High-Speed Non-Volatile Barium Titanate Field Programmable Photonic Gate Array

Programmable integrated photonics aims to replicate the versatility of field-programmable gate arrays in the optical domain. However, scaling these systems has been prevented by the high power consumption and thermal crosstalk of conventional volatile phase shifters. Here, we demonstrate the first non-volatile field-programmable photonic gate array, implemented on a hybrid silicon-barium titanate platform. Unlike traditional thermo-optic devices that require constant power to maintain a state, our device utilizes ferroelectric domain switching to provide non-volatile memory, allowing optical circuits to be programmed and retained without any holding power or electrical bias. The hexagonal waveguide mesh integrates 58 programmable unit cells and 116 actuators, achieving nanosecond-scale switching speeds of 80 nanoseconds while reducing static power consumption to negligible levels (560 nanowatts per π phase shift). To validate this platform, we configured the mesh to perform diverse signal processing functions, including tunable filtering, 4x4 linear unitary transformations, and optical routing. This work establishes non-volatile ferroelectric silicon photonics as a scalable, heat-free platform essential for the next generation of energy-efficient photonic computing.

Multipartite quantum correlated bright frequency combs

This experimental work demonstrates multipartite quantum correlation in bright frequency combs out of a microresonator integrated on silicon nitride operating above its oscillation threshold. Multipartite features, going beyond so far reported two-mode correlation, naturally arise due to a cascade of non-linear optical processes, making a single-color laser pump sufficient to initiate their generation. Our results show the transition from two-mode to multipartite correlation, witnessed by noise reductions as low as $-2.5$\,dB and $-2$\,dB, respectively, compared to corresponding classical levels. A constant of the movement of the non-linear interaction Hamiltonian is identified and used to asses the multipartite behavior. Reported demonstrations pave the way to next generation on-chip multipartite sources for quantum technologies applications.

Development, calibration and characterization of silicon photonics based optical phased arrays

Over the last decade, Optical Phased Arrays (OPA) have been extensively studied, targeting applications such as Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) systems, holographic displays, atmospheric monitoring and free space communications. Leveraging the maturity of the silicon photonics platform, the usual mechanical based beam steering system could be replaced by an integrated OPA, significantly reducing the cost and size of the LiDAR while improving its performance (scanning speed, power efficiency, resolution) thanks to solid state beam steering. However, the realization of an OPA that meets the specifications of a LiDAR system (low divergence and single output beam) is not trivial. Targeting the realization of a complete LiDAR system, the technical challenges inherent to the development of high performance OPAs have been studied at CEA LETI. In particular, efficient genetic algorithms have been developed for the calibration of high channel count OPAs as well as an advanced measurement setup compatible with wafer-scale OPA characterization.
