Constraints on DBI dark energy with chameleon mechanism

In this work, we investigate the Dirac--Born--Infeld (DBI) scalar field model with and without the inclusion of the chameleon mechanism in light of the latest cosmological observations. We constrain the model using data from Pantheon Plus, DES Y5, DESI DR2, and the compressed Planck likelihood. We consider an AdS throat of the form $f(\phi) = \lambda / \phi^4$ and a potential $V(\phi) = m_0^2 \phi^2 + m_1^2 \phi^4$. Our analysis shows that, for both cases, the mean value $m_1 \simeq 0$ suggests that the DBI field may lack significant self-interaction, with only an upper bound on $m_1$. The warp parameter is constrained to $\eta \geq 0$, while the chameleon coupling satisfies $\beta \leq 0$. No crossing of the phantom divide is observed under the assumed form of the warp factor and potential. We perform a statistical model comparison using the $\Delta \mathrm{AIC}$ relative to the $\Lambda$CDM model. Although the DBI model provides a slightly better fit to the data in terms of $\Delta \chi^2$, the improvement is negligible. Consequently, the DBI model is mildly disfavored for both the cases compared to the $\Lambda$CDM model.

Dynamical density functional theory based modelling of tissue dynamics: application to tumour growth

We present a theoretical framework based on an extension of dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) for describing the structure and dynamics of cells in living tissues and tumours. DDFT is a microscopic statistical mechanical theory for the time evolution of the density distribution of interacting many-particle systems. The theory accounts for cell pair-interactions, different cell types, phenotypes and cell birth and death processes (including cell division), in order to provide a biophysically consistent description of processes bridging across the scales, including describing the tissue structure down to the level of the individual cells. Analysis of the model is presented for a single species and a two-species cases, the latter aimed at describing competition between tumour and healthy cells. In suitable parameter regimes, model results are consistent with biological observations. Of particular note, divergent tumour growth behaviour, mirroring metastatic and benign growth characteristics, are shown to be dependent on the cell pair-interaction parameters.

Non-topological Cycloops

We propose a mechanism for the creation of cosmic string loops with dynamically stabilised windings in the internal space. Assuming a velocity correlations regime in the post-inflationary epoch, such windings are seen to arise naturally in string networks prior to loop formation. The angular momentum of the string in the compact space may then be sufficient to ensure that the windings remain stable after the loop chops off from the network, even if the internal manifold is simply connected. For concreteness we embed our model in the Klebanov-Strassler geometry, which provides a natural mechanism for brane inflation, as well a being one of the best understood compactification schemes in type IIB string theory. We see that the interaction of angular momentum with the string tension causes the loop to oscillate between phases of expansion and contraction. This, in principle, should give rise to a distinct gravitational wave signature, the future detection of which could provide indirect evidence for the existence of extra dimensions.

A Generalisation of the Nielsen-Olesen Vortex: Non-cylindrical strings in a modified Abelian-Higgs model

We modify the standard Abelian-Higgs model by introducing spatially-dependent couplings for the scalar and vector fields. We investigate static, non-cylindrically symmetric solutions of the resulting field equations and propose a pinch solution which interpolates between degenerate vacua along the string, labelled by $\pm |n|$. This configuration corresponds to a vortex which shrinks to Planck scale before re-emerging as an anti-vortex, resulting in the formation of a bead pair with one bead at either side of the intersection. The solution is then topologically stable. A key assumption is that quantities such as phase and winding number, along with those which depend on them like the magnetic flux, become undefined at the Planck scale so that regions of opposite winding may be joined via a Planck-sized segment of neutral string. Similarities between this solution and the extra-dimensional windings of strings in type IIB string theory are discussed and a correspondence between field theory and string theory parameters is suggested. The spatial-dependence of the field couplings is found to have a natural interpretation in the dual string picture and results from the variation of the winding radius, giving rise to a varying (effective) string coupling. An interesting result is an estimate of the Higgs mass (at critical coupling) in terms of the parameters which define the Klebanov-Strassler geometry and which, in principle, may be constrained by cosmological observations.

