Solution of the classical Yang--Baxter equation with an exotic symmetry, and integrability of a multi-species boson tunneling model

Solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation provide a systematic method to construct integrable quantum systems in an algebraic manner. A Lie algebra can be associated with any solution of the classical Yang--Baxter equation, from which commuting transfer matrices may be constructed. This procedure is reviewed, specifically for solutions without skew-symmetry. A particular solution with an exotic symmetry is identified, which is not obtained as a limiting expansion of the usual Yang--Baxter equation. This solution facilitates the construction of commuting transfer matrices which will be used to establish the integrability of a multi-species boson tunneling model. The model generalises the well-known two-site Bose-Hubbard model, to which it reduces in the one-species limit. Due to the lack of an apparent reference state, application of the algebraic Bethe Ansatz to solve the model is prohibitive. Instead, the Bethe Ansatz solution is obtained by the use of operator identities and tensor product decompositions.

Two-site Bose-Hubbard model with nonlinear tunneling: classical and quantum analysis

The extended Bose-Hubbard model for a double-well potential with atom-pair tunneling is studied. Starting with a classical analysis we determine the existence of three different quantum phases: self-trapping, phase-locking and Josephson states. From this analysis we built the parameter space of quantum phase transitions between degenerate and non-degenerate ground states driven by the atom-pair tunneling. Considering only the repulsive case, we confirm the phase transition by the measure of the energy gap between the ground state and the first excited state. We study the structure of the solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for a small number of particles. An inspection of the roots for the ground state suggests a relationship to the physical properties of the system. By studying the energy gap we find that the profile of the roots of the Bethe ansatz equations is related to a quantum phase transition.

An integrable case of the p+ip pairing Hamiltonian interacting with its environment

We consider a generalisation of the p+ip pairing Hamiltonian with external interaction terms. These terms allow for the exchange of particles between the system and its environment. As a result the u(1) symmetry associated with conservation of particle number, present in the p+ip Hamiltonian, is broken. Nonetheless the generalised model is integrable. We establish integrability using the Boundary Quantum Inverse Scattering Method, with one of the reflection matrices chosen to be non-diagonal. We also derive the corresponding Bethe Ansatz Equations, the roots of which parametrise the exact solution for the energy spectrum.

Exact solution of the p+ip Hamiltonian revisited: duality relations in the hole-pair picture

We study the exact Bethe Ansatz solution of the p+ip Hamiltonian in a form whereby quantum numbers of states refer to hole-pairs, rather than particle-pairs used in previous studies. We find an asymmetry between these approaches. For the attractive system states in the strong pairing regime take the form of a quasi-condensate involving two distinct hole-pair creation operators. An analogous feature is not observed in the particle-pair picture.

Ground-state Bethe root densities and quantum phase transitions

Exactly solvable models provide a unique method, via qualitative changes in the distribution of the ground-state roots of the Bethe Ansatz equations, to identify quantum phase transitions. Here we expand on this approach, in a quantitative manner, for two models of Bose--Einstein condensates. The first model deals with the interconversion of bosonic atoms and molecules. The second is the two-site Bose--Hubbard model, widely used to describe tunneling phenomena in Bose--Einstein condensates. For these systems we calculate the ground-state root density. This facilitates the determination of analytic forms for the ground-state energy, and associated correlation functions through the Hellmann--Feynman theorem. These calculations provide a clear identification of the quantum phase transition in each model. For the first model we obtain an expression for the molecular fraction expectation value. For the two-site Bose--Hubbard model we find that there is a simple characterisation of condensate fragmentation.

On the boundaries of quantum integrability for the spin-1/2 Richardson-Gaudin system

We discuss a generalised version of Sklyanin's Boundary Quantum Inverse Scattering Method applied to the spin-1/2, trigonometric sl(2) case, for which both the twisted-periodic and boundary constructions are obtained as limiting cases. We then investigate the quasi-classical limit of this approach leading to a set of mutually commuting conserved operators which we refer to as the trigonometric, spin-1/2 Richardson-Gaudin system. We prove that the rational limit of the set of conserved operators for the trigonometric system is equivalent, through a change of variables, rescaling, and a basis transformation, to the original set of trigonometric conserved operators. Moreover we prove that the twisted-periodic and boundary constructions are equivalent in the trigonometric case, but not in the rational limit.

