An Improved Robin-Robin Coupling Method for Parabolic-Parabolic Interface Problems

We consider a loosely coupled, non-iterative Robin-Robin coupling method proposed and analyzed in [Numer. Algorithms, 99:921-948, 2025] for a parabolic-parabolic interface problem. We modify the first step of the scheme so that several error difference quantities remain higher order convergence without requiring additional assumptions. Numerical results are presented to support our findings.

Local L2-bounded commuting projections using discrete local problems on Alfeld splits

We construct projections onto the classical finite element spaces based on Lagrange, N\'ed\'elec, Raviart-Thomas, and discontinuous elements on shape-regular simplicial meshes. Our projections are defined locally, are bounded in the L2-norm, and commute with the corresponding differential operators. Such projections are a fundamental tool in finite element stability and error analysis. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, the present construction is the first in the literature where local $L^2$-stability is fully established. The cornerstone of our construction are local weight functions which are piecewise polynomials built using the Alfeld split of local patches from the original simplicial mesh. This way, the L2-stability of the projections is established by invoking discrete Poincar\'e inequalities on these local stars, for which we provide here an original, constructive proof. Another important novelty is that we extend the construction of the projections so as to preserve homogeneous boundary conditions on a subset of the domain boundary. Altogether, the material is presented using the language of vector calculus, and links to the formalism of finite element exterior calculus are provided.

Implicit-explicit Crank-Nicolson scheme for Oseen's equation at high Reynolds number

In this paper we continue the work on implicit-explicit (IMEX) time discretizations for the incompressible Oseen equations that we started in \cite{BGG23} (E. Burman, D. Garg, J. Guzm\`an, {\emph{Implicit-explicit time discretization for Oseen's equation at high Reynolds number with application to fractional step methods}}, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 61, 2859--2886, 2023). The pressure velocity coupling and the viscous terms are treated implicitly, while the convection term is treated explicitly using extrapolation. Herein we focus on the implicit-explicit Crank-Nicolson method for time discretization. For the discretization in space we consider finite element methods with stabilization on the gradient jumps. The stabilizing terms ensures inf-sup stability for equal order interpolation and robustness at high Reynolds number. Under suitable Courant conditions we prove stability of the implicit-explicit Crank-Nicolson scheme in this regime. The stabilization allows us to prove error estimates of order $O(h^{k+\frac12} + \tau^2)$. Here $h$ is the mesh parameter, $k$ the polynomial order and $\tau$ the time step. Finally we discuss some fractional step methods that are implied by the IMEX scheme. Numerical examples are reported comparing the different methods when applied to the Navier-Stokes' equations.

The Johnson-Krizek-Mercier elasticity element in any dimensions

Mixed methods for linear elasticity with strongly symmetric stresses of lowest order are studied in this paper. On each simplex, the stress space has piecewise linear components with respect to its Alfeld split (which connects the vertices to barycenter), generalizing the Johnson--Mercier two-dimensional element to higher dimensions. Further reductions in the stress space in the three-dimensional case (to 24 degrees of freedom per tetrahedron) are possible when the displacement space is reduced to local rigid displacements. Proofs of optimal error estimates of numerical solutions and improved error estimates via postprocessing and the duality argument are presented.

Low-order divergence-free approximations for the Stokes problem on Worsey-Farin and Powell-Sabin splits

We derive low-order, inf-sup stable and divergence-free finite element approximations for the Stokes problem using Worsey-Farin splits in three dimensions and Powell-Sabin splits in two dimensions. The velocity space simply consists of continuous, piecewise linear polynomials, where as the pressure space is a subspace of piecewise constants with weak continuity properties at singular edges (3D) and singular vertices (2D). We discuss implementation aspects that arise when coding the pressure space, and in particular, show that the pressure constraints can be enforced at an algebraic level.

Implicit-explicit multistep formulations for finite element discretisations using continuous interior penalty

We consider a finite element method with symmetric stabilisation for the discretisation of the transient convection--diffusion equation. For the time-discretisation we consider either the second order backwards differentiation formula or the Crank-Nicolson method. Both the convection term and the associated stabilisation are treated explicitly using an extrapolated approximate solution. We prove stability of the method and the $\tau^2 + h^{p+{\frac12}}$ error estimates for the $L^2$-norm under either the standard hyperbolic CFL condition, when piecewise affine ($p=1$) approximation is used, or in the case of finite element approximation of order $p \ge 1$, a stronger, so-called $4/3$-CFL, i.e. $\tau \leq C h^{4/3}$. The theory is illustrated with some numerical examples.