Towards an Observational Appraisal of String Cosmology

We review the current observational status of string cosmology when confronted with experimental datasets. We begin by defining common observational parameters and discuss how they are determined for a given model. Then we review the observable footprints of several string theoretic models, discussing the significance of various potential signals. Throughout we comment on present and future prospects of finding evidence for string theory in cosmology, and on significant issues for the future.

Thermodynamic Geometry and Type 0A Black Holes

In this note we study thermodynamic geometry of the type 0A black hole solution in string theory using a variety of different methods (Ruppeiner, Weinhold and Geometrothermodynamics). Our results indicate that the curvature invariants are finite for all physical solutions, suggesting that there is no phase transition. It is also found that the cutoff of the entropy, which is the singular limit of the theory, appears geometrically in the Weinhold picture as the thermodynamic cone itself.

Bounds on Tensor wave and Twisted Inflation

We study the bounds on tensor wave in a class of twisted inflation models where $D(4+2k)$-branes are wrapped on cycles in the compact manifold and wrap the KK-direction in the corresponding effective field theory. While the lower bound is found to be analogous to that in Type IIB models of brane inflation, the upper bound turns out to be significantly different. This is argued for a range of values for the parameter $g_s M$ satisfying the self-consistency relation and the WMAP data. Further, we observe that the wrapped $D8$-brane appears to be the most attractive from a cosmological perspective.

Gauge field back-reaction in Born Infeld cosmologies

In this paper, we investigate the back-reaction of $U(1)$ gauge fields into a class of inflationary settings. To be more precise, we employ a Bianchi-I geometry (taken as an anisotropic perturbation of a flat FRW model) within two types of Born-Infeld theories. Firstly we consider pure Born-Infeld electromagnetism. For either a constant or a $b(ϕ)$ coupling, inflationary trajectories are modified but anisotropies increase; In particular, for the former coupling we find that a quadratic inflaton potential, within a constant ratio for the scalar and gauge energy densities, does not induce sufficient inflation, while in the latter the back-reaction in the cosmology determines (from the tensor-scalar ratio) a narrow range where inflation can occur. A Dirac-Born-Infeld framework is afterwards analysed in both non-relativistic and relativistic regimes. In the former, for different cases of the coupling (richer with respect to mere BI setups) between scalar and gauge sectors, we find that inflationary trajectories are modified, with anisotropy increasing or decreasing. In particular, a tachyonic solution is studied, allowing for a non standard ratio between scalar and gauge matter densities, enhancing sufficient inflation, but with the anisotropy increasing. For the relativistic limit, inflationary trajectories are also modified and anisotropies increase faster than in the non-relativistic limit. Finally we discuss how magnetic seed fields could evolve in these settings.

String Necklaces and Primordial Black Holes from Type IIB Strings

We consider a model of static cosmic string loops in type IIB string theory, where the strings wrap cycles within the internal space. The strings are not topologically stabilised, however the presence of a lifting potential traps the windings giving rise to kinky cycloops. We find that PBH formation occurs at early times in a small window, whilst at late times we observe the formation of dark matter relics in the scaling regime. This is in stark contrast to previous predictions based on field theoretic models. We also consider the PBH contribution to the mass density of the universe, and use the experimental data to impose bounds on the string theory parameters.

Quintessence and phantom dark energy from ghost D-branes

We present a novel dark energy candidate, based upon the existence and dynamics of Ghost D-branes in a warped compactification of type IIB string theory. Gp-branes cancel the combined BPS sectors of the Dp-branes, while they preserve the same supersymmetries. We show that this scenario can naturally lead to either quintessence or phantom-like behaviors, depending on the form of the involved potentials and brane tension.

Non-relativistic Matrix Inflation

We reconsider a string theoretic inflationary model, where inflation is driven by $n$ multiple coincident $D3$-branes in the finite $n$ limit. We show that the finite $n$ action can be continued to the limit of large $n$, where it converges to the action for a wrapped $D5$-brane with $n$ units of U(1) flux. This provides an important consistency check of the scenario and allows for more control over certain back-reaction effects. We determine the most general form of the action for a specific sub-class of models and examine the non-relativistic limits of the theory where the branes move at speeds much less than the speed of light. The non-Abelian nature of the world-volume theory implies that the inflaton field is matrix valued and this results in modifications to the slow-roll parameters and Hubble-flow equations. A specific small field model of inflation is investigated where the branes move out of an AdS throat, and observational constraints are employed to place bounds on the background fluxes.

