--Klein monopoles or branes wrapping around cycles of the toroidal extra dimensions. We conclude that perturbative supergravity cannot be decoupled from string theory in dimensions d > 3. In particular, we conjecture that pure N = 8 supergravity in four dimensions is in the Swampland.

String Theory: Progress and Problems

String theory builds on the great legacy of Yukawa and Tomonaga: New degrees of freedom and control of the UV are two important themes. This talk will give an overview of some of the progress and some of the unsolved problems that characterize string theory today. It is divided into two parts: (1) Connecting String Theory to the Real World; (2) Gauge Theory/String Theory Duality. Two other major subjects, which I will omit, are Black Holes in String Theory and The Impact of String Theory on Mathematics.

Superconformal Chern-Simons Theories

We explore the possibilities for constructing Lagrangian descriptions of three-dimensional superconformal classical gauge theories that contain a Chern-Simons term, but no kinetic term, for the gauge fields. Classes of such theories with N = 1 and N = 2 supersymmetry are found. However, interacting theories of this type with N = 8 supersymmetry do not exist.

The Generalized Stieltjes Transform and Its Inverse

The generalized Stieltjes transform (GST) is an integral transform that depends on a parameter $ρ> 0$. In previous work a convenient form of the inverse transformation was derived for the case $ρ= 3/2$. This paper generalizes that result to all $ρ> 0$. It is a well-known fact that the GST can be formulated as an iterated Laplace transform, and that therefore its inverse can be expressed as an iterated inverse Laplace transform. The form of the inverse transform derived here is a one-dimensional integral that is considerably simpler.

The Three-String Vertex for a Plane-Wave Background

The three string vertex for Type IIB superstrings in a maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background can be constructed in a light-cone gauge string field theory formalism. The detailed formula contains certain Neumann coefficients, which are functions of a momentum fraction y and a mass parameter μ. This paper reviews the derivation of useful explicit expressions for these Neumann coefficients generalizing flat-space (μ= 0) results obtained long ago. These expressions are then used to explore the large μasymptotic behavior, which is required for comparison with dual perturbative gauge theory results. The asymptotic formulas, exact up to exponentially small corrections, turn out to be surprisingly simple.

Quantizing String Theory in AdS_5 X S^5: Beyond the pp-Wave

In a certain kinematic limit, where the effects of spacetime curvature (and other background fields) greatly simplify, the light-cone gauge world-sheet action for a type IIB superstring on AdS_5 x S^5 reduces to that of a free field theory. It has been conjectured by Berenstein, Maldacena, and Nastase that the energy spectrum of this string theory matches the dimensions of operators in the appropriately defined large R-charge large-N_c sector of N=4 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory in four dimensions. This holographic equivalence is thought to be exact, independent of any simplifying kinematic limits. As a step toward verifying this larger conjecture, we have computed the complete set of first curvature corrections to the spectrum of light-cone gauge string theory that arises in the expansion of AdS_5 x S^5 about the plane-wave limit. The resulting spectrum has the complete dependence on lambda = g_YM^2 N_c; corresponding results in the gauge theory are known only to second order in lambda. We find precise agreement to this order, including the N=4 extended supermultiplet structure. In the process, we demonstrate that the complicated schemes put forward in recent years for defining the Green--Schwarz superstring action in background Ramond-Ramond fields can be reduced to a practical (and correct) method for quantizing the string.

Explicit Formulas for Neumann Coefficients in the Plane-Wave Geometry

We obtain explicit formulas for the Neumann coefficients and associated quantities that appear in the three-string vertex for type IIB string theory in a plane-wave background, for any value of the mass parameter mu. The derivation involves constructing the inverse of a certain infinite-dimensional matrix, in terms of which the Neumann coefficients previously had been written only implicitly. We derive asymptotic expansions for large mu and find unexpectedly simple results, which are valid to all orders in 1/mu. Using BMN duality, these give predictions for certain gauge theory quantities to all orders in the modified 't Hooft coupling lambda'. A specific example is presented.

Comments on Superstring Interactions in a Plane-Wave Background

The three string vertex for Type IIB superstrings in a maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background is investigated. Specifically, we derive a factorization theorem for the Neumann coefficients that generalizes a flat-space result that was obtained some 20 years ago. The resulting formula is used to explore the leading large mu asymptotic behavior, which is relevant for comparison with dual gauge theory results.

Comments on Born-Infeld Theory

The low-energy effective action of supersymmetric D-brane systems consists of two terms, one of which is of the Born-Infeld type and one of which is of the Chern-Simons type. I briefly review the status of our understanding of these terms for both the Abelian and non-Abelian cases.
