Dilute gas of ultracold two-level atoms inside a cavity; generalized Dicke model

We consider a gas of ultracold two-level atoms confined in a cavity, taking into account for atomic center-of-mass motion and cavity mode variations. We use the generalized Dicke model, and analyze separately the cases of a Gaussian, and a standing wave mode shape. Owing to the interplay between external motional energies of the atoms and internal atomic and field energies, the phase-diagrams exhibit novel features not encountered in the standard Dicke model, such as the existence of first and second order phase transitions between normal and superradiant phases. Due to the quantum description of atomic motion, internal and external atomic degrees of freedom are highly correlated leading to modified normal and superradiant phases.

Jahn-Teller induced Berry phase in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We demonstrate that Berry phases may greatly affect the dynamics of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. The effective model Hamiltonian under consideration is shown to be equivalent to the Exe Jahn-Teller model first introduced in molecular physics. The corresponding conical intersection is identified and the Berry phase acquired for a wave packet encircling the intersection studied. It is found that this phase manifests itself in the density profile of the condensate, making it a directly measurable quantity via time-of-flight detection. Moreover, the non-Abelian gauge structure of the system is addressed and we verify how it affects the dynamics.

Quantum fluctuations in the mazer

Quantum fluctuations in the mazer are considered, arising either from the atomic motion or from the quantized intracavity field. Analytical results, for both the meza and the hyperbolic secant mode profile, predict for example an attenuation of tunneling resonances due to such fluctuations. The case of a Gaussian mode profile is studied numerically using a wave packet propagation approach. The method automatically takes into account fluctuations in the atomic motion and the dynamics is especially considered at or adjacent to a tunnel resonance. We find that the system evolution is greatly sensitive to the atom-field detuning, bringing about a discussion about the concept of adiabaticity in this model. Further, a novel collapse-revival phenomena is demonstrated, originating from the quantum fluctuations in the atomic motion rather from field fluctuations as is normally the case.

Coupled two-component atomic gas in an optical lattice

We present an ab initio study of the ground state of an ideal coupled two-component gas of ultracold atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice, either bosons or fermions. Due to the internal two-level structure of the atoms, the Brillouin zone is twice as large as imposed by the periodicity of the lattice potential. This is reflected in the Bloch dispersion curves, where the energy bands regularly possess several local minima. As a consequence, when the system parameters are tuned across a resonance condition, a non-zero temperature phase transition occurs which arises from an interplay between internal and kinetic atomic energies. For fermions, this phase transition is of topological character since the structure of the Fermi surface is changed across the critical value. It is shown that these phenomena are also expected to occur for two and three dimensional optical lattices.

Jahn-Teller systems from a cavity QED perspective

Jahn-Teller systems and the Jahn-Teller effect are discussed in terms of cavity QED models. By expressing the field modes in a quadrature representation, it is shown that certain setups of a two-level system interacting with a bimodal cavity is described by the Jahn-Teller $E\timesε$ Hamiltonian. We identify the corresponding adiabatic potential surfaces and the conical intersection. The effects of a non-zero geometrical Berry phase, governed by encircling the conical intersection, are studied in detail both theoretically and numerically. The numerical analysis is carried out by applying a wave packet propagation method, more commonly used in molecular or chemical physics, and analytic expressions for the characteristic time scales are presented. It is found that the collapse-revival structure is greatly influenced by the geometrical phase and as a consequence, the field intensities contain direct information about this phase. We also mention the link between the Jahn-Teller effect and the Dicke phase transition in cavity QED.

Cold Fermi atomic gases in a pumped optical resonator

We study systems of fully polarized ultracold atomic gases obeying Fermi statistics. The atomic transition interacts dispersively with a mode of a standing-wave cavity, which is coherently pumped by a laser. In this setup, the intensity of the intracavity field is determined by the refractive index of the atomic medium, and thus by the atomic density distribution. Vice versa, the density distribution of the atom is determined by the cavity field potential, whose depth is proportional to the intracavity field amplitude. In this work we show that this nonlinearity leads to an instability in the intracavity intensity that differs substantially from dispersive optical bistability, as this effect is already present in the regime, where the atomic dipole is proportional to the cavity field. Such instability is driven by the matter waves fluctuations and exhibits a peculiar dependence on the fluctuations in the atomic density distribution.

Rabi oscillations in a quantum dot-cavity system coupled to a non-zero temperature phonon bath

We study a quantum dot strongly coupled to a single high-finesse optical microcavity mode. We use a rotating wave approximation method, commonly used in ion-laser interactions, tegether with the Lamb-Dicke approximation to obtain an analytic solution of this problem. The decay of Rabi oscillations because of the electron-phonon coupling are studied at arbitrary temperature and analytical expressions for the collapse and revival times are presented. Analyses without the rotating wave approximation are presented by means of investigating the energy spectrum.

Quantum interference structures in trapped ion dynamics beyond the Lamb-Dicke and rotating wave approximations

We apply wave packet methods to study an ion-trap system in the strong excitation regime imposing neither the rotating wave nor the Lamb-Dicke approximations. By this approach we show the existence of states with restricted phase space evolution, as a genuine consequence of quantum interference between wave packet fractions. A particular instance of such a state oscillates between maximal entanglement and pure disentanglement between the constitute subsystems. The characteristic crossover time is very rapid making them suitable for state preparations of EPR or Schrodinger cat states. Over longer time periods the dynamics of these states exhibits collapse-revival patterns with well resolved fractional revivals in autocorrelation, inversion and entanglement.

