One-point reductions of finite spaces, h-regular CW-complexes and collapsibility

We investigate one-point reduction methods of finite topological spaces. These methods allow one to study homotopy theory of cell complexes by means of elementary moves of their finite models. We also introduce the notion of h-regular CW-complex, generalizing the concept of regular CW-complex, and prove that the h-regular CW-complexes, which are a sort of combinatorial-up-to-homotopy objects, are modeled (up to homotopy) by their associated finite spaces. This is accomplished by generalizing a classical result of McCord on simplicial complexes.

2-Dimension from the topological viewpoint

In this paper we study the 2-dimension of a finite poset from the topological point of view. We use homotopy theory of finite topological spaces and the concept of a beat point to improve the classical results on 2-dimension, giving a more complete answer to the problem of all possible 2-dimensions of an n-point poset.

Simple Homotopy Types and Finite Spaces

We present a new approach to simple homotopy theory of polyhedra using finite topological spaces. We define the concept of collapse of a finite space and prove that this new notion corresponds exactly to the concept of a simplicial collapse. More precisely, we show that a collapse of finite spaces induces a simplicial collapse of their associated simplicial complexes. Moreover, a simplicial collapse induces a collapse of the associated finite spaces. This establishes a one-to-one correspondence between simple homotopy types of finite simplicial complexes and simple equivalence classes of finite spaces. We also prove a similar result for maps: We give a complete characterization of the class of maps between finite spaces which induce simple homotopy equivalences between the associated polyhedra. Furthermore, this class describes all maps coming from simple homotopy equivalences at the level of complexes. The advantage of this theory is that the elementary move of finite spaces is much simpler than the elementary move of simplicial complexes: It consists of removing (or adding) just a single point of the space.

Minimal Finite Models

We characterize the smallest finite spaces with the same homotopy groups of the spheres. Similarly, we describe the minimal finite models of any finite graph. We also develop new combinatorial techniques based on finite spaces to study classical invariants of general topological spaces.