New quasi-exactly solvable class of generalized isotonic oscillators

We introduce a new family of quasi-exactly solvable generalized isotonic oscillators which are based on the pseudo-Hermite exceptional orthogonal polynomials. We obtain exact closed-form expressions for the energies and wavefunctions as well as the allowed potential parameters for the first two members of the family using the Bethe ansatz method. Numerical calculations of the energies reveal that member potentials have multiple quasi-exactly solvable eigenstates and the number of states for higher members are parameter dependent.

Ground-State Analysis for an Exactly Solvable Coupled-Spin Hamiltonian

We introduce a Hamiltonian for two interacting $su(2)$ spins. We use a mean-field analysis and exact Bethe ansatz results to investigate the ground-state properties of the system in the classical limit, defined as the limit of infinite spin (or highest weight). Complementary insights are provided through investigation of the energy gap, ground-state fidelity, and ground-state entanglement, which are numerically computed for particular parameter values. Despite the simplicity of the model, a rich array of ground-state features are uncovered. Finally, we discuss how this model may be seen as an analogue of the exactly solvable $p+ip$ pairing Hamiltonian.

BCS model with asymmetric pair scattering: a non-Hermitian, exactly solvable Hamiltonian exhibiting generalised exclusion statistics

We demonstrate the occurrence of free quasi-particle excitations obeying generalised exclusion statistics in a BCS model with asymmetric pair scattering. The results are derived from an exact solution of the Hamiltonian, which was obtained via the algebraic Bethe ansatz utilising the representation theory of an underlying Yangian algebra. The free quasi-particle excitations are associated to highest-weight states of the Yangian algebra, corresponding to a class of analytic solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations.

Exactly Solvable BCS-BEC crossover Hamiltonians

We demonstrate a novel approach that allows the determination of very general classes of exactly solvable Hamiltonians via Bethe ansatz methods. This approach combines aspects of both the co-ordinate Bethe ansatz and algebraic Bethe ansatz. The eigenfunctions are formulated as factorisable operators acting on a suitable reference state. Yet, we require no prior knowledge of transfer matrices or conserved operators. By taking a variational form for the Hamiltonian and eigenstates we obtain general exact solvability conditions. The procedure is conducted in the framework of Hamiltonians describing the crossover between the low-temperature phenomena of superconductivity, in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory, and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC).

Deconfined quantum criticality and generalised exclusion statistics in a non-hermitian BCS model

We present a pairing Hamiltonian of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer form which exhibits two quantum critical lines of deconfined excitations. This conclusion is drawn using the exact Bethe ansatz equations of the model which admit a class of simple, analytic solutions. The deconfined excitations obey generalised exclusion statistics. A notable property of the Hamiltonian is that it is non-hermitian. Although it does not have a real spectrum for all choices of coupling parameters, we provide a rigorous argument to establish that real spectra occur on the critical lines. The critical lines are found to be invariant under a renormalisation group map.

Generalised Heine-Stieltjes and Van Vleck polynomials associated with degenerate, integrable BCS models

We study the Bethe Ansatz/Ordinary Differential Equation (BA/ODE) correspondence for Bethe Ansatz equations that belong to a certain class of coupled, nonlinear, algebraic equations. Through this approach we numerically obtain the generalised Heine-Stieltjes and Van Vleck polynomials in the degenerate, two-level limit for four cases of exactly solvable Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing models. These are the s-wave pairing model, the p+ip-wave pairing model, the p+ip pairing model coupled to a bosonic molecular pair degree of freedom, and a newly introduced extended d+id-wave pairing model with additional interactions. The zeros of the generalised Heine-Stieltjes polynomials provide solutions of the corresponding Bethe Ansatz equations. We compare the roots of the ground states with curves obtained from the solution of a singular integral equation approximation, which allows for a characterisation of ground-state phases in these systems. Our techniques also permit for the computation of the roots of the excited states. These results illustrate how the BA/ODE correspondence can be used to provide new numerical methods to study a variety of integrable systems.

