A stochastic Schauder-Tychonoff type theorem and its applications

One standard way to prove existence for deterministic, highly nonlinear PDEs is to use the Schauder-Tychonoff fixed-point theorem. In what follows, we introduce and verify a stochastic variant of the Schauder-Tychonoff theorem. We apply our existence result to nonlinear stochastic diffusion equations with non-Lipschitz perturbations

Lower path regularity in all dimensions

We prove precise almost sure lower path regularity results for a wide class of stochastic processes in all space dimensions $d\geq 1$. Examples include Gaussian processes, in particular, fractional Brownian motions with Hurst index $H\in (0,1)$, Rosenblatt processes, and solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motions with Hurst index $H\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$, all in arbitrary dimensions $d\ge 1$. Our key tool is a new continuity result for Riesz potentials of occupation measures, which we use as substitutes for local times.

Ergodicity and mixing for locally monotone stochastic evolution equations

We establish general quantitative conditions for stochastic evolution equations with locally monotone drift and degenerate additive Wiener noise in variational formulation resulting in the existence of a unique invariant probability measure for the associated exponentially ergodic Markovian Feller semigroup. We prove improved moment estimates for the solutions and the $e$-property of the semigroup. Furthermore, we provide quantitative upper bounds for the $2$-Wasserstein $\varepsilon$-mixing times. Examples on possibly unbounded domains include the stochastic incompressible 2D Navier-Stokes equations, shear thickening stochastic power-law fluid equations, the stochastic heat equation, as well as, stochastic semilinear equations such as the 1D stochastic Burgers equation.

Mixing times for the stochastic $p$-Laplace equation

We give an overview on existing quantitative results on long-time behavior of the stochastic $p$-Laplace equation with additive Wiener noise, $p>1$. We summarize the existing results in a table. We give explicit quantitative upper and lower estimates for the $\varepsilon$-mixing times of the stochastic $p$-Laplace equations for $p>1$. We summarize the mixing time asymptotics in a table.

On fractal minimizers and potentials of occupation measures

We consider four prototypes of variational problems and prove the existence of fractal minimizers through the direct method in the calculus of variations. By design these minimizers are Hölder curves or Hölder parametrizations of hypersurfaces whose images generally have a non-integer Hausdorff dimension. Although their origin is deterministic, their regularity properties are roughly similar to those of typical realizations of stochastic processes. As a key tool, we prove novel continuity and boundedness results for potentials of occupation measures of Gaussian random fields. These results complement well-known results for local times, but hold under much less restrictive assumptions. In an auxiliary section, we generalize earlier results on non-linear compositions of fractional Sobolev functions with $BV$-functions to higher dimensions.

Stochastic evolution equations with nonlinear diffusivity, recent progress and critical cases

This short survey article stems from recent progress on critical cases of stochastic evolution equations in variational formulation with additive, multiplicative or gradient noises. Typical examples appear as the limit cases of the stochastic porous medium equation, stochastic fast- and super fast-diffusion equations, self-organized criticality, stochastic singular $p$-Laplace equations, and the stochastic total variation flow, among others. We present several different notions of solutions, results on convergence of solutions depending on a parameter, and homogenization. Furthermore, we provide some references hinting at the recent progress in regularity results, long-time behavior, ergodicity, and numerical analysis.

1D stochastic pressure equation with log-correlated Gaussian coefficients

We study unique solvability for one dimensional stochastic pressure equation with diffusion coefficient given by the Wick exponential of log-correlated Gaussian fields. We prove well-posedness for Dirichlet, Neumann and periodic boundary data, and the initial value problem, covering the cases of both the Wick renormalization of the diffusion and of point-wise multiplication. We provide explicit representations for the solutions in both cases, characterized by the $S$-transform and the Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure.

Ergodicity for stochastic neural field equations

We investigate the well-posedness and long-time behavior of a general continuum neural field model with Gaussian noise on possibly unbounded domains. In particular, we give conditions for the existence of invariant probability measures by restricting the solution flow to an invariant subspace with a nonlocal metric. Under the assumption of a sufficiently large decay parameter relative to the noise intensity, the growth of the connectivity kernel, and the Lipschitz regularity of the activation function, we establish exponential ergodicity and exponential mixing of the associated Markovian Feller semigroup and the uniqueness of the invariant measure with second moments.

Renormalized stochastic pressure equation with log-correlated Gaussian coefficients

We study periodic solutions to the following divergence-form stochastic partial differential equation with Wick-renormalized gradient on the $d$-dimensional flat torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, \[ -\nabla\cdot\left(e^{\diamond (- βX) }\diamond\nabla U\right)=\nabla \cdot (e^{\diamond (- βX)} \diamond \mathbf{F}), \] where $X$ is the log-correlated Gaussian field, $\mathbf{F}$ is a random vector field representing the flux, the in/out-flow of fluid per unit area per unit time, and $\diamond$ denotes the Wick product. The problem is a variant of the stochastic pressure equation, in which $U$ is modeling the pressure of a creeping water-flow in crustal rock that occurs in enhanced geothermal heating. In the original model, the Wick exponential term $e^{\diamond(-βX)}$ is modeling the random permeability of the rock. The porosity field is given by a log-correlated Gaussian random field $βX$, where $β<\sqrt{d}$. We use elliptic regularity theory in order to define a notion of a solution to this (a priori very ill-posed) problem, via modifying the $S$-transform from Gaussian white noise analysis, and then establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions. Moreover, we show that the solution to the problem can be expressed in terms of the Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure.

