Quasi-circles through prescribed points

We show that in an L-annularly linearly connected, N-doubling, complete metric space, any n points lie on a K-quasi-circle, where K depends only on L, N and n. This implies, for example, that if G is a hyperbolic group that does not split over any virtually cyclic subgroup, then any geodesic line in G lies in a quasi-isometrically embedded copy of the hyperbolic plane.

Embedding relatively hyperbolic groups in products of trees

We show that a relatively hyperbolic group quasi-isometrically embeds in a product of finitely many trees if the peripheral subgroups do, and we provide an estimate on the minimal number of trees needed. Applying our result to the case of 3-manifolds, we show that fundamental groups of closed 3-manifolds have linearly controlled asymptotic dimension at most 8. To complement this result, we observe that fundamental groups of Haken 3-manifolds with non-empty boundary have asymptotic dimension 2.

Modulus and Poincaré inequalities on non-self-similar Sierpinski carpets

A carpet is a metric space homeomorphic to the Sierpinski carpet. We characterize, within a certain class of examples, non-self-similar carpets supporting curve families of nontrivial modulus and supporting Poincaré inequalities. Our results yield new examples of compact doubling metric measure spaces supporting Poincaré inequalities: these examples have no manifold points, yet embed isometrically as subsets of Euclidean space.

Assouad dimension of self-affine carpets

We calculate the Assouad dimension of the self-affine carpets of Bedford and McMullen, and of Lalley and Gatzouras. We also calculate the conformal Assouad dimension of those carpets that are not self-similar.

Conformal dimension and random groups

We give a lower and an upper bound for the conformal dimension of the boundaries of certain small cancellation groups. We apply these bounds to the few relator and density models for random groups. This gives generic bounds of the following form, where $l$ is the relator length, going to infinity. (a) $1 + 1/C < \Cdim(\bdry G) < C l / \log(l)$, for the few relator model, and (b) $1 + l / (C\log(l)) < \Cdim(\bdry G) < C l$, for the density model, at densities $d < 1/16$. In particular, for the density model at densities $d < 1/16$, as the relator length $l$ goes to infinity, the random groups will pass through infinitely many different quasi-isometry classes.

Spaces and groups with conformal dimension greater than one

We show that if a complete, doubling metric space is annularly linearly connected then its conformal dimension is greater than one, quantitatively. As a consequence, we answer a question of Bonk and Kleiner: if the boundary of a one-ended hyperbolic group has no local cut points, then its conformal dimension is greater than one.

Existence of quasi-arcs

We show that doubling, linearly connected metric spaces are quasi-arc connected. This gives a new and short proof of a theorem of Tukia.
