Apparatus for quantum-mixture research in microgravity

Experiments with ultracold quantum gases are a rapidly advancing research field with many applications in fundamental physics and quantum technology. Here, we report on a high-flux generation of Bose-Einstein condensate mixtures of $^{41}$K and $^{87}$Rb, using a fully integrated sounding rocket setup. We compare the release and the free expansion of the quantum mixtures obtained with the apparatus placed on ground or in free fall in an Einstein-Elevator. The release dynamics are governed by the intra- and interspecies interactions as well as the decaying magnetic field during the release. The latter can be minimized by a dedicated switch-off protocol of the trap generating currents where an exact model enabled us to characterize the interaction effects. Our results establish a new benchmark for generating ultracold mixtures on mobile platforms, with direct relevance for future experiments on interacting quantum gases and tests of the equivalence principle in space.

Predicting Crystal Structures and Ionic Conductivities in Li$_{3}$YCl$_{6-x}$Br$_{x}$ Halide Solid Electrolytes Using a Fine-Tuned Machine Learning Interatomic Potential

Understanding ionic transport in halide solid electrolytes is essential for advancing next-generation solid-state batteries. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of fine-tuning the Crystal Hamiltonian Graph Network (CHGNet) universal machine learning interatomic potential to accurately predict total energies, relaxed geometries, and lithium-ion dynamics in the ternary halide family Li$_{3}$YCl$_{6-x}$Br$_{x}$ (LYCB). Starting from experimentally refined disordered structures of Li$_{3}$YCl$_{6}$ and Li$_{3}$YBr$_{6}$, we present a strategy for generating ordered structural models through systematic enumeration and energy ranking, providing realistic structural models. These serve as initial configurations for an iterative fine-tuning workflow that integrates molecular dynamics simulations and static density functional theory calculations to achieve near-ab initio accuracy at four orders of magnitude lower computational cost. We further reveal the influence of composition (varied x) on the predicted phase stability and ionic conductivity in LYCB, demonstrating the robustness of our approach for modeling transport properties in complex solid electrolytes.

Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry: Workshop Summary

This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. The key sections of this report present the physics case and technical challenges, together with a comprehensive overview of the discussions at the workshop together with the main conclusions.

Efficient numerical description of the dynamics of interacting multispecies quantum gases

We present a highly efficient method for the numerical solution of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations describing the evolution dynamics of a multispecies mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates in time-dependent potentials. This method, based on a grid-scaling technique, compares favorably to a more standard but much more computationally expensive solution based on a frozen-resolution grid. It allows an accurate description of the long-time behavior of interacting, multi-species quantum mixtures including the challenging problem of long free expansions relevant for microgravity and space experiments. We demonstrate a successful comparison to experimental measurements of a binary Rb-K mixture recently performed with the payload of a sounding rocket experiment.

A Dual-Species Atom Interferometer Payload for Operation on Sounding Rockets

We report on the design and the construction of a sounding rocket payload capable of performing atom interferometry with Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{41}$K and $^{87}$Rb. The apparatus is designed to be launched in two consecutive missions with a VSB-30 sounding rocket and is qualified to withstand the expected vibrational loads of 1.8 g root-mean-square in a frequency range between 20 - 2000 Hz and the expected static loads during ascent and re-entry of 25 g. We present a modular design of the scientific payload comprising a physics package, a laser system, an electronics system and a battery module. A dedicated on-board software provides a largely automated process of predefined experiments. To operate the payload safely in laboratory and flight mode, a thermal control system and ground support equipment has been implemented and will be presented. The payload presented here represents a cornerstone for future applications of matter wave interferometry with ultracold atoms on satellites.

Red- and blue-detuned magneto-optical trapping with liquid crystal variable retarders

We exploit red- and blue-detuned magneto optical trapping (MOT) of $^{87}$Rb benefitting from a simplified setup based on liquid crystal variable retarders (LCVR). To maintain the trapping forces when switching from a red- to a blue-detuned MOT, the circularity of the cooling beams needs to be reversed. LCVRs allow fast polarization control and represent compact, simple and cost-efficient components which can easily be implemented in existing laser systems. This way, we achieve a blue-detuned type-II MOT for $^{87}$Rb atoms with sub-Doppler temperatures of 44.5 $μ$K. The phase space density is increased by more than two orders of magnitude compared to the standard red-detuned type-I MOT. The setup can readily be transferred to any other system working with $^{87}$Rb.

Two-photon interference from remote deterministic quantum dot microlenses

We report on two-photon interference (TPI) experiments using remote deterministic single-photon sources. Employing 3D in-situ electron-beam lithography, we fabricate quantum-light sources at specific target wavelengths by integrating pre-selected semiconductor quantum dots within monolithic microlenses. The individual single-photon sources show TPI visibilities of 49% and 22%, respectively, under pulsed p-shell excitation at 80 MHz. For the mutual TPI of the remote sources, we observe an uncorrected visibility of 29%, in quantitative agreement with the pure dephasing of the individual sources. Due to its efficient photon extraction within a broad spectral range (> 20 nm), our microlens-based approach is predestinated for future entanglement swapping experiments utilizing entangled photon pairs emitted by distant biexciton-exciton radiative cascades.
