Belyi map verification using certified path tracking

We provide an end-to-end workflow to rigorously compute the monodromy of Belyi maps from exact equations over number fields using certified homotopy continuation. We then apply this method at scale to certify the monodromy triples of Belyi maps in the $L$-functions and Modular Forms Database (LMFDB).

An orthogonal perspective on Gauss composition

We revisit Gauss composition over a general base scheme, with a focus on orthogonal groups. We show that the Clifford and norm functors provide an equivalence of stacks between binary quadratic modules and pseudoregular modules over quadratic algebras. As a consequence, we exhibit a composition law for coprimitive forms over a general base, including a universal version of Dirichlet composition. This perspective synthesizes the constructions of Kneser and Wood, reconciles algebraic and geometric approaches, and clarifies the role of orientations and the natural emergence of narrow class groups.

Computing class groups and unit groups in Magma

We describe the computation of class groups and unit groups of number fields as implemented in Magma (V2.29). After quickly reviewing the main algorithms based on factor bases, relation collection, and analytic class number evaluation, we distinguish their behavior across formalizable, rigorous, GRH-conditional, and heuristic regimes.

Explicit modularity of K3 surfaces with complex multiplication of large degree

We consider the transcendental motive of three K3 surfaces $X$ conjectured to have complex multiplication (CM). Under this assumption, we match these to explicit algebraic Hecke quasi-characters $\psi_X$, and CM abelian threefolds $A$. This provides substantial evidence that a power of $A$ corresponds to $X$ under the Kuga-Satake correspondence.

Hypergeometric Motives from Euler Integral Representations

We revisit certain one-parameter families of affine covers arising naturally from Euler's integral representation of hypergeometric functions. We introduce a partial compactification of this family. We show that the zeta function of the fibers in the family can be written as an explicit product of $L$-series attached to nondegenerate hypergeometric motives and zeta functions of tori, twisted by Hecke Grossencharacters. This permits a combinatorial algorithm for computing the Hodge numbers of the family.

The constructive inverse Galois problem via Hilbert modular forms: realizing the transitive group 17T7

We show how Hilbert modular forms can be used in the constructive inverse Galois problem over the rationals. In particular, we prove that the transitive permutation group 17T7, isomorphic to a split extension of C_2 by PSL_2(FF_16), is a Galois group over the rationals and exhibit an explicit degree 17 polynomial with this Galois group. The group arises from the field of definition of the 2-torsion on an abelian fourfold with real multiplication defined over a real quadratic field; we find such a fourfold attached to a Hilbert modular form. Building upon work of Dembele, we describe a method for reconstructing a period matrix attached to a Hilbert modular form, and we use it to construct the 2-isogeny polynomial. We also rigorously identify the relevant fourfold as the Jacobian of a genus 4 Shimura curve and compute explicit equations for this curve.

On abelian varieties whose torsion is not self-dual

We construct infinitely many abelian surfaces A defined over the rational numbers such that, for a prime ell <= 7, the ell-torsion subgroup of A is not isomorphic as a Galois module to the ell-torsion subgroup of its dual. We do this by explicitly analyzing the action of the Galois group on the ell-adic Tate module and its reduction modulo ell.

Rational torsion points on abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication

Let $A$ be an abelian surface over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose geometric endomorphism ring is a maximal order in a non-split quaternion algebra. Inspired by Mazur's theorem for elliptic curves, we show that the torsion subgroup of $A(\mathbb{Q})$ is $12$-torsion and has order at most $18$. Under the additional assumption that $A$ is of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type, we give a complete classification of the possible torsion subgroups of $A(\mathbb{Q})$.

Kneser's method of neighbors

In a landmark paper published in 1957, Kneser introduced a method for enumerating classes in the genus of a definite, integral quadratic form. This method has been deeply influential, on account of its theoretical importance as well as its practicality. In this survey, we exhibit Kneser's method of neighbors and indicate some of its applications in number theory.

Monodromy groups of Jacobians with definite quaternionic multiplication

Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field. The connected monodromy field of $A$ is the minimal field over which the images of all the $\ell$-adic torsion representations have connected Zariski closure. We show that for all even $g \geq 4$, there exist infinitely many geometrically nonisogenous abelian varieties $A$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ of dimension $g$ where the connected monodromy field is strictly larger than the field of definition of the endomorphisms of $A$. Our construction arises from explicit families of hyperelliptic Jacobians with definite quaternionic multiplication.

Stickelberger's discriminant theorem for algebras

Stickelberger proved that the discriminant of a number field is congruent to 0 or 1 modulo 4. We generalize this to an arbitrary (not necessarily commutative) ring of finite rank over the integers using techniques from linear algebra. Our proof, which relies only on elementary matrix identities, is new even in the classical case.

Triangular modular curves of low genus

Triangular modular curves are a generalization of modular curves that arise from quotients of the upper half-plane by congruence subgroups of hyperbolic triangle groups. These curves also arise naturally as a source of Belyi maps with monodromy $\text{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ or $\text{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We present a computational approach to enumerate Borel-type triangular modular curves of low genus, and we carry out this enumeration for prime level and small genus.