Integrability of an extended d+id-wave pairing Hamiltonian

We introduce an integrable Hamiltonian which is an extended d+id-wave pairing model. The integrability is deduced from a duality relation with the Richardson-Gaudin (s-wave) pairing model, and associated to this there exists an exact Bethe ansatz solution. We study this system using the continuum limit approach and solve the corresponding singular integral equation obtained from the Bethe ansatz solution. We also conduct a mean-field analysis and show that results from these two approaches coincide for the ground state in the continuum limit. We identify instances of the integrable system where the excitation spectrum is gapless, and discuss connections to non-integrable models with d+id-wave pairing interactions through the mean-field analysis.

Quasi-Exactly Solvable Models Derived from the Quasi-Gaudin Algebra

The quasi-Gaudin algebra was introduced to construct integrable systems which are only quasi-exactly solvable. Using a suitable representation of the quasi-Gaudin algebra, we obtain a class of bosonic models which exhibit this curious property. These models have the notable feature that they do not preserve U(1) symmetry, which is typically associated to a non-conservation of particle number. An exact solution for the eigenvalues within the quasi-exactly solvable sector is obtained via the algebraic Bethe ansatz formalism.

Exact solutions for a family of spin-boson systems

We obtain the exact solutions for a family of spin-boson systems. This is achieved through application of the representation theory for polynomial deformations of the $su(2)$ Lie algebra. We demonstrate that the family of Hamiltonians includes, as special cases, known physical models which are the two-site Bose-Hubbard model, the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, the molecular asymmetric rigid rotor, the Tavis-Cummings model, and a two-mode generalisation of the Tavis-Cummings model.

BEC-BCS crossover in a p+ip-wave pairing Hamiltonian coupled to bosonic molecular pairs

We analyse a p+ip-wave pairing BCS Hamiltonian, coupled to a single bosonic degree of freedom representing a molecular condensate, and investigate the nature of the BEC-BCS crossover for this system. For a suitable restriction on the coupling parameters, we show that the model is integrable and we derive the exact solution by the algebraic Bethe ansatz. In this manner we also obtain explicit formulae for correlation functions and compute these for several cases. We find that the crossover between the BEC state and the strong pairing p+ip phase is smooth for this model, with no intermediate quantum phase transition.

Quantum phase transitions in an interacting atom-molecule boson model

We study the quantum phase transitions of a model that describes the interconversion of interacting bosonic atoms and molecules. Using a classical analysis, we identify a threshold coupling line separating a molecular phase and a mixed phase. Through studies of the energy gap, von Neumann entanglement entropy, and fidelity, we give evidence that this line is associated to a boundary line in the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum system.

Exact solution of the p+ip pairing Hamiltonian and a hierarchy of integrable models

Using the well-known trigonometric six-vertex solution of the Yang-Baxter equation we derive an integrable pairing Hamiltonian with anyonic degrees of freedom. The exact algebraic Bethe ansatz solution is obtained using standard techniques. From this model we obtain several limiting models, including the pairing Hamiltonian with p+ip-wave symmetry. An in-depth study of the p+ip model is then undertaken, including a mean-field analysis, analytic and numerical solution of the Bethe ansatz equations, and an investigation of the topological properties of the ground-state wavefunction. Our main result is that the ground-state phase diagram of the p+ip model consists of three phases. There is the known boundary line with gapless excitations that occurs for vanishing chemical potential, separating the topologically trivial strong pairing phase and the topologically non-trivial weak pairing phase. We argue that a second boundary line exists separating the weak pairing phase from a topologically trivial weak coupling BCS phase, which includes the Fermi sea in the limit of zero coupling. The ground state on this second boundary line is the Moore-Read state.
