Elementary Subalgebrs of Lie Algebras

We initiate the investigation of the projective varieties $\mathbb E(r,\mathfrak g)$ of elementary subalgebras of dimension $r$ of a ($p$-restricted) Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ for various $r \geq 1$. These varieties $\mathbb E(r,\mathfrak g)$ are the natural ambient varieties for generalized support varieties for restricted representations of $\mathfrak g$. We identify these varieties in special cases, revealing their interesting and varied geometric structures. We also introduce invariants for a finite dimensional $\mathfrak u(\mathfrak g)$-module $M$, the local $(r,j)$-radical rank and local $(r,j)$-socle rank, functions which are lower/upper semicontinuous on $\mathbb E(r,\mathfrak g)$. Examples are given of $\mathfrak u(\mathfrak g)$-modules for which some of these rank functions are constant.

Vector Bundles Associated to Lie Algebras

We introduce and investigate a functorial construction which associates coherent sheaves to finite dimensional (restricted) representations of a restricted Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. These are sheaves on locally closed subvarieties of the projective variety $\mathbb E(r,\mathfrak g)$ of elementary subalgebras of $\mathfrak g$ of dimension $r$. We show that representations of constant radical or socle rank studied in \cite{CFP3} which generalize modules of constant Jordan type lead to algebraic vector bundles on $\mathbb E(r,\mathfrak g)$. For $\mathfrak g = Lie(G)$, the Lie algebra of an algebraic group $G$, rational representations of $G$ enable us to realize familiar algebraic vector bundles on $G$-orbits of $\mathbb E(r, \mathfrak g)$.

Endotrivial Modules for the General Linear Group in a Nondefining Characteristic

Suppose that $G$ is a finite group such that $\operatorname{SL}(n,q)\subseteq G \subseteq \operatorname{GL}(n,q)$, and that $Z$ is a central subgroup of $G$. Let $T(G/Z)$ be the abelian group of equivalence classes of endotrivial $k(G/Z)$-modules, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic~$p$ not dividing $q$. We show that the torsion free rank of $T(G/Z)$ is at most one, and we determine $T(G/Z)$ in the case that the Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is abelian and nontrivial. The proofs for the torsion subgroup of $T(G/Z)$ use the theory of Young modules for $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ and a new method due to Balmer for computing the kernel of restrictions in the group of endotrivial modules.

Blocks and support varieties

The theory of support varieties gives a rich supply of examples of thick subcategories of the stable module category of a finite group algebra. We study direct sum decompositions of such categories. We give examples where there are finer decompositions than one might originally expect, and relate this to Linckelmann's theory of block varieties.

Thick subcategories of the bounded derived category of a finite group

A new proof of the classification for tensor ideal thick subcategories of the bounded derived category, and the stable category, of modular representations of a finite group is obtained. The arguments apply more generally to yield a classification of thick subcategories of the bounded derived category of an artinian complete intersection ring. One of the salient features of this work is that it takes no recourse to infinite constructions, unlike the previous proofs of these results.

Second cohomology for finite groups of Lie type

Let $G$ be a simple, simply-connected algebraic group defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$. Given a power $q = p^r$ of $p$, let $G(\mathbb{F}_q) \subset G$ be the subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points. Let $L(λ)$ be the simple rational $G$-module of highest weight $λ$. In this paper we establish sufficient criteria for the restriction map in second cohomology $H^2(G,L(λ)) \rightarrow H^2(G(\mathbb{F}_q),L(λ))$ to be an isomorphism. In particular, the restriction map is an isomorphism under very mild conditions on $p$ and $q$ provided $λ$ is less than or equal to a fundamental dominant weight. Even when the restriction map is not an isomorphism, we are often able to describe $H^2(G(\mathbb{F}_q),L(λ))$ in terms of rational cohomology for $G$. We apply our techniques to compute $H^2(G(\mathbb{F}_q),L(λ))$ in a wide range of cases, and obtain new examples of nonzero second cohomology for finite groups of Lie type.

First cohomology for finite groups of Lie type: simple modules with small dominant weights

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$, and let $G$ be a simple, simply connected algebraic group defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$. Given $r \geq 1$, set $q=p^r$, and let $G(\mathbb{F}_q)$ be the corresponding finite Chevalley group. In this paper we investigate the structure of the first cohomology group $H^1(G(\mathbb{F}_q),L(λ))$ where $L(λ)$ is the simple $G$-module of highest weight $λ$. Under certain very mild conditions on $p$ and $q$, we are able to completely describe the first cohomology group when $λ$ is less than or equal to a fundamental dominant weight. In particular, in the cases we consider, we show that the first cohomology group has dimension at most one. Our calculations significantly extend, and provide new proofs for, earlier results of Cline, Parshall, Scott, and Jones, who considered the special case when $λ$ is a minimal nonzero dominant weight.