Estimation of the continuity constants for Bogovski\u{\i} and regularized Poincar\'e integral operators

We study the dependence of the continuity constants for the regularized Poincar\'e and Bogovski\u{\i} integral operators acting on differential forms defined on a domain $\Omega$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We, in particular, study the dependence of such constants on certain geometric characteristics of the domain when these operators are considered as mappings from (a subset of) $L^2(\Omega,\Lambda^\ell)$ to $H^1(\Omega,\Lambda^{\ell-1})$, $\ell \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$. For domains $\Omega$ that are star shaped with respect to a ball $B$ we study the dependence of the constants on the ratio $diam(\Omega)/diam(B)$. A program on how to develop estimates for higher order Sobolev norms is presented. The results are extended to certain classes of unions of star shaped domains.

Exact sequences on Worsey-Farin Splits

We construct several smooth finite element spaces defined on three--dimensional Worsey--Farin splits. In particular, we construct $C^1$, $H^1(\curl)$, and $H^1$-conforming finite element spaces and show the discrete spaces satisfy local exactness properties. A feature of the spaces is their low polynomial degree and lack of extrinsic supersmoothness at sub-simplices of the mesh. In the lowest order case, the last two spaces in the sequence consist of piecewise linear and piecewise constant spaces, and are suitable for the discretization of the (Navier-)Stokes equation.

Convergence of Lagrange finite elements for the Maxwell Eigenvalue Problem in 2D

We consider finite element approximations of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem in two dimensions. We prove, in certain settings, convergence of the discrete eigenvalues using Lagrange finite elements. In particular, we prove convergence in three scenarios: piecewise linear elements on Powell--Sabin triangulations, piecewise quadratic elements on Clough--Tocher triangulations, and piecewise quartics (and higher) elements on general shape-regular triangulations. We provide numerical experiments that support the theoretical results. The computations also show that, on general triangulations, the eigenvalue approximations are very sensitive to nearly singular vertices, i.e., vertices that fall on exactly two "almost" straight lines.

Obtaining higher-order Galerkin accuracy when the boundary is polygonally approximated

We study two techniques for correcting the geometrical error associated with domain approximation by a polygon. The first was introduced some time ago \cite{bramble1972projection} and leads to a nonsymmetric formulation for Poisson's equation. We introduce a new technique that yields a symmetric formulation and has similar performance. We compare both methods on a simple test problem.

Exact smooth piecewise polynomial sequences on Alfeld splits

We develop exact piecewise polynomial sequences on Alfeld splits in any spatial dimension and any polynomial degree. An Alfeld split of a simplex is obtained by connecting the vertices of an $n$-simplex with its barycenter. We show that, on these triangulations, the kernel of the exterior derivative has enhanced smoothness. Byproducts of this theory include characterizations of discrete divergence-free subspaces for the Stokes problem, commutative projections, and simple formulas for the dimensions of smooth polynomial spaces.

Cubic Lagrange elements satisfying exact incompressibility

We prove that an analog of the Scott-Vogelius finite elements are inf-sup stable on certain nondegenerate meshes for piecewise cubic velocity fields. We also characterize the divergence of the velocity space on such meshes. In addition, we show how such a characterization relates to the dimension of C^1 piecewise quartics on the same mesh.

Inf-sup stable finite elements on barycentric refinements producing divergence--free approximations in arbitrary dimensions

We construct several stable finite element pairs for the Stokes problem on barycentric refinements in arbitrary dimensions. A key feature of the spaces is that the divergence maps the discrete velocity space onto the the discrete pressure space; thus, when applied to models of incompressible flows, the pairs yield divergence-free velocity approximations. The key result is a local inf-sup stability that holds for any dimension and for any polynomial degree. With this result, we construct global divergence-free and stable pairs in arbitrary dimension and for any polynomial degree.

Analysis of the finite element method for the Laplace--Beltrami equation on surfaces with regions of high curvature using graded meshes

We derive error estimates for the piecewise linear finite element approximation of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on a bounded, orientable, $C^3$, surface without boundary on general shape regular meshes. As an application, we consider a problem where the domain is split into two regions: one which has relatively high curvature and one that has low curvature. Using a graded mesh we prove error estimates that do not depend on the curvature on the high curvature region. Numerical experiments are provided.

Chip-firing on general invertible matrices

We propose a generalization of the graphical chip-firing model allowing for the redistribution dynamics to be governed by any invertible integer matrix while maintaining the long term critical, superstable, and energy minimizing behavior of the classical model.
