Backreaction in the future behavior of an expanding spacetime

We perform a rescaling analysis to analyze the future behavior of a class of $T^2$-symmetric vacuum spacetimes. We show that on the universal cover, there is $C^0$-convergence to a spatially homogeneous spacetime that does not satisfy the vacuum Einstein equations.

A Hilbert bundle description of differential K-theory

We give an infinite dimensional description of the differential K-theory of a manifold $M$. The generators are triples $[H, A, ω]$ where $H$ is a ${\bf Z}_2$-graded Hilbert bundle on $M$, $A$ is a superconnection on $H$ and $ω$ is a differential form on $M$. The relations involve eta forms. We show that the ensuing group is the differential K-group $\check{K}^0(M)$. In addition, we construct the pushforward of a finite dimensional cocycle under a proper submersion with a Riemannian structure. We give the analogous description of the odd differential K-group $\check{K}^1(M)$. Finally, we give a model for twisted differential K-theory.

Eigenvalue estimates and differential form Laplacians on Alexandrov spaces

We give upper bounds on the eigenvalues of the differential form Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold. The proof uses Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below. We also construct differential form Laplacians on Alexandrov spaces. Under a local biLipschitz assumption on the Alexandrov space, which is conjecturally always satisfied, we show that the differential form Laplacian has a compact resolvent. We identify its kernel with an intersection homology group.

On noncollapsed almost Ricci-flat 4-manifolds

We give topological conditions to ensure that a noncollapsed almost Ricci-flat 4-manifold admits a Ricci-flat metric. One sufficient condition is that the manifold is spin and has a nonzero A-hat genus. Another condition is that the fundamental group is infinite or, more generally, of sufficiently large cardinality.

On tangent cones in Wasserstein space

If M is a smooth compact Riemannian manifold, let P(M) denote the Wasserstein space of probability measures on M. If S is an embedded submanifold of M, and $μ$ is an absolutely continuous measure on S, then we compute the tangent cone of P(M) at $μ$.

An intrinsic parallel transport in Wasserstein space

If M is a smooth compact connected Riemannian manifold, let P(M) denote the Wasserstein space of probability measures on M. We describe a geometric construction of parallel transport of some tangent cones along geodesics in P(M). We show that when everything is smooth, the geometric parallel transport agrees with earlier formal calculations.

Ricci flow on quasiprojective manifolds II

We study the Ricci flow on complete Kaehler metrics that live on the complement of a divisor in a compact complex manifold. In earlier work, we considered finite-volume metrics which, at spatial infinity, are transversely hyperbolic. In the present paper we consider three different types of spatial asymptotics: cylindrical, bulging and conical. We show that in each case, the asymptotics are preserved by the Kaehler-Ricci flow. We address long-time existence, parabolic blowdown limits and the role of the Kaehler-Ricci flow on the divisor.

Ricci measure for some singular Riemannian metrics

We define the Ricci curvature, as a measure, for certain singular torsion-free connections on the tangent bundle of a manifold. The definition uses an integral formula and vector-valued half-densities. We give relevant examples in which the Ricci measure can be computed. In the time dependent setting, we give a weak notion of a Ricci flow solution on a manifold.

Locally Collapsed 3-Manifolds

We prove that a 3-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold which is locally collapsed, with respect to a lower curvature bound, is a graph manifold. This theorem was stated by Perelman and was used in his proof of the geometrization conjecture.

Geometrization of Three-Dimensional Orbifolds via Ricci Flow

A three-dimensional closed orientable orbifold (with no bad suborbifolds) is known to have a geometric decomposition from work of Perelman along with earlier work of Boileau-Leeb-Porti and Cooper-Hodgson-Kerckhoff. We give a new, logically independent, unified proof of the geometrization of orbifolds, using Ricci flow. Along the way we develop some tools for the geometry of orbifolds that may be of independent interest.

Collapsing with a lower bound on the curvature operator

Cheeger and Gromov showed that F-structures are related to collapse with a double-sided curvature bound. We define fibered F-structures and extend some of the Cheeger-Gromov results to the setting of collapse with a lower bound on the curvature operator.

Mean curvature flow in a Ricci flow background

Following work of Ecker, we consider a weighted Gibbons-Hawking-York functional on a Riemannian manifold-with-boundary. We compute its variational properties and its time derivative under Perelman's modified Ricci flow. The answer has a boundary term which involves an extension of Hamilton's Harnack expression for the mean curvature flow in Euclidean space. We also derive the evolution equations for the second fundamental form and the mean curvature, under a mean curvature flow in a Ricci flow background. In the case of a gradient Ricci soliton background, we discuss mean curvature solitons and Huisken monotonicity.

Ricci flow on quasiprojective manifolds

We consider the Kaehler-Ricci flow on complete finite-volume metrics that live on the complement of a divisor in a compact Kaehler manifold X. Assuming certain spatial asymptotics on the initial metric, we compute the singularity time in terms of cohomological data on X. We also give a sufficient condition for the singularity, if there is one, to be type-II.

Dimensional reduction and the long-time behavior of Ricci flow

If g(t) is a three-dimensional Ricci flow solution, with sectional curvatures that decay like the inverse of t and diameter that increases at most like the square root of t, then the pullback Ricci flow solution on the universal cover approaches a homogeneous expanding soliton.