Weyl corrections to holographic conductivity

For conformal field theories which admit a dual gravitational description in anti-de Sitter space, electrical transport properties, such as conductivity and charge diffusion, are determined by the dynamics of a U(1) gauge field in the bulk and thus obey universality relations at the classical level due to the uniqueness of the Maxwell action. We analyze corrections to these transport parameters due to higher-dimension operators in the bulk action, beyond the leading Maxwell term, of which the most significant involves a coupling to the bulk Weyl tensor. We show that the ensuing corrections to conductivity and the diffusion constant break the universal relation with the U(1) central charge observed at leading order, but are nonetheless subject to interesting bounds associated with causality in the boundary CFT.

Higher order corrections to Heterotic M-theory inflation

We investigate inflation driven by $N$ dynamical five-branes in Heterotic M-theory using the scalar potential derived from the open membrane instanton sector. At leading order the resulting theory can be mapped to power law inflation, however more generally one may expect higher order corrections to be important. We consider a simple class of such corrections, which imposes tight bounds on the number of branes required for inflation.

Generalised DBI-Quintessence

We investigate the phase space of a quintessence theory governed by a generalised version of the DBI action, using a combination of numeric and analytic methods. The additional degrees of freedom lead to a vastly richer phase space structure, where the field covers the full equation of state parameter space; $-1 \le ω\le 1$. We find many non-trivial solution curves to the equations of motion which indicate that DBI quintessence is an interesting candidate for a viable k-essence model.

An alternative approach to tachyon cosmology

In this note we propose the use of an alternate action for the open string tachyon on a non-BPS $D3$-brane. At the classical level this action is precisely equivalent to the more commonly used DBI action, but involves an additional coupling to dynamical world-volume gravity. We find that, for a FRW metric, exponential expansion occurs provided that the cosmological constant is positive. For anti de-Sitter solutions we find a periodically bouncing universe, and there are no accelerating trajectories for a theory with no cosmological constant. In specific cases the acceleration is terminated by the condensation of the open string tachyon, leading to a canonical inflationary trajectory at late times.

Information geometry of asymptotically AdS black holes

We investigate thermodynamic geometries of two families of asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black holes, i.e. the Reissner-Nordström Anti-de Sitter in four dimensions and the BTZ black hole. It is found that the Anti-de Sitter space renders the geometry nontrivial (c.f. the Reissner-Nordström black hole in asymptotically flat background). The BTZ black hole's thermodynamic geometry is trivial despite the fact that it is characterized by the (negative) cosmological constant. As a matter of curiosity we compute thermodynamic geometry of these black holes regarding the cosmological constant as a true parameter but no physically significant results can be derived.

Gravitational Wave Constraints on Multi-Brane Inflation

A class of non-canonical inflationary models is identified, where the leading-order contribution to the non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation is determined by the sound speed of the fluctuations in the inflaton field. Included in this class of models is the effective action for multiple coincident branes in the finite n limit. The action for this configuration is determined using a powerful iterative technique, based upon the fundamental representation of SU(2). In principle the upper bounds on the tensor-scalar ratio that arise in the standard, single-brane DBI inflationary scenario can be relaxed in such multi-brane configurations if a large and detectable non-Gaussianity is generated. Moreover models with a small number of coincident branes could generate a gravitational wave background that will be observable to future experiments.

WEAKLY-coupled IIA Flux Compactifications

We study compactifications of type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau manifolds that are mirror to a subset of the type IIB LARGE-volume models. A combination of flux, alpha' corrections and non-perturbative effects stabilises the moduli in a non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum. This vacuum has the feature that the (ten-dimensional) string coupling is exponentially small which can naturally lead to a TeV supersymmetry breaking scale with an intermediate string scale. The AdS vacuum can be uplifted to a dS one through the introduction of D6 branes, and complex-structure modular inflation can be realised.