Quantum stability of self-organized atomic insulator-like states in optical resonators

We investigate a paradigm example of cavity quantum electrodynamics with many body systems: an ultracold atomic gas inside a pumped optical resonator. In particular, we study the stability of atomic insulator-like states, confined by the mechanical potential emerging from the cavity field spatial mode structure. As in open space, when the optical potential is sufficiently deep, the atomic gas is in the Mott-like state. Inside the cavity, however, the potential depends on the atomic distribution, which determines the refractive index of the medium, thus altering the intracavity field amplitude. We derive the effective Bose-Hubbard model describing the physics of the system in one dimension and study the crossover between the superfluid -- Mott insulator quantum states. We determine the regions of parameters where the atomic insulator states are stable, and predict the existence of overlapping stability regions corresponding to competing insulator-like states. Bistable behavior, controlled by the pump intensity, is encountered in the vicinity of the shifted cavity resonance.

Mott insulator states of ultracold atoms in optical resonators

We study the low temperature physics of an ultracold atomic gas in the potential formed inside a pumped optical resonator. Here, the height of the cavity potential, and hence the quantum state of the gas, depends not only on the pump parameters, but also on the atomic density through a dynamical a.c.-Stark shift of the cavity resonance. We derive the Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension, and use the strong coupling expansion to determine the parameter regime in which the system is in the Mott-insulator state. We predict the existence of overlapping, competing Mott states, and bistable behavior in the vicinity of the shifted cavity resonance, controlled by the pump parameters. Outside these parameter regions, the state of the system is in most cases superfluid.

Wave packet methods in cavity QED

The Jaynes-Cummings model, with and without the rotating wave approximation, is expressed in the conjugate variable representation and solved numerically by wave packet propagation. Both cases are then cast into systems of two coupled harmonic oscillators, reminiscent of coupled bound electronic potential curves of diatomic molecules. Using the knowledge of such models, this approach of the problem gives new insight of the dynamics. The effect of the rotating wave approximation is discussed. The collapse-revival phenomenon is especially analyzed in a non-standard manner. Extensions of the method is briefly mentioned in terms of a three-level atom and the Dicke model.

Dynamics of the Jayne-Cummings and Rabi models: old wine in new bottles

By using a wave packet approach, this paper reviews the Jaynes-Cummings model with and without the rotating wave approximation in a non-standard way. This gives new insight, not only of the two models themselves, but of the rotating wave approximation as well. Expressing the models by field quadrature operators, instead of the typically used boson ladder operators, wave packet simulations are presented. Several known phenomena of these systems, such as collapse-revivals, Rabi oscillation, squeezing and entanglement, are reviewed and explained in this new picture, either in an adiabatic or diabatic frame. The harmonic shape of the potential curves that the wave packets evolve on and the existence of a level crossing make these results interesting in a broader sense than only for models in quantum optics, especially in atomic and molecular physics.

Self-rotating wave approximation via symmetric ordering of ladder operators

We show how some Hamiltonians may be approximated using rotating wave approximation methods. In order to achieve this we use the algebra of boson ladder operators, and transformation formulas between normal and symmetric ordering of the operators. The method presented is studied in two special cases; the Morse and the Mathiue models. The connection with regular perturbation theory is given and the validity of the approximation is discussed.

Scheme for generating entangled states of two field modes in a cavity

This paper considers a two-level atom interacting with two cavity modes with equal frequencies. Applying a unitary transformation, the system reduces to the analytically solvable Jaynes-Cummings model. For some particular field states, coherent and squeezed states, the transformation between the two bare basis's, related by the unitary transformation, becomes particularly simple. It is shown how to generate, the highly non-classical, entangled coherent states of the two modes, both in the zero and large detuning cases. An advantage with the zero detuning case is that the preparation is deterministic and no atomic measurement is needed. For the large detuning situation a measurement is required, leaving the field in either of two orthogonal entangled coherent states.

Effective mass in cavity QED

We consider propagation of a two-level atom coupled to one electro-magnetic mode of a high-Q cavity. The atomic center-of-mass motion is treated quantum mechanically and we use a standing wave shape for the mode. The periodicity of the Hamiltonian leads to a spectrum consisting of bands and gaps, which is studied from a Floquet point of view. Based on the band theory we introduce a set of effective mass parameters that approximately describe the effect of the cavity on the atomic motion, with the emphasis on one associated with the group velocity and on another one that coincides with the conventional effective mass. Propagation of initially Gaussian wave packets is also studied using numerical simulations and the mass parameters extracted thereof are compared with those predicted by the Floquet theory. Scattering and transmission of the wave packet against the cavity are further analyzed, and the constraints for the effective mass approach to be valid are discussed in detail.

Cavity state preparation using adiabatic transfer

We show how to prepare a variety of cavity field states for multiple cavities. The state preparation technique used is related to the method of stimulated adiabatic Raman passage or STIRAP. The cavity modes are coupled by atoms, making it possible to transfer an arbitrary cavity field state from one cavity to another, and also to prepare non-trivial cavity field states. In particular, we show how to prepare entangled states of two or more cavities, such as an EPR state and a W state, as well as various entangled superpositions of coherent states in different cavities, including Schrodinger cat states. The theoretical considerations are supported by numerical simulations.
