A Mapping Theorem for Topological Complexity

We give new lower bounds for the (higher) topological complexity of a space, in terms of the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of a certain auxiliary space. We also give new lower bounds for the rational topological complexity of a space, and more generally for the rational sectional category of a map, in terms of the rational category of a certain auxiliary space. We use our results to deduce consequences for the global (rational) homotopy structure of simply connected, hyperbolic finite complexes.

New lower bounds for the topological complexity of aspherical spaces

We show that the topological complexity of an aspherical space $X$ is bounded below by the cohomological dimension of the direct product $A\times B$, whenever $A$ and $B$ are subgroups of $π_1(X)$ whose conjugates intersect trivially. For instance, this assumption is satisfied whenever $A$ and $B$ are complementary subgroups of $π_1(X)$. This gives computable lower bounds for the topological complexity of many groups of interest (including semidirect products, pure braid groups, certain link groups, and Higman's acyclic four-generator group), which in some cases improve upon the standard lower bounds in terms of zero-divisors cup-length. Our results illustrate an intimate relationship between the topological complexity of an aspherical space and the subgroup structure of its fundamental group.

On the structure of co-Kähler manifolds

By the work of Li, a compact co-Kähler manifold $M$ is a mapping torus $K_φ$, where $K$ is a Kähler manifold and $φ$ is a Hermitian isometry. We show here that there is always a finite cyclic cover $\bar M$ of the form $\bar M \cong K \times S^1$, where $\cong$ is equivariant diffeomorphism with respect to an action of $S^1$ on $M$ and the action of $S^1$ on $K \times S^1$ by translation on the second factor. Furthermore, the covering transformations act diagonally on $S^1$, $K$ and are translations on the $S^1$ factor. In this way, we see that, up to a finite cover, all compact co-Kähler manifolds arise as the product of a Kähler manifold and a circle.

Spaces of Topological Complexity One

We prove that a space whose topological complexity equals 1 is homotopy equivalent to some odd-dimensional sphere. We prove a similar result, although not in complete generality, for spaces X whose higher topological complexity TC_n(X) is as low as possible, namely n-1.

On the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of symplectic manifolds and the Arnold conjecture

We prove that the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category $cat(M)$ of a closed symplectic manifold $(M, ω)$ equals the dimension $dim(M)$ provided that the symplectic cohomology class vanishes on the image of the Hurewicz homomorphism. This holds, in particular, when $π_2(M)=0$. The Arnold conjecture asserts that the number of fixed points of a Hamiltonian symplectomorphism of $M$ is greater than or equal to the number of critical points of some function on $M$. A modified form of the conjecture, replacing the latter quantity (via Lusternik-Schnirelmann theory) by $cup(M) + 1$, has been proved recently by various authors using techniques of Floer. The first author has also recently shown that the original form of the conjecture holds when $cat(M) =dim(M)$. Thus, this paper completes the proof of the original Arnold conjecture for closed symplectic manifolds with, for example, $π_2(M)=0$.
