Riemann-Roch theorems in monoidal 2-categories

Smooth and proper dg-algebras have an Euler class valued in the Hochschild homology of the algebra. This Euler class is worthy of this name since it satisfies many familiar properties including compatibility with the familiar pairing on the Hochschild homology of the algebra and that of its opposite. This compatibility is the Riemann-Roch theorems of Shklyarov and Petit. In this paper we prove a broad generalization of these Riemann-Roch theorems. We generalize from the bicategory of dg-algebras and their bimodules to monoidal bicategories and from Euler class to traces of non identity maps. Our generalization also implies spectral Riemann-Roch theorems. We regard this result as an instantiation of a 2-dimensional generalized cobordism hypothesis. This perspective draws the result close to many others that generalize results about Euler characteristics and classes to bicategorical traces.

Devissage and Localization for the Grothendieck Spectrum of Varieties

We introduce a new perspective on the $K$-theory of exact categories via the notion of a CGW-category. CGW-categories are a generalization of exact categories that admit a Qullen $Q$-construction, but which also include examples such as finite sets and varieties. By analyzing Quillen's proofs of dévissage and localization we define ACGW-categories, an analogous generalization of abelian categories for which we prove theorems analogous to dévissage and localization. In particular, although the category of varieties is not quite ACGW, the category of reduced schemes of finite type is; applying dévissage and localization allows us to calculate a filtration on the $K$-theory of schemes of finite type. As an application of this theory we construct a comparison map showing that the two authors' definitions of the Grothendieck spectrum of varieties are equivalent.

$K$-theory of endomorphisms, the $\mathit{TR}$-trace, and zeta functions

We show that the characteristic polynomial and the Lefschetz zeta function are manifestations of the trace map from the $K$-theory of endomorphisms to topological restriction homology (TR). Along the way we generalize Lindenstrauss and McCarthy's map from $K$-theory of endomorphisms to topological restriction homology, defining it for any Waldhausen category with a compatible enrichment in orthogonal spectra. In particular, this extends their construction from rings to ring spectra. We also give a revisionist treatment of the original Dennis trace map from $K$-theory to topological Hochschild homology (THH) and explain its connection to traces in bicategories with shadow (also known as trace theories).

Spectral Waldhausen categories, the $S_\bullet$-construction, and the Dennis trace

We give an explicit point-set construction of the Dennis trace map from the $K$-theory of endomorphisms $K\mathrm{End}(\mathcal{C})$ to topological Hochschild homology $\mathrm{THH}(\mathcal{C})$ for any spectral Waldhausen category $\mathcal{C}$. We describe the necessary technical foundations, most notably a well-behaved model for the spectral category of diagrams in $\mathcal{C}$ indexed by an ordinary category via the Moore end. This is applied to define a version of Waldhausen's $S_{\bullet}$-construction for spectral Waldhausen categories, which is central to this account of the Dennis trace map. Our goals are both convenience and transparency---we provide all details except for a proof of the additivity theorem for $\mathrm{THH}$, which is taken for granted---and the exposition is concerned not with originality of ideas, but rather aims to provide a useful resource for learning about the Dennis trace and its underlying machinery.

Iterated traces in 2-categories and Lefschetz theorems

While not obvious from its initial motivation in linear algebra, there are many context where iterated traces can be defined. In this paper we prove a very general theorem about iterated 2-categorical traces. We show that many Lefschetz-type theorems in the literature are consequences of this result and the new perspective we provide allows for immediate spectral generalizations.

Facets of the Witt Vectors

We give a $K$-theoretic account of the basic properties of Witt vectors. Along the way we re-prove basic properties of the little-known Witt vector norm, give a characterization of Witt vectors in terms of algebraic $K$-theory, and a presentation of the Witt vectors that is useful for computation.

Topological Hochschild Homology and Higher Characteristics

We show that an important classical fixed point invariant, the Reidemeister trace, arises as a topological Hochschild homology transfer. This generalizes a corresponding classical result for the Euler characteristic and is a first step in showing the Reidemeister trace is in the image of the cyclotomic trace. The main result follows from developing the relationship between shadows, topological Hochschild homology, and Morita invariance in bicategorical generality.

A Guide for Computing Stable Homotopy Groups

This paper contains an overview of background from stable homotopy theory used by Freed--Hopkins in their work on invertible extended topological field theories. We provide a working guide to the stable homotopy category, to the Steenrod algebra and to computations using the Adams spectral sequence. Many examples are worked out in detail to illustrate the techniques.

The K-Theory Spectrum of Varieties

Using a construction closely related to Waldhausen's $S_\bullet$-construction, we produce a spectrum $K(\mathbf{Var}_{/k})$ whose components model the Grothendieck ring of varieties (over a field $k$) $K_0 (\mathbf{Var}_{/k})$. We then produce liftings of various motivic measures to spectrum-level maps, including maps into Waldhausen's $K$-theory of spaces $A(\ast)$ and to $K(\mathbf{Q})$. We end with a conjecture relating $K(\mathbf{Var}_{/k})$ and the doubly-iterated $K$-theory of the sphere spectrum.

(Co)homology of Spectral Categories

In this article we develop the cotangent complex and (co)homology theories for spectral categories. Along the way, we reproduce standard model structures on spectral categories. As applications, we show that the invariants to descend to stable $\infty$-categories and we prove a stabilization result for spectral categories.

Derived Koszul Duality and Topological Hochschild Homology

Motivated by a result from string topology, we prove a duality in topological Hochschild homology (THH). The duality relates the THH of an E_1-algebra spectrum and the THH of its derived Koszul dual algebra under certain compactness conditions. The result relies on results about module categories which may be of interest on their own. Finally, we relate this result to topological field theories and outline some future work.