Variability and the existence of rough integrals with irregular coefficients

Within the context of rough path analysis via fractional calculus, we show how variability can be used to prove the existence of integrals with respect to Hölder continuous multiplicative functionals in the case of Lipschitz coefficients with first order partial derivatives of bounded variation. We discuss applications to certain Gaussian processes, in particular, fractional Brownian motions with Hurst index $\frac13<H\leq \frac12$.

The stochastic Klausmeier system and a stochastic Schauder-Tychonoff type theorem

On the one hand, we investigate the existence and pathwise uniqueness of a nonnegative martingale solution to the stochastic evolution system of nonlinear advection-diffusion equations proposed by Klausmeier with Gaussian multiplicative noise. On the other hand, we present and verify a general stochastic version of the Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point theorem, as its application is an essential step for showing existence of the solution to the stochastic Klausmeier system. The analysis of the system is based both on variational and semigroup techniques. We also discuss additional regularity properties of the solution.

Improved regularity for the stochastic fast diffusion equation

We prove that the solution to the singular-degenerate stochastic fast-diffusion equation with parameter $m\in (0,1)$, with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain in any spatial dimension, and driven by linear multiplicative Wiener noise, exhibits improved regularity in the Sobolev space $W^{1,m+1}_0$ for initial data in $L^{2}$.

Stability and moment estimates for the stochastic singular $Φ$-Laplace equation

We study stability, long-time behavior and moment estimates for stochastic evolution equations with additive Wiener noise and with singular drift given by a divergence type quasilinear diffusion operator which may not necessarily exhibit a homogeneous diffusivity. Our results cover the singular stochastic $p$-Laplace equations and, more generally, singular stochastic $Φ$-Laplace equations with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions. We obtain improved moment estimates and quantitative convergence rates of the ergodic semigroup to the unique invariant measure, classified in a systematic way according to the degree of local degeneracy of the potential at the origin. We obtain new concentration results for the invariant measure and establish maximal dissipativity of the associated Kolmogorov operator. In particular, we recover the results for the curve shortening flow in the plane by Es-Sarhir, von Renesse and Stannat, NoDEA 16(9), 2012, and improve the results by Liu and Tölle, ECP 16, 2011.

Singular limits for stochastic equations

We study singular limits of stochastic evolution equations in the interplay of disappearing strength of the noise and insufficient regularity, where the equation in the limit with noise would not be defined due to lack of regularity. We recover previously known results on vanishing small noise with increasing roughness, but our main focus is to study for fixed noise the singular limit where the leading order differential operator in the equation may vanish. Although the noise is disappearing in the limit, additional deterministic terms appear due to renormalization effects. We separate the analysis of the equation from the convergence of stochastic terms and give a general framework for the main error estimates. This first reduces the result to bounds on a residual and in a second step to various bounds on the stochastic convolution. Moreover, as examples we apply our result to the a singularly regularized Allen-Cahn equation with a vanishing Bilaplacian, and the Cahn-Hilliard/Allen-Cahn homotopy with space-time white noise in two spatial dimensions.

Variability of paths and differential equations with $BV$-coefficients

We define compositions $φ(X)$ of Hölder paths $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and functions of bounded variation $φ$ under a relative condition involving the path and the gradient measure of $φ$. We show the existence and properties of generalized Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals of compositions $φ(X)$ with respect to a given Hölder path $Y$. These results are then used, together with Doss' transform, to obtain existence and, in a certain sense, uniqueness results for differential equations in $\mathbb{R}^n$ driven by Hölder paths and involving coefficients of bounded variation. Examples include equations with discontinuous coefficients driven by paths of two-dimensional fractional Brownian motions.

Sobolev regularity of occupation measures and paths, variability and compositions

We prove a result on the fractional Sobolev regularity of composition of paths of low fractional Sobolev regularity with functions of bounded variation. The result relies on the notion of variability, proposed by us in the previous article [43, arXiv:2003.11698]. Here we work under relaxed hypotheses, formulated in terms of Sobolev norms, and we can allow discontinuous paths, which is new. The result applies to typical realizations of certain Gaussian or Lévy processes, and we use it to show the existence of Stieltjes type integrals involving compositions.

A compact topology for $σ$-algebra convergence

We propose a sequential topology on the space of sub-$σ$-algebras of a separable probability space $(Ω,\mathcal{F},\mathbb{P})$ by linking conditional expectations on $L^{2}$ along sequences of sub-$σ$-algebras. The varying index of measurability is captured by a bundle space construction. As a consequence, we establish the compactness of the space of sub-$σ$-algebras. The proposed topology preserves independence and is compatible with join and meet operations.

Stochastic evolution equations with singular drift and gradient noise via curvature and commutation conditions

We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a nonlinear stochastic evolution equation on the $d$-dimensional torus with singular $p$-Laplace-type or total variation flow-type drift with general sublinear doubling nonlinearities and Gaussian gradient Stratonovich noise with divergence-free coefficients. Assuming a weak defective commutator bound and a curvature-dimension condition, the well-posedness result is obtained in a stochastic variational inequality setup by using resolvent and Dirichlet form methods and an approximative Itô-formula.