Representations of elementary abelian p-groups and bundles on Grassmannians

We initiate the study of representations of elementary abelian $p$-groups via restrictions to truncated polynomial subalgebras of the group algebra generated by $r$ nilpotent elements, $k[t_1,..., t_r]/(t^p_1,..., t_r^p)$. We introduce new geometric invariants based on the behavior of modules upon restrictions to such subalgebras. We also introduce modules of constant radical and socle type generalizing modules of constant Jordan type and provide several general constructions of modules with these properties. We show that modules of constant radical and socle type lead to families of algebraic vector bundles on Grassmannians and illustrate our theory with numerous examples.

Endotrivial modules for finite groups schemes II

It is well known that if G is a finite group then the group of endotrivial modules is finitely generated. In this paper we prove that for an arbitrary finite group scheme G, and for any fixed integer n > 0, there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of endotrivial modules of dimension n. This provides evidence to support the speculation that the group of endotrivial modules for a finite group scheme is always finitely generated. The result also has some applications to questions about lifting and twisting the structure of endotrivial modules in the case that G is an infinitesimal group scheme associated to an algebraic group.

Finite generation of Tate cohomology

Let G be a finite group and let k be a field of characteristic p. Given a finitely generated indecomposable non-projective kG-module M, we conjecture that if the Tate cohomology $\HHHH^*(G, M)$ of G with coefficients in M is finitely generated over the Tate cohomology ring $\HHHH^*(G, k)$, then the support variety V_G(M) of M is equal to the entire maximal ideal spectrum V_G(k). We prove various results which support this conjecture. The converse of this conjecture is established for modules in the connected component of k in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver for kG, but it is shown to be false in general. It is also shown that all finitely generated kG-modules over a group G have finitely generated Tate cohomology if and only if G has periodic cohomology.

Endotrivial Modules for Finite Group Schemes

It is well known that if G is a finite group then the group of endotrivial modules is finitely generated. In this paper we investigate endotrivial modules over arbitrary finite group schemes. Our results can be applied to computing the endotrivial group for several classes of infinitesimal group schemes which include the Frobenius kernels of parabolic subgroups, and their unipotent radicals(for reductive algebraic groups). For G reductive, we also present a classification of simple, induced/Weyl and tilting modules (G-modules) which are endotrivial over the Frobenius kernel G_r of G.

Freyd's generating hypothesis with almost split sequences

Freyd's generating hypothesis for the stable module category of a non-trivial finite group G is the statement that a map between finitely generated kG-modules that belongs to the thick subcategory generated by k factors through a projective if the induced map on Tate cohomology is trivial. In this paper we show that Freyd's generating hypothesis fails for kG when the Sylow p-subgroup of G has order at least 4 using almost split sequences. By combining this with our earlier work, we obtain a complete answer to Freyd's generating hypothesis for the stable module category of a finite group. We also derive some consequences of the generating hypothesis.

Modules of constant Jordan type

We introduce the class of modules of constant Jordan type for a finite group scheme $G$ over a field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$. This class is closed under taking direct sums, tensor products, duals, Heller shifts and direct summands, and includes endotrivial modules. It contains all modules in an Auslander-Reiten component which has at least one module in the class. Highly non-trivial examples are constructed using cohomological techniques. We offer conjectures suggesting that there are strong conditions on a partition to be the Jordan type associated to a module of constant Jordan type.

The classification of torsion endo-trivial modules

This paper is a major step in the classification of endotrivial modules over p-groups. Let G be a finite p-group and k be a field of characteristic p. A kG-module M is an endo-trivial module if {\End_k(M)\cong k\oplus F} as kG-modules, where F is a free module. The classification of endo-trivial modules is the crucial step for understanding the more general class of endo-permutation modules. The endo-permutation modules play an important role in module theory, in particular as source modules, and in block theory where they appear in the description of source algebras. Endo-trivial modules are also important in the study of both derived equivalences and stable equivalences of group algebras and block algebras. The collection of isomorphism classes of endo-trivial modules modulo projectives is an abelian group under tensor product. The main result of this paper is that this group is torsion free except in the case that G is cyclic, quaternion or semi-dihedral. Hence for any p-group which is not cyclic, quaternion or semi-dihedral and any finitely generated kG-module M, if M \otimes_k M \otimes_k ... \otimes_k M \cong k \oplus P for some projective module P and some finite number of tensor products, then M \cong k \oplus Q for some projective module Q. The proof uses a reduction to the cases in which G is an extraspecial or almost extraspecial p-group, proved in a previous paper of the authors, and makes extensive use of the theory of support varieties for modules.
