On the average size of $3$-torsion in class groups of $C_2 \wr H$-extensions

The Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet heuristics lead one to conjecture that the average size of the $p$-torsion in class groups of $G$-extensions of a number field is finite. In a 2021 paper, Lemke Oliver, Wang, and Wood proved this conjecture in the case of $p = 3$ for permutation groups $G$ of the form $C_2 \wr H$ for a broad family of permutation groups $H$, including most nilpotent groups. However, their theorem does not apply for some nilpotent groups of interest, such as $H = C_5$. We extend their results to prove that the average size of $3$-torsion in class groups of $C_2 \wr H$-extensions is finite for any nilpotent group $H$.

Explicit formulas for permutation pattern character polynomials

Given permutations $\pi \in S_n$ and $\sigma \in S_k$, let $N_\sigma(\pi)$ denote the number of occurrences of $\sigma$ in $\pi$. While pattern avoidance and the distribution of pattern occurrences in permutations have been extensively studied, their interactions with the group structure on $S_n$ are still poorly understood. Gaetz and Ryba showed that the expected value of $\chi^{\lambda[n]}(\pi)N_\sigma(\pi)$ for $\pi \in S_n$ is given by a polynomial $a_\sigma^\lambda(n)$. More recently, Gaetz and Pierson derived explicit formulas for $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^\lambda(n)$ when $\lvert\lambda\rvert \le 2$, which led them to conjecture that the polynomials $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^\lambda(n)$ are real-rooted and nonnegative for $n \ge k$. We show that for all partitions $\lambda$, the polynomials $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^\lambda(n)$ admit explicit closed forms in $n$ and $k$. These formulas allow us to exhibit counterexamples to Gaetz and Pierson's real-rootedness conjecture as well as to prove special cases of their nonnegativity conjecture. Our results imply that the expected value of $f \cdot N_{\mathrm{id}_k}$ on $S_n$ admits a closed form whenever $f$ is a permutation statistic expressible as a polynomial in the functions $m_j \colon \bigsqcup_{n \ge 0} S_n \to \mathbb{Z}$ which count $j$-cycles in their inputs.

An unconditional explicit bound on the error term in the Sato-Tate conjecture

Let $f(z) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty a_f(n)q^n$ be a holomorphic cuspidal newform with even integral weight $k\geq 2$, level $N$, trivial nebentypus, and no complex multiplication (CM). For all primes $p$, we may define $\theta_p\in [0,\pi]$ such that $a_f(p) = 2p^{(k-1)/2}\cos \theta_p$. The Sato-Tate conjecture states that the angles $\theta_p$ are equidistributed with respect to the probability measure $\mu_{\textrm{ST}}(I) = \frac{2}{\pi}\int_I \sin^2 \theta \; d\theta$, where $I\subseteq [0,\pi]$. Using recent results on the automorphy of symmetric-power $L$-functions due to Newton and Thorne, we explicitly bound the error term in the Sato-Tate conjecture when $f$ corresponds to an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ of arbitrary conductor or when $f$ has squarefree level. In these cases, if $\pi_{f,I}(x) := \#\{ p \leq x : p \nmid N, \theta_p\in I\}$, and $\pi(x) := \# \{ p \leq x \}$, we prove the following bound: $$\left| \frac{\pi_{f,I}(x)}{\pi(x)} - \mu_{\textrm{ST}}(I)\right| \leq 58.1\frac{\log((k-1)N \log{x})}{\sqrt{\log{x}}} \qquad \text{for} \quad x \geq 3.$$ As an application, we give an explicit bound for the number of primes up to $x$ that violate the Atkin-Serre conjecture for $f$.

On Class Numbers, Torsion Subgroups, and Quadratic Twists of Elliptic Curves

The Mordell-Weil groups $E(\mathbb{Q})$ of elliptic curves influence the structures of their quadratic twists $E_{-D}(\mathbb{Q})$ and the ideal class groups $\mathrm{CL}(-D)$ of imaginary quadratic fields. For appropriate $(u,v) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$, we define a family of homomorphisms $\Phi_{u,v}: E(\mathbb{Q}) \rightarrow \mathrm{CL}(-D)$ for particular negative fundamental discriminants $-D:=-D_E(u,v)$, which we use to simultaneously address questions related to lower bounds for class numbers, the structures of class groups, and ranks of quadratic twists. Specifically, given an elliptic curve $E$ of rank $r$, let $\Psi_E$ be the set of suitable fundamental discriminants $-D<0$ satisfying the following three conditions: the quadratic twist $E_{-D}$ has rank at least 1; $E_{\text{tor}}(\mathbb{Q})$ is a subgroup of $\mathrm{CL}(-D)$; and $h(-D)$ satisfies an effective lower bound which grows asymptotically like $c(E) \log (D)^{\frac{r}{2}}$ as $D \to \infty$. Then for any $\varepsilon > 0$, we show that as $X \to \infty$, we have $$\#\, \left\{-X < -D < 0: -D \in \Psi_E \right \} \, \gg_{\varepsilon} X^{\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon}.$$ In particular, if $\ell \in \{3,5,7\}$ and $\ell \mid |E_{\mathrm{tor}}(\mathbb{Q})|$, then the number of such discriminants $-D$ for which $\ell \mid h(-D)$ is $\gg_{\varepsilon} X^{\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon}.$ Moreover, assuming the Parity Conjecture, our results hold with the additional condition that the quadratic twist $E_{-D}$ has rank at least 2.

Hyperbolicity of Appell Polynomials of Functions in the $\delta$-Laguerre-P\'olya Class

We present a method for proving that Jensen polynomials associated with functions in the $\delta$-Laguerre-P\'olya class have all real roots, and demonstrate how it can be used to construct new functions belonging to the Laguerre-P\'olya class. As an application, we confirm a conjecture of Ono, which asserts that the Jensen polynomials associated with the first term of the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher series formula for the partition function are always hyperbolic.

Exact Formulae for the Fractional Partition Functions

The partition function $p(n)$ has been a testing ground for applications of analytic number theory to combinatorics. In particular, Hardy and Ramanujan invented the "circle method" to estimate the size of $p(n)$, which was later perfected by Rademacher who obtained an exact formula. Recently, Chan and Wang considered the fractional partition functions, defined by $\sum_{n = 0}^\infty p_{\alpha}(n)x^n := \prod_{k=1}^\infty (1-x^k)^{-\alpha}$. In this paper we use the Rademacher circle method to find an exact formula for $p_\alpha(n)$ and study its implications, including log-concavity and the higher-order generalizations (i.e., the Tur\'an inequalities) that $p_\alpha(n)$ satisfies.
