The Classification of Graphs on $8$ vertices with Coinciding Zero Forcing number and Maximum Nullity

We study the minimum rank of a (simple, undirected) graph, which is the minimum rank among all matrices in a space determined by the graph. We determine the exact set of graphs on eight vertices for which the nullity of a minimum rank matrix does not coincide with a bound determined by the zero forcing number of a graph. Although our goal was to determine which eight-vertex graphs satisfy maximum nullity equal to the zero forcing number, we also established several additional methods to assist in the computation of minimum rank for general graphs.

Reconfiguration of Minimum PSD Forcing Sets and Minimum Skew Forcing Sets

Reconfiguration graphs provide a way to represent relationships among solutions to a problem, and have been studied in many contexts. We investigate the reconfiguration graphs corresponding to minimum PSD forcing sets and minimum skew forcing sets. We present results for the structure and realizability of certain graph classes as token exchange and token sliding reconfiguration graphs. Additionally, we use a universal approach to establish structural properties for the reconfiguration graphs of many common graph parameters under these reconfiguration rules. Finally, we compare results on reconfiguration graphs for zero forcing variants.

Compatible Forts and Maximum Nullity of a Graph

We consider bounds on maximum nullity of a graph via transversal numbers of compatible collections of forts. Results include generalizations of theorems from symmetric to combinatorially symmetric matrices, special bases of matrix nullspaces derived from transversal sets, and examples of issues that arise when considering only minimal forts and how to avoid them. We also show an important difference between constructing symmetric and combinatorially symmetric matrices associated to a graph whose nullspaces are supported on collections of disjoint forts.

The Spark of Symmetric Matrices Described by a Graph

We investigate the sparsity of null vectors of real symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal pattern of zero and nonzero entries is described by the adjacencies of a graph. We use the definition of the spark of a matrix, the smallest number of nonzero coordinates of any null vector, to define the spark of a graph as the smallest possible spark of a corresponding matrix. We study connections of graph spark to well-known concepts including minimum rank, forts, orthogonal representations, Parter and Fiedler vertices, and vertex connectivity.

Fixed point groups of involutions of type $\mathrm{O}(\mathrm{q},k)$ over a field of characteristic two

For $\mathrm{O}(\mathrm{q},k)$, the orthogonal group over a field $k$ of characteristic 2 with respect to a quadratic form $\mathrm{q}$, we discuss the isomorphism classes of fixed points of involutions. When the quadratic space is either totally singular or nonsingular, a full classification of the isomorphism classes is given. We also give some implications of these results for a general quadratic space over a field of characteristic $2$.

On involutions of type $\mathrm{O}(\mathrm{q},k)$ over a field of characteristic two

In this article we study the involutions of $\mathrm{O}(V,\mathrm{q})$, an orthogonal group for a vector space $V$ with quadratic form $\mathrm{q}$ over a field of characteristic 2. The classification proceeds by discussing conjugacy classes of involutions arising as a product of transvections, involutions with respect to a hyperbolic space, and involutions acting nontrivially in the radical of $V$. We achieve a complete classification of the conjugacy classes of involutions when the quadratic space $(V,\mathrm{q})$ is non-defective, and conclude with a discussion of the defective case.

Isomorphism classes of $k$-involutions of algebraic groups of type $E_6$

Automorphisms of order $2$ are studied in order to understand generalized symmetric spaces. The groups of type $E_6$ we consider here can be realized as both the group of linear maps that leave a certain determinant invariant, and also as the identity component of the automorphism group of a class of structurable algebras known as Brown algebras. We will classify the $k$-involutions of these groups of type $E_6$ using aspects of both descriptions, and give detailed descriptions of representatives over certain fields including algebraically closed fields, $\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{F}_p$, and $\mathbb{Q}_p$.

Isomorphism classes of $k$-involutions of algebraic groups of type $F_4$

We continue the classification of isomorphism classes of k-involutions of exceptional algebraic groups. In this paper we classify k-involutions for split groups of type F4 over certain fields, and their fixed point groups. The classification of k-involutions is equivalent to the classification of symmetric k-varieties.

On involutions and generalized symmetric spaces of dicyclic groups

Let $G=\Dc_{n}$ be the dicyclic group of order $4n$. Let $φ$ be an automorphism of $G$ of order $k$. We describe $φ$ and the generalized symmetric space $Q$ of $G$ associated with $φ$. When $φ$ is an involution, we describe its fixed point group $H=G^φ$ along with the $H$-orbits and $G$-orbits of $Q$ corresponding to the action of $φ$-twisted conjugation.

Isomorphy classes of k-involutions of G_2

Isomorphy classes of k-involutions have been studied for their correspondence with generalized symmetric spaces of algebraic groups. This is a continuation of papers written by A.G. Helminck and collaborators that are regarding algebraic groups of classical type. Here we begin doing the same for algebraic groups of exceptional type.
